Proposal: Rename to "Diegetic Theme Cameo"

Summary by Robkelk

Renamed.

This trope is far too close to Title Theme Drop for comfort, and its similar title does not help. I've already confused the tropes when doing work on Violet Evergarden (anime), and I don't want any future editors to make the same mistake (in fact, the tropes are getting muddy as I'm writing this!). In case you don't know the difference between the two tropes:

  • Theme Tune Cameo is when the theme is used in universe.
  • Title Theme Drop is when the theme is used, but the characters can't hear it; it's background music, instead of playing in the world of the work.

Doing so would explicitly clarify that the drop must be in universe. Links need to be updated on relevant trope pages if the proposal passes.

Seems okay to me. I vote yes.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I like "exact trope titles". Voting in favour of the rename.

Jlaw (talkcontribs)

Vote to rename

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Likewise, vote yes.

GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

Agreed on this rename.

ThunderKat (talkcontribs)

Just to clarify so I'm not misunderstanding here: what you're saying is if the main theme of a work is used within the context of the universe the work is set in? Like, for example: using the example above, the main theme of Violet Evergarden is heard in the episode either played on a radio, or performed by a character. Am I in the right ball park?

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Violet Evergarden (and the movie!) uses the other trope Title Theme Drop. You are referring to the current trope Theme Tune Cameo (which I'm proposing we rename). The series does not use Theme Tune Cameo because the characters cannot hear the theme tune. You can see the explanation I added in the Anime and Manga section. The fact that you're confused is supporting evidence for the rename.

I know, I was just being hypothetical. I appreciate your input, nonetheless. Sorry if that didn't come across very well.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Or like how Ruby is listening to the first volume theme to RWBY on her headphones in the very first episode, or how Usagi and Naru practice singing "Moonlight Densetsu" for a talent show in Sailor Moon, yes.

ThunderKat (talkcontribs)

Ah I see. This makes a lot more sense now. What does "Diegetic" mean, though? Never heard that word before...

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

It means "occurring within the context of the story and able to be heard by the characters".

ThunderKat (talkcontribs)

Damn, that's a lot to cram into a single word! Thanks for your input either way, though.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

You're welcome. And if you think that's a lot, well, I trimmed the definition a bit. And if you really want a mouthful, check out diegesis, the word/concept it comes from.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

<facepalm> Thank you, Rob.

Kuma (talkcontribs)

I vote yes.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

This has run for over a week, with multiple "yes" votes and no "no" votes. Renaming the trope.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Oh, it's going to take a while to update the links - every "Theme Tune Cameo" link needs to be checked to determine whether it should point to Diegetic Theme Cameo or Title Theme Drop. EDIT: Or both. Ten done, 385 to go...

EDIT: Some of which are unsolvable because of insufficient context.
