Nekopara Vol. 2

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Nekopara Vol. 2 is the third installment in the Nekopara Visual Novel series. The game focuses on Coconut and Azuki, who develop a romantic affection for Kashou.

Business is booming for La Soleil, the patissiere run by Kashou Minaduki with his two catgirls, Chocola and Vanilla, his sister Shigure, and the Minaduki family’s four catgirl sisters.

Among them are the sarcastic oldest sister who hides behind a facade of toughness, Azuki, and the clumsy youngest sister who always tries her best even if she ends up doing more harm than good, Coconut. No one got along better than these two catgirls when they were younger, but lately, they’ve been fighting all the time.

Despite their sisterly love, a small misunderstanding ends up driving a wedge between them. As the story of these catgirl sisters unfolds, they’ll grow to understand each other and strengthen their familial bonds in this heartfelt catgirl comedy, which is only a little lewd. Now open for business!

Tropes used in Nekopara Vol. 2 include:
  • Adaptation Explanation Extrication: After sucking on Kashou's finger and freaking out, Azuki went to rest in his bedroom, but because of the smell of his bed, she masturbated with an immense passion until she fell asleep. Vanilla found her like that and changed her clothes, later using that fact to blackmail Azuki into admitting her feelings to Kashou, a fact which is censored in the All-Ages version.
  • Arbitrarily-Large Bank Account: Shigure, upon seeing Chocola and Vanilla shopping online and getting impressed with a type of tuna valued at 1 270 000 yen, suggests buying the whole tuna for them if they behave for the bell renewal. However, for her to do so, they would have to buy a refrigerator just for the tuna. Shigure offers to buy another whole tuna for Kashou, but he declines.
    • Kashou values his little sister's wealth as several times more than his store's worth.
  • Bad Liar: Chocola and Vanilla try to lie to Shigure that they haven't eaten takoyaki on the way home. They don't go very far with that.

Cinnamon: That's an awfully sloppy lie, you know. Not that I don't like it~

  • The game then labels them as "Dumbass Catgirl Sisters"

Kashou: (thinking) I can tell that her brother complex is getting much worse.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Discussed by Coconut, who really gets into the role of a little sister to Kashou, calling him "onii-chan." Some of the other catgirls later note on the fact.
  • Big Damn Hero: Coconut saves Milk from a car collision.
    • Pinky Swear: Milk pinky swears to Coconut that she won't make her master sad again.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: When faced with Kashou in the climactic encounter, Azuki freezes, even with Vanilla present.

Vanilla: You've come this far, but you can't still be honest with yourself?

