  • Accidental Innuendo: There's one scene early in the play where Fabrizio looks down aghast at himself, motioning towards his legs. He's actually referring to his clothes, but the innuendo becomes even greater when one factors in the relevant line in Italian, where he says "She can't love a little boy!"
  • Unfortunate Implications: Clara is mentally retarded and yet she is allowed to get married, with her husband completely unaware of her condition. Shouldn't he know her a little better than that before he marries her, and is it right to allow someone with the mind of a child to agree to marriage?
    • Signor Naccarelli gives Margaret a kiss on the lips when he's already married. Margaret appears to leave her own husband shortly afterward. Note that Signor's second son Giuseppe is also having an affair. Some productions justify it as being part of Italian society to have a mistress, other downplay the kiss from a romantic implication to a friendly one.
