Iron Man 3 is a 2013 superhero film, the third installment of the Iron Man film series and the seventh installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is the second MCU film to get at a billion dollars at the box office. It takes place after The Avengers, where Tony Stark deals with his PTSD as a terrorist known as the Mandarin is on the rise.

Reviews were mixed-to-positive with most reviews being divided on the Mandarin reveal. It had Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany and Jon Favreau returning from their roles in the previous Iron Man films with Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery/The Mandarin, Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian and Rebecca Hall as Maya Hansen.

Tropes used in Iron Man 3 include:

• Big Bad: Aldrich Killian.
• Call Forward: Stark meets Yensen at a New Year’s Eve party, which was first referenced in the first Iron Man film.
• Disc One Final Boss: The Mandarin, actually actor Trevor Slattery who used the Mandarin persona.
• Distant Prologue: The beginning is a flashback to 1999, where Tony Stark attends a New Year's Eve party.
• Meaningful Echo:
  • “I am Iron Man.”
  • ”We create our own demons.”
• Oh Crap: Stark says this word for word as his jets for his suit stop before he lifts off.
• The Reveal: The Mandarin is a persona adopted by washed-up British actor Trevor Slattery, hired by Aldrich Killian. However, the short film All Hail the King found on the Thor: The Dark World Blu-ray disk reveals that there is a real Mandarin. This Mandarin appears in 2021's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
• The Stinger: Tony Stark's narration in the film happens to be Stark talking to Bruce Banner, who he believed is his therapist.
• Trigger: Stark has these moments whenever the Battle of New York was mentioned.
