Motion: Merge "New Media" into "Web Original"

In the 1930s, Radio was the New Media.

In the 1950s, Live-Action TV was the New Media.

In the 1980s, Video Games was the New Media.

Now, we're saying Web Original is the New Media... but only if it allows for feedback and audience participation.

This seems like a pointless distinction to me, especially since so many new tropers don't make that distinction at all and simply add all web-based works to Web Original if they don't have specidfic categories (such as Web Comics).

I propose we simply get rid of Category:New Media altogether, merging it into Category:Web Original. In addition to saving ourselves further hassle and confusion, this future-proofs the wiki for when the next new medium comes along. (If the cycle holds, it should be showing up somewhere around 2040.)

Hmm... far as this specific motion, my inclination is to support the measure - feeling kinda 60/40 on it, though.

Far as dealing with the Web Original 'category', I feel like there are useful distinctions to be made that we could use - play-by-post, Character Blog, etc. - but I'll leave that for a separate discussion after.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

I echo Umbire's feelings on this. I can see the case for depreciating it, but I also see the point for retaining it for any currently unclassified mediums.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

but I also see the point for retaining it for any currently unclassified mediums

We already have Category:Other Media.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Then we might consider merging that and New Media instead.

GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

A merger of "Other Media" and "New Media" seems the way to go for me.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Then what do we call the next media to come along? "Newer Media"?

That's hardly a future-proofing move.

(While we're on the topic, "The New Tens" and "The New Twenties" need replacement names as well, for exactly the same reason. But that's another discussion.)

EDIT: Or are you suggesting we call the merged category "Other Media"?

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

I prefer the solution @HornyLikeIAmA14YearOldGirl offered to make it a catchall category, like Miscellaneous/Other.

That was we have communal spot to put all the stuff that does not fit anything else with a proper category, and what we make categories to fit relevant items, we can then move those items into those categories later.

GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

Yeah, I meant to have "Other Media" be the one that serves as the name for the merged category.

Jlaw (talkcontribs)

What if we deactivated New Media for now and merged the existing examples, but reactivate it if a new form of storytelling comes out? Because technology is constantly evolving. We wouldn't have imagined one could tell stories in social media ten years ago.

HLIAA14YOG (talkcontribs)

I'm not so sure about it being beyond imagination. I do find the name problematic, however. We should call it Miscellaneous/Other, because looking at the examples it looks like something we could not fit anywhere else rather than specifically web original.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

We don't have a "Miscellaneous" category on All The Tropes - this proposal would create one, just for a catch-all list.

And I've been trying to get rid of "Other", since we have Other Media and don't need two categories for the same list.

Lequinni (talkcontribs)

I think we should examine the examples and sort by case? The ones who got their origin from online means (even if pre- and proto-internet, or things that mix online and offline stuff like ARGs) should be moved to Web Originals, while those who don't qualify into Art or other media get dumped into the Other category.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

So, are we all agreed that what's currently listed in "New Media" is actually "Web Original"?

Because I need to create one last subpage for Most Wonderful Sound (Sugar Wiki) and I need to know what to call it.
