As the residents of Sunnydale flee, Buffy searches for a way to battle Caleb, but everyone has lost confidence in her leadership.

- Character Development: Faith doesn't hit back at Buffy because "other things matter more".

- Faith saying that she shuts up Anya re Xander by remind her she had him first. Faith took Xander's virginity in "The Zeppo".

- Dramatic Irony: Giles arguing with Buffy that the girls need time off at the Bronze.
- Even Faith Has Standards: Faith has murdered, raped, worked for the Big Bad, started riots, tortured and broken out of prison, but she won't let the underage Slayers drink alcohol.
- Foreshadowing: Willow winces as she hears the police beating the crazy guy. After Giles and Willow walk off, two other cops arrive with information on a fugitive.
- What's hidden in the mission that wasn't for Caleb.
- Funny Background Event: Andrew drawing on the board while Anya gives her briefing to the Potentials.
- The Glomp: Dawn to Xander when he returns home.
- Good Cop, Bad Cop: Spike as good cop and Andrew as a less than convincing bad cop.

- Homoerotic Subtext: Andrew with his arms around Spike on a motorcycle, discussing the delights of the flowering onion.
- Humiliation Conga: Buffy has to deal with the disastrous raid on the vineyard, then she gets beaten unconscious by Caleb, then deposed as leader of the Scooby Gang.
- Idiot Ball: Buffy running out of ideas to kill Caleb or ubervamps. Over the years the Scooby Gang has pulled hat tricks against impossible-to-kill enemies including a rocket launcher (which Buffy is shown to still have in "Him"), luring the target into a place primed with explosives (the Mayor in "Graduation Day"), an Enjoining Spell combining the essence of the Scooby Gang (Adam in "Primeval"), a whole Chekhov's Armoury against Glory, or just plain old Kill It with Fire (they couldn't just burn down Caleb's lair?)
- I'll Kill You!: Buffy tells Caleb, "I will end you." He's not impressed.
- Jedi Mind Trick: Unfortunately the cop gets stuck in a loop.
- Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Spike and Andrew discussing onion blossoms.
- Neck Lift / Destination Defenestration
- Police Brutality: Justified as The First is influencing them; it sends them to kill Faith.

- Unusually Uninteresting Sight: No-one takes notice of Clem driving his little red car in broad daylight.
