  • Fetish Retardant: The OAV have an... odd art style, especially for the supposed bishonen Yaoi Guys who end up having spider-leg fingers and chins so pointy they could be used as weapons. Just take a look at the picture shown in this review and decide if you'd find that sexy. ("When you're screaming at the screen for the bishounen to put his shirt back ON, you know there's something wrong.")
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Takuto Izumi is voiced by Takehito Koyasu, and also heavily inspired by a Captain Tsubasa character named Kojiro Hyuga. Flashforward to 10 years after the Zetsuai OAV... and Takehito Koyasu is the newest seiyuu for Hyuuga. First he voiced the Expy and later he voiced the original.
  • Wangst: Zarla best sums it up: "As for what [Zetsuai's] about, there's only one word that really sums the whole thing up, and that word is MELODRAMA. ENDLESS MELODRAMA. ANGST LIKE YOU'VE NEVER ANGSTED BEFORE MEN."
