Experimenting with putting all tropes on main work pages; stuck.

Using some new templates (Template:tabtop, Template:tabnext, Template:tabend), I feel it would be possible to make a new sort of layout where regular tropes, YMMV, and Trivia are all listed on one page. I've noted that some people feel that YMMV tropes are treated as though they've been shoved away into a dark corner. But if I can get this to work, it should serve to address these concerns. And of course, such portable tabbability would have potential for other things as well.

Yet it seems that I can't quite get the templates to function properly. I've studied a template with similar functionality, Template:Sidemenu and Template:Sidemenuend, but something seems to not be clicking right.

Could one of you take a look at these templates, and see if you can spot the bug?

Disclaimer: I'm still a novice at Mediawiki templates. That said, I spent a while trying to strip Tabtop down to its bare essentials to figure out what's happening, and failed. It's obvious what's wrong -- the parameter isn't getting plugged in, and for some reason the Documentation template is being included even though it's inside a Noinclude. But why and how elude me. Even when I reduced the template to

<tabber>
{{{1}}}=

it didn't behave properly. And what little I know about templating said that it should.

(Oh, and I tried {{=}} on the = too, just in case. No go.)

Here's hoping Geth or Brent can solve this.

Did some testing, figured out the issue.

Basically, sorry guys, but making parser hooks into templates usually works like crap because of the problems you guys encountered, specifically the first template making the whole thing goofy unless you add an ending hook, which of course screws up the whole template.

I can, however, offer a different solution: I can add the parser hooks and related elements of how the Tabber box needs to be formatted to the edittools box (or you guys can, let me know if you want my help with that), or even add a new menu to segregate it from the other stuff to avoid confusion, and people can add the markup from that menu thanks to how the CharInsert extension buttons work.

In short, the templates won't work, but adding the markup to the Edittools box will.

Well, I just added it to the Edittools box. It doesn't look as nice as I hoped, but it functions well enough.

I managed to make it so that the text cursor is at the start of the name, to help indicate that you want to change those words, not define the name after the equals sign.

I'm not Geth so feel free to take my two cents with a grain of salt, but especially on a work stuffed to the brim with tropes like Skyrim, merging main tropes with YMMV makes a page seem incredibly bloated. I feel that having both sections on separate pages works well enough, and as the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Gonna have to side with Noxious on this one.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Mm. You do have a point, Nox. I'm already having problems editing in two different browsers when the pages get too large, this would just exacerbate the problem for me. So despite trying to help with the coding, I'm going to have to vote nay as well.
