Star Fox 64/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Best Level Ever: Fichina, Katina, Bolse, Area 6, Venom, Zoness, the list goes on.
  • Catharsis Factor: Shooting any member of Star Wolf down is satisfying, especially Pigma. Hearing that smug creep whine and even bawl in one potential defeat quote is the icing on the cake. Andrew is similarly satisfying, but moreso due to his idiocy and overconfidence as opposed to any genuine sociopathy on his part.
  • Complete Monster: Andross, the depraved Big Bad himself, definitely qualifies. He's turned multiple planets into lifeless wastelands with his twisted experiments, and deliberately has his men target civilian populations during their attacks.
    • There's also Pigma Dengar, who sells out his friends on the Star Fox team for money and has a fairly sadistic personality, as evidenced by the quote below.

Pigma: Daddy screamed REAL good before he died!

  • Crowning Moment of Awesome: Redirecting the train on Macbeth so that it blows up the factory.
  • Crowning Music of Awesome: Quite a few. Star Wolf's theme is probably the most famous.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Thanks to their memorable boss fights, fun Boss Banter, and awesome battle music, the Star Wolf team are easily the most popular members of Fox McCloud's rogues' gallery. Special mention goes to Wolf O'Donnell for embodying Evil Is Cool, and Pigma Dengar for hitting that sweet spot between rotten to the core and hilariously entertaining.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Pigma crossed this before the game even began by betraying James McCloud to his death. And he loves to rub it in every chance he gets.
  • Narm Charm: "Ohhhhhh shoot!"
  • The Scrappy: Slippy. If any of your wingmen are in trouble, chances are it's this guy. And more often than not, he'll find himself back in mortal danger immediately after you've saved him, all while begging for Fox to help him in that grating voice of his.
    • Rescued From the Scrappy Heap: With that being said, Slippy's sweet and endearing nature did warm him up to fans as time went on. And of course, the game's leaked uncompressed voice lines showing how cute his voice actually is certainly helped.
  • Serial Numbers Filed Off: The Sauceror boss of Katina is almost exactly like the flying saucers of Independence Day, right down to the base-destroying laser that requires the core to be exposed.
  • Tear Jerker: The good ending. When Andross launches a suicide attack after his defeat, Fox's long lost father James leads him to safety while easing his mind with his words of wisdom, and praising him all the way. He vanishes as quickly as he appeared, leaving Fox and the player to wonder if he was secretly alive this whole time, a ghost, or even a figment of Fox's imagination. But no matter where the truth lies, it's still incredibly moving, and Fox desperately looking around for him after he disappears is gut-wrenching.
  • That One Boss
    • The Golemmech, the penultimate boss on Venom's easy route. The pillars that come out of the wall can be incredibly hard to dodge, and it gets even harder if only one part of him is left to attack.
    • Sarumarine, the boss of Zoness. He can only be damaged by bombs until all his parts are off, it's easy to attack the parts in the wrong order, and his morning star can easily clip your wings.
    • The battle with Star Wolf on Venom 2. Much harder than on Fichina/Bolse. Continuing Is Painful, indeed, as your hyper lasers can quickly down two of the fighters before Wolf starts annoying you. The encounter is also much more difficult if you're missing team members, since Star Wolf members go after you if your corresponding wingman is down.
  • That One Level: Sector Z: it's an Escort Mission of sorts, where you have to protect the Great Fox from incoming missiles. It's swarming with Invader-III fighters (which have the best AI of all the enemies in the game bar Star Wolf or the Bolse Fighters) which means you'll constantly be listening to your wingmen calling you for help and it has just enough junk on the outskirts to ensure that you'll almost certainly crash into something and rip off your wings. Worst still is that if you're going for the medal, your wingmen can actually steal your points if they're the one to land the last hit on the missile: and if you come from Zoness you'll have to contend with Katt kill-stealing from you as well.
    • Aquas. There's only one way to get to it, the level is slow (and underwater) and due to how the Blue-Marine's missile work (locking on to the first target your crosshairs hits, and you can only fire one missile at a time), it's difficult to get the required 150 hits to earn the medal for the stage. On the other hand, it's significantly easier to get a high score than Katina or Fichina, both of which are all-range missions.
  • Vindicated by History: A weird, specific example would be the game's voice acting. A lot of the performances were originally regarded as So Bad It's Good or in Slippy's case, just plain bad. But when the 2020 Nintendo Gigaleak included the original uncompressed audio for all the game's voice acting, fans were surprised by how genuinely good the voice acting was. The audio compression did not do it favors and hampered performances that were far better than most 90's era video game voiceovers. Slippy's uncompressed voice gets a lot of love in particular for being Adorkable incarnate as opposed to grating and annoying.
