Jewelpet (ジュエルペット Juerupetto) is a magical girl anime series based on the franchise jointly created by Sanrio and Sega. The series was produced by Studio Comet and aired from April 5, 2009 to March 26, 2010 on TV Osaka and TV Tokyo, replacing Onegai My Melody Kirara in its initial timeslot. The series also recently aired in Taiwan on YOYO TV, premiered as part the Boing programming block on the Telecinco television network in Spain in April 2010, aired in France via Teletoon France, also aired on Cartoon Network in the Philippines and aired on Canal Panda in Portugal in January 2011. It was also aired in Italy in February 2011 on Italia 1 and Hiro and it had reruns on Boing.

A second series titled Jewelpet Twinkle☆ (ジュエルペット てぃんくる☆ Juerupetto Tinkuru☆) premiered later on TV Tokyo from April 3, 2010 to March 26, 2011 with 52 Episodes. The second series premiered later in Spain as part of the Boing programming block. A third series titled Jewelpet Sunshine (ジュエルペット サンシャイン Juerupetto Sanshain) premiered in April 9, 2011. A fourth series titled Jewelpet Kira☆Deco—! (ジュエルペット きら☆デコッ！ Juerupetto Kira☆deko—!) has been announced, and is slated to air on April 7, 2012.

A full-length feature film titled Jewelpet the Movie: Sweets Dance Princess (映画ジュエルペット スウィーツダンスプリンセス Eiga Juerupetto: Suuītsu Dansu Purinsesu) is currently in production. The movie, which is being directed by Hiroaki Sakurai (Director of Daa! Daa! Daa! and Cromartie High School) and distributed by Toho, is slated for an August 11, 2012 theatrical release.

Story Arcs

The anime series consists of four story arcs, the Rinko arc (Jewelpet), the Akari arc (Jewelpet Twinkle☆), the Kanon arc (Jewelpet Sunshine) and the Pink arc (Jewelpet Kira☆Deco—!). All story arcs focus on two human characters as well as the main Jewelpet mascot, Ruby. The stories on all story arcs are completely different but sometimes makes certain references from each season. Storyline wise, each arc has its own theme.

The current arc is the Pink arc, focusing on the main heroine, Pink Oomiya.

Rinko arc (Jewelpet)

The first arc of the series, called the Rinko Arc focuses on the main heroine Rinko Kougyoku and the series is set in the fictional Takaragaseki City, a setting modeled after two famous cities in Japan, Tokyo and Osaka. The series' theme is Romance, referencing to Rinko's dream on finding the perfect someone to love her with Ruby's help and mishaps.

Akari arc (Jewelpet Twinkle☆)

The second arc of the series which focuses on the main heroine named Akari Sakura. The series is set majorly in both Jewel Land and in the human world, more specifically Akari's hometown in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The series' main theme is Dreams, a reference to Akari's dreams of winning the Jewel Star Grand Prix and making her wishes come true with the help of Ruby and Labra.

Kanon arc (Jewelpet Sunshine)

The third arc of the series which focuses on the main heroines Kanon Mizushirou and Ruby. The story focuses on the Plum Section's hilarious adventures and tests in Jewel Land's Sunshine Academy while discovering themselves and stopping the dreaded Dark Jewel Magic. The series is set majorly in Jewel Land. The series's main theme is Achievement, which focuses on Ruby and her classmates aim to graduate and follow their dreams.

Pink arc (Jewelpet Kira☆Deco—!)

The fourth story arc of the series, which focuses on the new main heroine Pink Oomiya. The whole series is a complete departure to the previous three series, which now involves a Super Sentai-like team called "Kiradeko 5". Alongside Pink, they were partnered with their Jewelpet Partners on their search for the legendary Deco Stone and save the human world from Eternal Darkness.

