Sonic the Hedgehog

= Voiced by Jaleel White =

• Badass
• Big Brother Instinct: To Tails, as with most interpretations.
• Big Good
• Catch Phrase: "Way past cool!", "Gotta juice", and "Let's do it to it!"
• Deadpan Snarker: He definitely had his moments of this.
• The Hero
• Idiot Hero: Is fairly Book Dumb and often needs Sally's guidance in missions. He has notable showings of resourcefulness however.
• Mr. Vice Guy: He's very prideful.
• Race Lift: Simply put, Jaleel White, who is dark skinned, didn't want Sonic to sound too black.
• Smug Super: To the point some of Robotnik's schemes manipulate his ego.
• Small Name, Big Ego: Sonic is genuinely competent and heroic, however he has no problem exaggerating this in his constant bragging, a lot of times actually screwing up missions due to his overconfidence.
• Trademark Favourite Food: Chili-dogs.

Princess Sally Acorn

= Voiced by Kath Soucie =

Leader of the Freedom Fighters in SatAM and the Archie comics. Based very roughly on "Ricky", the captive squirrel freed from Badniks in the original games (Sonic the Comic used a similar character more akin to her original games counterpart as a minor extra early on).

• All There in the Manual: Her surname 'Acorn' is never mentioned in SatAm, though is stated in the show's bible and frequently in the comic books.
• Ascended Extra: She was based on one of the animals that were freed from the badniks in the original game.
• Blue Eyes
• Breakout Character: Had more of a supporting role in earlier episodes. Arguably as prominent a character as Sonic himself later on.
• Closer to Earth: Albeit balanced by occasional bouts of arrogance and childishness equal to Sonic.
• The Comically Serious: Often when paired against Sonic, though she is often more jovial than most examples.
• Deadpan Snarker: Oh yes.
• Disappeared Dad
• Damsel in Distress: Played with. She is one of the most competent Freedom Fighters, but also one of Robotnik's favorite hostage choices.
  • Makes more sense when you consider that she's the leader of the Freedom Fighters. One great step to defeating a resistance is to crush its morale. What's a good way to do that? Take out the leader.
• The Everyman: Borderline example, despite her role as Princess, Sally is arguably the nearest to "normal" in terms of personality compared to most of her wackier comrades.
• Everything's Better with Princesses
• Fiery Redhead
• Foil: Largely to Sonic, her cautious and uptight personality contrasting Sonic's brash and reckless persona. Both share a similar arrogance and ego that only fuels their bickering more. Also to Bunnie, but less so.
• Hartman Hips: depending on the artist.
• Honorary Aunt: To Tails, who calls her "Aunt Sally".
• Inferiority Superiority Complex: Sally is often overbearing and condescending to her team about their blunderings, especially Sonic, though under pressure will often admit she is just terrified of what Robotnik might do to them.
• Jack of All Stats: Sally is the leader and tactitian for the Freedom Fighters, she is also a hacking and computing expert, has almost as prominant mechanical skills as Rotor and frequently acts as a Team Mom. The only thing she seems inept in is physical power (though this was utilized more in the comic adaptation). This arguably also played part in her Spotlight-Stealing Squad status, since she could often take the place of other characters in a story with a compressed cast.

• Only Sane Man: Definitely has traits of this in season 2, especially when frustrated by Sonic or Antoine.
• Positive Discrimination: Accused of such in the cartoon, especially in season 2, although it was more like Surrounded by Idiots. Often came off as the most competent and least flawed Freedom Fighter, with a lot of Idiot Balls performed by Sonic having been due to ignoring Sally's advice.

• Royals Who Actually Do Something
• She's a Man In Japan: The squirrel she was based on was male in the Japanese version.
• Spotlight-Stealing Squad: She's used as a co lead in every second season episode (absent in only one Antoine short). It's not rare for her to be Sonic's only team mate in some episodes.

• Too Clever by Half: Extremely intelligent and resourceful, but occasionally competes with Sonic in terms of overconfidence and arrogance.

Antoine

= Voiced by Rob Paulsen =

• Two Guys and a Girl: In Warp Sonic. Antoine is Sonic's rival for Sally's affection.

• Child Soldier
• Dirty Coward: In season 2, thanks to Flanderization. He is willing to sell out the Freedom Fighters at some points.
• Gratuitous French Phrases
• Hopeless Suitor: To Sally.
• Idiot Hero
• Interspecies Romance: His unrequited crush on Sally.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: At times, though becoming an outright Jerkass later on.
• Leitmotif: He has his own theme tune in Season 2.
• The Load: Has few skills or redeeming aspects (outside occasional dumb luck) and on a few occasions manages to screw up a mission with his incompetence. The reason Sonic and Sally drag him along all the time is a mystery.
• Lovable Coward: Arguably intended as such, Flanderization in leaned him more as a Jerkass Dirty Coward.
• "No Respect" Guy: In season 2.
• Plucky Comic Relief: In season 1.
• Shadow Archetype: Sonic is arrogant and endangers the team frequently due to his lack of tact. Compared to Antoine however he can back up his boasting a lot better and can show humility.
• Spotlight-Stealing Squad: The star of the second season shorts. Also often Sonic's second team mate in missions (as illogical as this seems to be).
• Straw Loser: All the Freedom Fighters have noticable flaws. Antoine however, is a bastion of negative human qualities and has few redeeming ones to compensate. In general, if one character has a flaw, Antoine has it tens times more.

Bunnie Rabbot

= Voiced by Christine Cavanaugh =

A cyborg rabbit who filled the role of The Big Guy in the Five-Man Band.

