  • Complete Monster: Esteban García.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Arguably, Esteban Trueba.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Esteban García repeatedly rapes Alba. Not only rapes her, but does so while mocking her for being a Trueba..
  • Pragmatic Adaptation: The film is actually quite faithful to the main plot, character personalities and motives, and main themes of the book, but it has compressed the action and restrict it to two generations of the main family (the book actually covers three) and cut a lot of characters (compressible, since they were so many). Most notably, the Trueba twins are absent, and Blanca and Alba's story arcs are compressed in the former; Alba is still present, but as a young child instead of her young adult incarnation.
  • Squick: Quite a bit of it, but almost nothing can top the description of Esteban's mother Ester's pretty much putrified legs when Esteban returns to her. It's so horrible that Esteban, normally a super stoic and macho Jerkass, pretty much collapses in tears of anger when he leaves the room.
  • The Woobie: Waaaay too many.