  • Cassandra Truth: When Coconut reveals that she eavesdropped on Azuki and Kashou's discussion about her, Azuki tries to explain that they weren't making fun of her and scolds her for making assumptions. Given her harsh treatment of Coconut, though, it's not surprising she refuses to believe her.
  • Continuity Nod: Kashou's bedroom remains unchanged from the time Shigure redesigned it.
  • Developers' Foresight: Upon encountering Coconut after she runs away in the aftermath of her outburst, should you try to pet her, she will let out a sad sound as her sad expression remains unchanged.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Conversed when Kashou cleans Chocola and Vanilla's ears. Then they start moaning...
  • Azuki drops a bowl of custard, which spills on her face and Kashou's hands. That white, sticky custard... In the scene's Intermission, Cinnamon thinks Azuki is covered in "Kashou's impure white stuff".
  • Excuse Plot: A subplot involves Chocola and Vanilla having to take a bell renewal exam in order to keep their bells, something that none of the other Minaduki catgirls have to do. This mostly exists to remove Chocola and Vanilla from the story while placing the focus on Kashou's relationships with Coconut and Azuki.
  • Fancy Dinner: Kashou invites Azuki to an expensive restaurant to reward her on her good work and to let her relax.
  • Freudian Slip: When Coconut succeeds in breaking an egg without stressing out, she congratulates herself and almost calls Kashou "Onii-cha--" before getting embarrassed and correcting herself ("Kashou-sama"). Kashou doesn't mind it.
  • Gilligan Cut:
    • Coconut wants special cooking training from Kashou (to prove Azuki wrong) and he accepts. Thirty minutes later, and Coconut is emotionally broken down.
    • Coconut volunteers to make a cake with Kashou and Azuki. He seems oddly lenient in letting her do it, citing her "hidden potential." Coconut says she'll give it her all. Cut to her wailing about completely messing up the cake (she put cream on it the wrong way). Kashou wonders how in the world she did that and Azuki says she expected that to happen.
      • Kashou doesn't think the cake can be salvaged. Cut to Azuki having done just that, with the cake in perfect shape (there's even a standing ovation in the background).
  • Gratuitous French: The subtitle: "Des sœurs filles-chats très gentilles" (Very kind catgirl sisters)
    • In the epilogue, some of Shigure's Engrish is translated into French.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: Shigure, when kissed on the cheek by her brother, goes completely gaga ("Ababababababa!"). She faints, twitching, and nosebleeds a pool of blood. Cinnamon reacts with How Dare You Die on Me!
  • I Knew It!: The day after Coconut's first time, Vanilla says "I told you Master is a perv."
  • Inelegant Blubbering: An aural example, during Coconut's breakdown after the special training.
  • Interrupted Intimacy/Sorry to Interrupt: Subverted, Deconstructed. In the kitchen, Kashou and Chocola are right in the middle of foreplay when Coconut opens the door. Visibly embarrassed, she apologizes and attempts to leave, but Kashou grabs her shoulder. At this point, the two wait awkwardly, not knowing what to do. Coconut is struggling with her emotions, between attraction to Kashou and embarrasment at herself for witnessing a sexual relationship. That's when Chocola steps in and shows her how it's done.
  • Lampshade Hanging: The game's premise is Discussed from time to time by Vanilla, Chocola and Shigure.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After Coconut runs away after Azuki slapped her both figuratively and literally, she is trembling while holding the offending hand. Kashou even notes that Azuki looks as if she was the one who was slapped.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: When Shigure talks business with La Soleil:

Shigure: Nii-sama, it won't take long before La Soleil makes its debut on the world stage! Hoh-hohoho!♪
Kashou: (thinking) ...My little sister's knack for business sure is scary.

  • Shigure laughs her heart out when she discovers Coconut and Kashou spent the night together and when the same happens with Azuki.
  • Not So Different: Right in the aftermath of Coconut's outburst, Kashou recalls to Azuki the time when he tried to help Shigure and they got into a huge fight.
  • Oblivious to Love: Kashou still doesn't seem to understand the implications of his generous acts to his catgirls (and Shigure). For instance:

Shigure: Teehee, Nii-sama, you're always so smooth. If only I wasn't your little sister...
Kashou: Hm? What do you mean?
(Shigure shakes her head)
Shigure: Oh, nothing, nothing.

  • Oh Crap: When Kashou receives a call from the Minaduki home. With his mom and Shigure going with Chocola and Vanilla for their bell renewal exams, he fears that it could be his father calling. Fortunately, it's just Azuki calling to check up on Coconut.
  • Out of Focus: While Chocola and Vanilla are arguably among the main characters, they take a back seat to Azuki and Coconut. Lampshaded when they complain to Kashou that he's been neglecting them.
  • Put on a Bus: Shigure volunteers to go with Chocola and Vanilla for their bell renewal test, with Chocola shouting for help to Kashou, who pretends to ignore her. Their training takes more time than the usual week.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Azuki delivers one to Coconut after slapping her right in the middle of her outburst.
  • Running Gag: Azuki getting petted and her purring by instinct.
  • Second-Act Misunderstanding: After Kashou and Azuki's dinner at a fancy restaurant, they return to the bakery. Azuki speaks about sweet-talking Coconut, like she usually does, and Kashou replies in a joking matter. Suddenly, Coconut appears, confounded and shocked at their words. Kashou is completely aware of the implications and knows that what he and Azuki were discussing could be misinterpreted as them making fun of Coconut. He thinks about choosing his words carefully. Unfortunately, Azuki opens her mouth...
    • Azuki slaps Coconut right in the middle of her outburst and tells her off. Coconut then runs away in tears.
  • Self-Deprecation: In-Universe. As Coconut and Azuki hug in reconciliation:

Azuki: Big sisters who make their little sisters cry are just the worst, aren't they...?