• Cursed with Awesome: A victim of Robotocization, which grants her amazing strength. She hates it.

• Faux Action Girl: In the second season.
• Hollywood Cyborg
• Honorary Aunt: To Tails who calls her "Aunt Bunnie".
• Out of Focus: She stays behind a lot more in the Second Season. Even the odd time she takes part she rarely acts as little more than a generic team mate.
• Punny Name
• Southern Belle: Much more tomboyish than most examples.
• Super Strength: Her metal arm gives her this.

Rotor the Walrus

= Voiced by Mark Ballou (Season 1), Cam Brainard (Season 2) =

A Walrus who served as the team's smart guy.

• Art Evolution: While several other characters go through minor design changes, Rotor's are most evident, gradually becoming chubbier and more anthropomorphic. He goes through at least two drastic design changes throughout the show's run (once after the pilot, another during the second season).

• Nice Hat: It's red in the cartoon, and yellow in the comics.

Sir Charles "Uncle Chuck" Hedgehog

Sonic's uncle who was roboticized when Sonic was very young.

• Heroic Sacrifice: He delayed Robotnik's attempts to roboticize Sonic and his friends when they were children so they could escape, but he was caught and roboticized in the process.
• Honorary Uncle: Everyone refers to him as "Uncle Chuck".
• Miniature Senior Citizens: He was pretty short compared to the younger King Max.
• The Mole
• Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: He was the original inventor for the roboticizer, which was made to help old people live longer. Unfortunately, it had a side effect of wiping their minds clean and they had no will of their own, which is why Robotnik stole the idea from Chuck after he thought he destroyed the blueprints for it.

Robotnik

= Voiced by Jim Cummings =

The Big Bad, responsible for overthrowing the king of Mobotropolis, and converting the city into a heavily industrialized center. He rules with an iron fist, roboticizing the entire populace in order to quell any and all rebellion.

• Bad Boss: He’s very abusive to Snively, as well as his robotic minions.
• Bald of Evil
• Big Bad: Though this was going to switch over to Naugus in Season 3.
• Black Eyes of Crazy: They’re black pits with ominous glowing red lights.
• Card-Carrying Villain: He’s quite boastful of his evil.
• Dangerously Genre Savvy: In Season One, he has noticable bouts of this, even playing on Sonic's flaws at times, and at least once actually would Just Shoot Him. Not as prominant in Season Two (see Stupid Evil).

• For the Evulz: He gets a disturbing, almost lustful looking enjoyment everytime he causes pain and suffering around him (it just makes him "tingly all over").

• Knight of Cerebus: Unlike most other counterparts of the doctor, Robotnik's actions are depicted in a far more serious and sinister light, especially compared to his nephew. Lightened in the second season, where he gains more comical fluctuations, and we are introduced to an entity that's makes even him cower in fear.

• Red Right Hand: More like robotic left arm.
• Stupid Evil: While in his past he was able to make lengthened charades to maintain his plans for power, by Season Two, Robotnik just can't resist Kicking The Dog at the most inappropriate time.
• Unwilling Roboticisation : His modus operandi.
• Villainous Breakdown: "I really hate that hedgehog. I hate him! Hate him! HATE HIM! HATE! HATE! HATE!! HATE!!! HAAAAATTTTEEEEEEEE!!!!"
• Xanatos Speed Chess: Very good at this.

Colin "Snively" Kintobor

= Voiced by Charlie Adler =

Robotnik's nephew and right-hand man. Often used as the doctor's punching bag, Snively has gained a conniving and ambitious personality intent on overthrowing his uncle.

• Butt Monkey: Starting in Season 2 he was regularly used as a punching bag by Robotnik and often treated as a joke by the Freedom Fighters. Granted, in that season his true conniving traits have been shown.
• The Dog Bites Back: Word of God states Snively would have betrayed Robotnik in the third season and joined the Freedom Fighters.
• The Renfield: In season One, he is far less hateful towards his uncle and even seems to enjoy getting his rare praise.
• Dirty Coward: As you'd expect.
• Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow
• Laughably Evil: Not much more pleasant than Robotnik, though far more blundering and goofy.
• Not So Harmless: While often seen as far more pathetic than Robotnik by the Freedom Fighters, he actually gotten closer to discovering and conquering Knothole than his uncle did. In the planned Third Season he would have briefly took control of Robotropolis, though would lose control later on.
• Servile Snarker: Often had back handed remarks to his Uncle Julian (albeit not to his face).
• The Starscream: Not as actively as in the comics, however by the Second Season he has blatantly come to resent his uncle's abuse and makes a few shrewd plans behind his back (he once attempted an attack on Knothole while Robotnik was gone, as well as making alterations to his base that would ultimately save his life when it was destroyed).
• You Have Failed Me...: Robotnik attempts this indirectly in "The Doomsday Project", leaving him to die in his imploding base out of spite. Snively however had predicted as much from his uncle and had made his own methods of escape.

Robotnik: Only room for one, Snively! *closes escape pod* Snively: You don't give me enough credit, Julian!

King Maximilian Acorn

= Voiced by Tim Curry =

Former King of Mobotropolis and father of Princess Sally. Deposed by Robotnik and exiled to the Void.

Ixis Naugus

= Voiced by Michael Bell =

A wizard who from the Void. Though he was antagonistic towards Robotnik, he was slated to become season three's Big Bad.

• Sealed Evil in a Can: In both SatAM and the comics, Naugus spent years trapped in the Void/Zone of Silence (the name depends on the continuity). In the comics, he escaped and was resealed several times before escaping permanently.
• What Could Have Been: Had SatAM not been cancelled, he would have taken over as Big Bad of the series.
