Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a 2017 film and a sequel to 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn and featuring an ensemble cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell. It is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After Ronan was destroyed, Peter Quill learns the true identity of his father.

The Guardians have become mercenaries since the events of the last movie. After doing a job for a race of Scary Dogmatic Aliens known as Sovereign, Rocket steals from them the very items they were supposed to protect even after they were paid, putting the Guardians at the top of their kill-list. They are saved by Peter's father, Ego, a alien who is actually a living planet with shape-shifting abilities, and invites Peter and his friends to a visit. Rocket, Groot, and Nebula, who was given to the Guardians by the Sovereign race as "payment", stay behind.

Meanwhile, Yondu's kidnapping of Peter finally caught up to him, and his Ravagers' faction is banished from the larger group because of it. Ayesha, the Sovereign's leader, hires Yondu's crew to hunt the Guardians for the batteries, but Yondu shows reluctance to go after Star-Lord, thanks to Peter being his adoptive son, after capturing Rocket and Groot. This leads to a mutiny. Nebula takes the opportunity to escape and storms off after Gamora to kill her.

Like the first film, it was a hit at the box office. A sequel entitled Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released in 2023.

Produced by Marvel Studios. Distributed by Walt Disney Motion Pictures.

Tropes used in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 include:
  • Action Prologue: One of the first scenes shows the Guardians fending off a monster as Groot dances along to "Mr. Blue Sky".
  • Archnemesis Dad: Ego.
  • Big Bad: Ego.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Ayesha, the queen of the Sovereigns, really wants to be a threat to the Guardians, but her plans constantly are thwarted pretty easily. Her new weapon, Adam Warlock, however, it's hinted to be a much bigger danger to them.
  • Cerebus Retcon: Meredith Quill's death by cancer seemed pretty normal, if tragic in the first movie. Here, it's revealed it was all a ploy for Ego to not get attached to a mortal too long.
  • Character Development: Nebula decides to be a friendly sister to Gamora.
  • Darker and Edgier: While it is still funny to watch, the humor is darker and the villain is more serious.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Rocket's stock-in-trade, even gets Lampshaded by Yondu.

Yondu: You like a professional asshole or what?
Rocket: Pretty much a pro.

  • Disappeared Dad: Quill never knew his father, at least until Ego showed up. It's implied to be the same for all Ego's other children, and the one time in their lives Ego did want to see them, he paid someone else to go and get them.
  • The Dragon: Peter unwittingly becomes one for Ego in the climax, being used as a channel for Ego to activate his seeds to assimilate the universe.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: Peter's cosmic powers would be of immense help against future villains, so he loses them to keep dramatic tension.
  • Flanderization: Drax's literal traits are amped up considerably.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Quill turns out to be half-Human, half-Celestial.
  • Heel Face Turn: Nebula redeems herself to help her sister.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Yondu dies saving Quill after Ego was destroyed.
  • Immediate Sequel: The film is set immediately after the first Guardians film.
  • No Ontological Inertia: Ego says and it is confirmed Peter no longer have cosmic powers once Ego is dead.
  • The Not Love Interest: Drax and Mantis interact a lot but Drax outright manifest disgust of her or treat her more like a daughter figure.
  • Not So Different: Yondu gives an epic speech to Rocket about how they are both outcasts.
  • The Stinger: There are a lot of them.
    • Adolescent Groot is seen playing video games.
    • Stan Lee talks to the Watchers.
    • Kraglin messes with Yondu's arrow.
    • Ayesha plans to release Adam.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Ego killed the children that didn't manifest cosmic powers like him.
