My Little Unicorn: Magic is Believing/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

YMMV tropes for Mykan's My Little Unicorn: Magic is Believing, the FiM fanfic-that-isn't-a-fanfic.

  • Accidental Innuendo: Lightning's main weapon is the Rainbow Rod, a long stick with a ball, which shoots rainbows and has to be held tightly between his hooves.
    • Even better: After using it, Lightning is usually exhausted and it takes a certain amount of time to recharge.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Dementia, Mysterious, and Rep-Stallion, after having lost their powers in battle, turn into a pathetic bunch of losers who think the only thing that is left to do for them is to die. Cue Nightmare Moon offering them new powers.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: The Grand Ruler: benevolent king, or racist tyrant?
    • Unicornicopia: Paradise on Earth, or autocratic dystopia?
    • Titan: Complete Monster with no redeeming qualities at all, or a bitter old man who lost his mind because no one ever gave him a chance, leaving turning to the dark side as his only option?
  • Ass Pull: Here's a short list of examples:
    • Lightning suddenly being able to summon the Uniforce because he remembers to believe, right when Titan is going to kill him.
    • Brain turns out to have a spaceship in his backyard, which the others use to escape the exploding Unicornicopia.
    • Celesto and Celestia fusing and turning into the Great Celestial Ruler, who destroys Titan.
  • Author Tract: Every chapter of the rewritten story starts or ends with a rant by the author of how much better this story is compared to the original show.
  • Cliché Storm: Let's see: The villain is an Obviously Evil wizard who lives in a dark castle in the dimension of darkness. His minions are a Terrible Trio consisting out of a shallow girl, a schemer, and a brute, none of whom possess any redeeming or positive qualities. On the other hoof, we have a realm of good where the unicorns live happily without any personal conflict between each other, are ruled by a wise king and protected by a group of Super Sentai / Magical Girl-inspired good guys, whose leader has a fairy sidekick, defeats monsters with Sailor Moon-based moves and has to learn to believe in himself.
  • Fridge Logic: If Titan was seriously weaker during his exile, why didn't the Grand Ruler just destroy his prison and him with it after getting stronger over the centuries?
    • The name "Dakari-King" is a reference to Digimon (it's a Portmanteau Couple Name). If the author is a Digimon fan, where on Earth did all his hatred of friendship come from? Digimon is possibly the only series on the planet where The Power of Friendship is more powerful than it is in MLP!
  • God Mode Sue: The Grand Ruler.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The villain is a humanoid hate-driven sorcerer who does not believe in things like friendship, wants to destroy everyone who opposes him, calls himself the master of all darkness, and his main ability is to steal the powers of others. The author believes friendship and human interaction is worthless, calls himself the leader of a fandom, hates on everyone who doesn't praise his work, and steals inspiration and names from other works.
  • Hypocrite: The author big times. He spends most of his time bragging on how evil people are who bash the work of others (something related to him being the victim of several mocks over the years) and admited to have worked as a child entertainer who taught little kids about how important friendship and believing in yourself is. But then he created this fanfic to bash a show just because it rules on The Power of Friendship, admits to be glad when he makes fans of the show angry/sad with his work and abandoned the concept of believing in yourself entirely for the remake. Let`s not forget, he hates the original show with a passion, but watched it till the second season finale and actually ships his Mary Sue with Celestia, because he himself has a crush on her.
  • Mary Sue: The entire cast.
  • Mary Suetopia: The world of Unicornicopia.
  • Padding: The author outright admits to using this, as he believes he has to fill a word quota. More specifically, he believes that every chapter has to be an equivalent length to a half-hour TV episode, with no exceptions.
  • Painful Rhyme: Rhymey. There is a reason why he's the most hated character out of the lot.
  • The Scrappy: Rhymey, whom most of the readers detest with a passion. It doesn't help that he ends up paired with Fluttershy.
  • So Bad It's Good
  • Strangled by the Red String: Lightning and Starla, who fall in love immediately for no reason besides that the main character needs a love interest.
    • Rhymey and Fluttershy as well.
  • Sugar Bowl: Unicornicopia, with its population of winged unicorns and places named after colors.
  • Take That: Titan blowing up Equestria and the author turning the main cast into losers who can't do anything without the Unicornicopians' help may be one, taking the Revenge Fic nature of the story into account.
    • A more explicit example is given later on. In a flashback chapter, we see the Grand Ruler as a teenager being constantly bullied by a unicorn with the name Dusk Shine. Said character is based on someone who posted on fimchan and asked the author about various PlotHoles.
  • Wangst: The author, so very much. Apparently watching My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic is a painful experience for him, and the Ship Sinking at the Teen Titans finale is a PTSD-worthy traumatic experience.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: It may sound farfetched, but the relationship between Lightning and Grand Ruler could have been quite an interesting plot arc in the hands of a better writer.
    • The entire concept of another world of ponies having their own adventures and learning valuable lessons about the important things in life, while also fighting against a common enemy could have been made entertaining (it worked for My Little Pony with FiM) if the author would not depend so much on clichés.
