Lauryn Hill (1975-) is an American recording artist, musician, and actress. She started out acting in As the World Turns and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit in the early 90's. Early in her career, she established her reputation as a member of the The Fugees. In 1998, she launched her solo career with the release of the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The recording earned Hill five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist. Following the success of her debut album, Hill largely dropped out of public view, in part due to her displeasure with fame and the music industry. She does perform occasionally, and later released a live, acoustic double-album under the MTV Unplugged brand. She is one of the defining artists of the neo-soul genre.

Lauryn Hill provides examples of the following tropes:
  • Breakup Breakout: Averted, probably because of what happened after her solo album.
  • Creator Backlash: In her more recent concerts, she has decided that she didn't want to play the same thing over and over again and sped up the music and made it louder. The result was so bad that fans have actually walked out of concerts.
  • Hide Your Pregnancy: Her video for "Doo Wop {That Thing)" hid the fact that she was pregnant at the time.
  • Magnum Opus/First Installment Wins: Her first album Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is considered her best, and most people don't even know she released another.
  • Reclusive Artist: Very much so. After the success of her solo album, she couldn't handle the pressure of being in the public eye and in 2000, stepped away from public view. Pretty much the only thing most people know about her life now is that she has a lot of kids.
  • Showmance: She and Wyclef Jean briefly dated when they were in the Fugees.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: The Fugees consisted of her, Wyclef Jean, and Pras Michael.
  • Urban Legend: The infamous and untrue rumor that she said she would rather let her kids starve than let a white person buy her music.