Tropes used in Jewelpet include:
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Each Jewelpet wears accessories, even the boys
  • Action Girl: This would be both Minami and Shouko.
  • Aloof Big Brother: Mikage
  • And Now for Something Completely Different: Sunshine totally ditched the magical Girl concept of the series and goes to a more Galaxy Angel like hillariousness, on which it reflects the main Human Characters.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: Kanon in Sunshine, who bears a strange birthmark seen in Episode 46. This was averted as the true one is Jewelina Herself.
  • Art Evolution: In each series, it evolves from the Onegai My Melody style, to the more Galaxy Angel like style.
  • Aw, Look -- They Really Do Love Each Other: Kanon and Mikage, before they both found out they're twins all along.
  • Be the Ball: Brownie.
  • Brother-Sister Incest: Yes..Sunshine applies this trope but in a more touchy and dramatic side. In Episode 41, Kanon found the photo of him and Mikage as kids, and she was shocked by it. It was in Episode 45 when she and Mikage found out that are unknowingly Twin Siblings all along. Episode 46 sheds more light to the subject: Both of them were separated during birth because Kanon has a spiral birthmark that could link to a future disaster and forced to live with the Mizushirou Family. After a few dramatic scenes, she then breaks off her love relationship with Mikage and accepts him again as his older twin sibling, in which both families agree.
  • Beach Episode: There's actually a lot of them in all 3 series.
  • Betty and Veronica: In Sunshine, Ruby is the Betty while Kanon is the Veronica.
  • Big Bad: Dian in the First Series, Alma and the Batest in the Second Series and the Dark Jewel Magic in the Third.
  • Butt Monkey: Both Tatewaki and Masago counts as this sometimes.
  • Christmas Episode: Again, all 3 series has their Christmas Episodes
  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: Miria of Twinkle is guilty of this
  • Cry Cute: Kanon, at times. Even at Ruby's death.
  • Cute Witch: Do I need to explain this?
  • Dangerously Genre Savvy: Sunshine's Genres varies within each episode.
  • Dark Is Evil
  • Dark Magical Girl: Diana, Dian and Alma
  • Demonic Possession: Dark Dian in Episode 51 of the Original series. Because he became obsessed with dark magic, it took over him, imprisoning his good self and became demonic and evil. His intentions is to destroy Jewel Land and take over the Earth, while eradicating every human being in the world, out of belief that the world is filled with nothing but lies, and plunge the world into eternal despair and darkness.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Ruby in the second to the last episode. Kanon, of all people, cries in this. She got better in the last episode.
  • Dynamic Entry: Each Jewelpet in the first series has their own Dynamic Entry poses. This also applies to the Phantom Herb Thieves and lastly to Miria of Twinkle.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The first series's final episode had Diana and Dian now being happy with their new human partner while they babysit a baby.
    • Sunshine also has this in the final episode, it was a downer at first, and then became a serious but romantic Tear Jerker between a former human turned into a Jewelpet and Ruby. Ruby met a Jewelpet named Granite, who somewhat had the same voice as Mikage until she found out it was him all along. She broke down and rush to him in tears, calling a jerk on why he didn't appear in the last 5 years until he forgives her. She accepts and is now happy that she's with him, after all these years.
  • Everything's Better with Rainbows: All 3 series has a lot of rainbows.
  • Fan Service: Episode 20 of the Original series had Minami wear a Sexy Bikini.
    • Also, the covers for the DVD box sets of Jewelpet Sunshine spells serious Fanservice itself!
  • Fantastic Racism: This is the reason Kanon gets into arguments with Ruby.
  • Five-Man Band: The SGB Squad in Episode 43 of Sunshine.
  • Friendly Rival: Marianne of Twinkle.
  • Fun Size: The Jewelpets.
  • Furry Confusion: Only the Second (Tametorin, Toristein, Jolly and Merry) and Third Story Arcs (Waniyama) applies this trope.
  • Genki Girl: Minami of the original series and Miria of Twinkle
  • Getting Crap Past the Radar: For a Sanrio Anime, all 3 series broke a LOT of innocence than Onegai My Melody ever did.
    • Episode 19 of Jewelpet had Garnet wearing a shiny bikini and Peridot is in a sexy pose during a beach scene. Episode 20 is much more extreme when Garnet herself used her magic and instantly changed Minami's clothing into a Sexy Bikini.
    • Episode 6 of Twinkle features Jolly and Mary, two poodles dressed in Playboy Bunny costumes. It gets out of hand since Moldavite likes them both. JEEZ OLD MAN ACT YOUR AGE!!
    • Episode 41 of Sunshine totally broke a LOT OF innocence to the whole series. As in Luna herself is been held by dark magical tentacles!
  • Hime Cut: Kanon
  • Idiot Ball: Kanon and probably, Ruby.
  • Fundamentally Female Cast: There is only 1 major male character throughout the whole series and he is a little more Dark Magic Boy than most girls should like.
  • Interspecies Romance: Ruby and Mikage and Garnet and Masago. The former is been averted in the last episode.
  • Japanese Pronouns
  • Jerkass: Kanon, oh so much. But also she displays a bit of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Kawaiiko: Again, the Jewelpets
  • Magical Girl: Part of the series can be seen as this...

  • Merchandise-Driven: Truthfully this series is driven by the toys more than anything else, there similar to Webkinz.
  • Missing Mom: Well we don't usually see who's Minami's mother is in the original series.
  • Mon: Not exactly a true fighting monster genre but it has the Lilo & Stitch: The Series feel with the magical pets being collected or found.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Alma never knew that absorbing the Batest and unleashing it during the Jewel Star Grand Prix Finals would mean the end of Jewel Land Forever.
  • No Export for You: The anime and the toys were not released in the states due to similarity issues with Webkinz and both Sanrio and Sega may get sued for it. But the good thing its released elsewhere around the world.
  • One-Winged Angel Dark Dian in the original series wants to Destroy Jewel Land and Rule the world due to his despise to Humans. Alma in Twinkle does this also because she wanted her mother to come back from the dead.

  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Averted in the first series, when Akira admits his feelings to Rinko.
  • Shipper on Deck: We have Rinko x Akira in the first series, Akari x Yuuma in the second and Ruby x Mikage x Kanon in the third.
  • Shout-Out: All 3 series has a lot of shout-outs to previous Sanrio characters.

  • The Rival: The Magical Angels of Twinkle.
  • Theme Naming: Every pet is named after a type of gemstone, most of the audience will get it after seeing Ruby, Garnet, Nix, and Lapiz for examples.
  • Tomboy: Shouko and Minami

  • The Unintelligible: Nejikawa of Sunshine. Despite he's a dumb robot, he is very reliable.

  • We Want Our Jerk Back: Jasper gets this feeling when Kanon is forced to act nice to Ruby in one episode.
  • X Meets Y: Really this is like Wedding Peach meets Pretty Cure meets Pokémon with a dash of girly goodness.
