  • What Could Have Been: The character was supposed to be the first openly gay wrestler, and was portrayed as one for about a month (his first major feud was sending love letters to Razor Ramon). However, gay rights groups got upset over a gay person also being "evil," so Marlena was introduced and it all became "mindgames."

• Expy: After his massive weight gain, of his cousin Rodney "Yokozuna" Anoa'i. Rikishi means "strong man" and is another term for a sumo wrestler. Also adopted the Banzai Drop as part of the package.
• Fake Nationality: As the stereotypical “Middle Eastern" Sultan.
• Fat Bastard: As a heel.
• Fun Personified: As a face, he would dance after matches with Too Cool.
• I Have Many Names: Fatu, The Sultan, Rikishi Fatu.
• Spell My Name with an "S": When he started teaming with Tool Cool his last name would either be "Fatu" or "Phatu".
• Squick: The aforementioned Stink Face maneuver.
• Tag Team: A member of the Headshrinkers with Samu and later Sionne (The Barbarian).
• Unfortunate Implications: After Fatu's face turn, the announcers pointed out that he was from American Samoa, so he was okay.
• The Voiceless: As the Sultan, makes sense because he had no tongue.
• Wild Samoan: As a member of the Headshrinkers.
• Wrestling Family: Part of the massive Samoan family with Jimmy and Jey Uso as his sons.

Shawn Michaels (Michael Shawn Hickenbottom) 1988-2010

• The Ace
• Attention Deficit Ooh Shiny: Surprisingly, it gets worse as he gets older. He was focused - if juvenily-focused - when he was younger. In the 2006 revival of DX, he was lucky if he could go an entire promo or 3-minute segment without either getting distracted or running around like a three-year-old.

• Blood Brothers: The entire Kliq, but especially Triple H.
• Book Ends: Ladies and gentlemen, the Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels, has left the building.
• Beware the Nice Ones: As a face. Especially after his return in 2002.
• Breakup Breakout: Famously, from The Rockers, which makes Marty Jannetty his Garfunkel.
  • To stress how important the Rockers' breakup was, not only has his superkick to Marty Janetty become an iconic image, Marty Janetty himself has become synonymous with the less-talented person of a broken-up partnership.
  • In fact, this is such a huge example, the originally planned name for Breakup Breakout was "The Janetty".
• Breaking the Fourth Wall: One of the most infamous examples in wrestling history, he's one of the four wrestlers who publicly said buh-bye to Kayfabe with the Curtain Call.
• Canadian Wrestling Fans Hate Shawn Michaels: So, so much after the Montreal Screwjob. But around 2006, things started to look better.

  • The first ladder match in the WWF was between Michaels and Bret Hart on a Saturday Night's Main Event.

• Heroic BSOD: After Triple H's second quad tear at New Year's Revolution '07, Shawn is getting beat down by Rated-RKO (Randy Orton and Edge), who are trash-talking DX while they do it. Shawn rolls out the ring, picks up Hunter's sledgehammer and stares at it for a good minute or two. Cue the Roaring Rampage of Revenge.
  • He's also had a series of them in 2010, from losing the Royal Rumble onwards.
• Heterosexual Life Partners: Not that we don't wonder about the "heterosexual" tag, but Triple H and Shawn Michaels are, in the words of Jim Ross, "closer than a lot of brothers" in Real Life as well as in-character.
  • In his book, Shawn calls Hunter "one of the best men I've ever known" and admits he wouldn't have survived 1996-2000 without Hunter.

Yokozuna (Rodney Agatupu Anoa'i) 1992-1996

• Ass Kicks You: The Banzai Drop. Given his girth, it served as his finisher.
• Awesome but Impractical: His Banzai Drop. If he hit it, the match was over. No questions asked. But getting up to the top rope and positioning the opponent in a position where he could hit it was quite difficult and it was often how he lost his matches.

• The Big Guy / The Brute: Depends on his Face/Heel status.
• Designated Villain
• Evil Foreigner (Even though he was Hawaiian Samoan)
• Fake Nationality: Subverted as even though his gimmick was that of a sumo wrestler that trained in Japan and carried their flag, he was billed as being from the Polynesian Islands. Too bad this only lasted about a year or so.