  • Later:

Coconut: Sorry... I wasted so much of your time...
Azuki: It's not just your fault, you know. Only one of us is allowed to make self-deprecatin' jokes.

  • Sequel Hook: Cinammon teases Maple about Kashou's future romantic conquests and makes herself drool in preversion, while Shigure orders Chocola and Vanilla to teach the two other catgirls to capture Ni-sama's heart.

Cinammon: (to Maple) Um... Maybe... It's just a guess now, but just maybe... if this pattern keeps up... Do you think that... you and I will get our turns next~?
Maple: What? What are your talking about, 'pattern'? Could you not talk to me like I'm some sort of loose Molly cat?

  • Ship Teasing: Discussed. At the kitchen, Chocola and Vanilla lay their playful opinions on the possible relationship between Kashou and Coconut and/or Azuki. The catgirls involved get flustered, and Kashou ends up thinking about it.
  • Skinship Grope: In a later scene, Coconut rubs her whole body at Kashou, as he desperately tries to resist his temptations, when Chocola pops in and demands a rub for herself. She starts to rub against her older sister ("Hm... hmhm... hrmm...") when:

Coconut: Wh-what's wrong, Chocola? Is there... something wrong with me?
Chocola: Coco-chan, your boobies are so cushiny! So flubby-wubby! Wow, this is crazy! They feel so squishy, meow!

  • Status Quo Is God: Even after Coconut's special training and her claiming she won't get riled up by Azuki's insults, they still eventually bicker. Lampshaded by Maple, Cinnamon and Kashou.

"Some things never change"

  • Stealth Insult: After Coconut is tutored by Kashou, she manages to do a better job than in the past:

Coconut: Howzat, Azuki? Even I can manage this with a little effort!
Azuki: Whoa, whoa, that's awesome! Looks like you're finally at the top of the bottom. Keep it up, keep it up.
Coconut: (To Kashou) Did you hear, Onii-chan?! Azuki praised me! SHE praised me!!

Cinnamon: (about Azuki and Coconut fighting) They're going at it quite a bit today, aren't they? (gets embarrassed) Ah, I don't mean 'going at it' in that way. It's not like that, okay?
Maple: Cinnamon, could you stop? (looks sideways) I don't want people thinking I'm associated with you.

Kashou: What's Chocola up to?
Vanilla: She went to take her bath. She's probably taking off her panties right about now.
Kashou: I don't need to know that much, Vanilla.

  • Tough Love: Azuki is under the impression that her insults to Coconut work in that way. This comes back to bite her as when Coconut believes that she and Kashou were making fun of her, she tries to explain that they weren't but Coconut doesn't believe her.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Azuki is arguably the main reason for Coconut's self-esteem issues as she constantly insults and berates her nearly at each opportunity. Coconut even calls her out for never encouraging and supporting her during her outburst. And while Kashou is carefully looking for a way to diffuse the situation, Azuki opens her mouth which leads to events where Coconut ends up running off in tears.
  • Video Game Caring Potential: Kashou will sometimes mention that he pats his catgirls (or Shigure) on the head. This suggests the player to do the same with the touch function.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Chocola has been complaining about having to take a 2nd bell test in order to keep her bell. But when she tries to weasel her way out of it, Shigure has had enough:

Shigure: Silence! You cower at mention of the bell test, yet you still call yourself a catgirl of the Minaduki family?

  • Coconut really lays into Azuki, after overhearing her and Kashou seemingly make fun of her. Stating that sisters are supposed to support each other yet Azuki took every opportunity to tear her down.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Coconut learns to accept who she is thanks to Kashou.
  • You Are Not Alone: Kashou consoles a crying Coconut and helps her with her self-loathing by stating her strengths as well as the faults of everyone else - including himself. Showing her she's no better or worse than they are.
  • You're Not My Father: Coconut, during her outburst, impulsively rejects Kashou and Azuki as relatives.
