"current title may be a bit of a misnomer. They don't have to hate that what they are skilled at exists to qualify (although they can), they just have to hate doing it" So this title should be replaced or improved.
Talk:Averse Adept
One possibility that crossed my mind was inserting the word doing between hating and what, so: Hating Doing What You Are Good At
But that seems long and/or clunky.
I think that the current title, despite the possible misnomer, is perfectly good because it can be interpreted as "Hating to have the skills", "Hating to have the talent" and "Hating to having to do this thing for a living/for surviving", which can overlap but not necessarily so. Simple is better in titling, and we can always explain the trope in the description
I could think of something snappier but it'd probably be more esoteric in comparison... "Career Anchor"? Something to suggest that the issue is being "chained" to said occupation?
"Prodigy Hater" although that really means "hates talented people"
I was thinking of having "prodigy" somewhere in the name.
...actually, how about "Reluctant Prodigy"? Not as alliterative as I initially wanted but it has a certain ring to it.
"Reluctant Prodigy" sounds good! Changing my vote to this
Shall we call it to a formal vote then, @Goo Monster?
"Prodigy" kinda has its own implications (youth being a big one). "Master" wouldn't work because it implies teaching. Maybe use "Talent"?
Great catch - "Reluctant Talent" it is for me.
If you're still looking for alliteration, you could always go with Adverse Adept?
Ooh, that could also work.
Seeing as Goo Monster doesn't appear to be troping any more (or is at the least on a break) they aren't about to call a vote themselves, so let's do it now. Should we change the name of this one, and are any of the suggestions good enough? Once that's decided, this one's reasonably close to launching I think?

My vote is keep as is and launch
I'm good with it. Vote aye.
I'm good with it. Vote aye. |
So you want to change the name to one of the suggestions earlier in the thread and launch the trope?
@RivetVermin, please don't make multipart motions - they lead to this sort of confusion.
MOD: Let's not bury a motion to launch deep in a "name this trope" thread. To keep things simple, please only vote on a trope name - we'll do the launch vote later.

Far as names, "Adverse Adept" strikes me as the best option.
I'm fine with Adverse Adept.
I actually didn't mind "Hating What You Are Good At", but it is a mouthful, so I also support my suggestion of "Adverse Adept"
Adverse Adept implies a lot of other things.
How about "Pot Calling Kettle"?
We already have Tu quoque.
Yeah, and it doesn't particularly fit beyond that.
I don't see how that fits.
Sorry, I misread the title and suggestions! Sorry if it cause any bother!!
This hasn't been touched in three months. It has plenty of examples and categories, it passes a quick grammar check, and the description... well, it'll do.
The only thing left to decide is the name, and that thread hasn't been touched in five months.
So here are the options:
- Do not launch
- Launch with the name "Hating What You Are Good At"
- Launch with the name "Adverse Adept"
If you don't like either of those titles, please vote for "Do not launch".

I'll vote for #3
I'll vote for #3 as well.

Well, this has been running for three days (including a weekend and a weekday), and the vote is unanimous.
Launching this as "Adverse Adept".
Er... Good thing I thought to do a dictionary check first. According to both Merriam-Webster and The Big List of Booboos and Blunders, "adverse" means harmful or unpleasant and "averse" means disliked or opposed. I think the latter is what we wanted given the context.
Launching this as "Averse Adept". EDIT: And done.
And this is what happens when what you expect to see overrides what you actually see. Until now, I would have sworn I was reading "Averse" in the thread above.
