Hazbin Hotel/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

These things about Hazbin Hotel are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Alastor's true intentions remain a mystery up to the season finale. He openly told Charlie in the pilot that he was helping her because her project amused him, and expected the hotel to fail. To make matters worse, Alastor was also a serial killer and cannibal in life, and trapped in a deal. Yet, he has many Pet the Dog moments like sparing the Egg Boiz after they successfully obtain information about the dead angel, and gets visibly jealous when Lucifer shows up to reconcile with Charlie. In the finale, he freaks out when realizing that Adam nearly had him dead to rights, and when he sings that if he disappears, he'll be known as the altruist that gave his life for his friends. Does the idea of being seen as a good guy horrify Alastor, or is it the realization that he truly does care for the Hazbin crew despite his ulterior motives?
    • There are hints that Adam is such a douchebag is that he knows that no one really loves him, except for Lute, and he spent a mortal life in pain and suffering thanks to Lucifer giving him free will, which got him banished from Paradise. Lucifer, to rub salt in that wound, says that he banged both Lilith and Eve while delivering a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. The finale hints the other direction, that being in Heaven for millennia has stripped him of his humanity, to the point where he doesn't see the sinners as his descendants when he mocks Charlie for calling them her "family".
  • Catharsis Factor: After Adam has been a murderous douchebag, for the whole first season, complete with him going after Charlie and the Hazbin Hotel out of pure spite and entitlement, many viewers cheered when Lucifer shows up and thrashes him. Calling it a "fight" would be an exaggeration: Lucifer curbstomps Adam when he gets serious, leaving him a bloody mess in a crater.
  • Complete Monster:
    • Take a character from a movie like Animal House and give him godlike divine powers and you have a pretty good idea about Adam's personality. A narcissist and Entitled Bastard who believes he's superior to everyone, he blatantly admits that the stated purpose of the annual purges is a ruse, and that he only does it out of his sick idea of fun and entertainment. He considers all the residents of Hell to be vermin, believing all mortal life should be subservient to him alone, and when Charlie has the nerve to simply question his actions, he decides to increase the quota to twice a year just to spite her. With no morality to speak of, it's a mystery how this jerk even got to heaven in the first place - it is implied that even he doesn't know - and when finally killed in the season 1 finale, he does so completely unrepentant still cursing Charlie and her allies for daring to oppose him.
    • However, there is one character who, after some analysis, is even worse than Adam though less relevant to the plot: Valentino. While Adam is a complete asshole, his actions are at least adjacent to Sera's stated goal of population control and preventing an infernal rebellion. Valentino, on the other hand, leaves no question that he is crimes are done simply out of his own debauchery and enjoyment. An abusive lunatic ("abuse" meaning phsyical, emotional, and sexual) who is in the business of enslaving souls of vulnerable people to force them to perform in porn movies, he is a hedonistic pervert in every way. Ironically he seems to embody the negative side of humanity's lustful natures even more than Asmodeus himself (from the sister series) who is the living embodiment of Lust.
  • Crossover Ship: One surprisingly popular ship originated on 4chan of all places: Charlie x Doomguy. Despite Doomguy's burning hatred for demons, fans like to imagine him falling for Charlie due to her being a total sweetheart who can bring out his more caring side.
  • Crossing the Line Twice: Given the setting, a lot of the humor depends on this.
  • Dry-Docking: As soon as Lucifer was revealed to be not only divorced but turned out to be an Adorkable Bumbling Dad, many took the chance to claim for themselves and/or their OCs.
  • Evil Is Sexy:
    • Alastor, with plenty of people saying his scary actions in the series being what makes him so sexy. Interestingly, this is despite him being Asexual.
    • Lute and Adam. Interestingly, this was the case for the latter even before it was revealed the exorcists' appearances were simply masks and his actual human face was revealed in the season finale. Not that said reveal helped Adam in regards to this trope.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Charlie/Alastor (or Charlastor) is more popular than the canon Charlie/Vaggie (or Chaggie) ship, as a lot of fans like Charlie and Alastor's chemistry.
  • Fridge Sorrow: One thing many fans have pointed out is that even in a best case scenario where Charlie's hotel is succeeds, it would likely mean Charlie would lose Vaggie - forever.
  • Friendly Fandoms: There's a surprising amount of overlap between fans of Hazbin Hotel and Sleepycabin/Oneyplays, likely due to Sleepycabin mainstays like Joshua Tomar, Mick Lauer, and Stamper all having roles in the show.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Angel Dust being jealous of Sir Pentious doing well as a guest at the hotel hits harder when you see him mourning Sir Pentious. He gives a little "fuck, you did good buddy" while collapsing.
    • Charlie in "Scrambled Eggs" tells Vaggie she trusts everyone wholeheartedly, including her. "Hello Rosie" opens with Charlie struggling with the revelation that Vaggie is a Fallen Angel and never told her, questioning why her girlfriend hid such a big secret.
  • Hate Dumb:
    • The show's detractors like to criticize the actions of the characters, such as cussing, violence, drug use, and the like, to try and convince everyone else that the show is bad. But what they don't realize is that that's the point. The show takes place in Hell, so most of the characters are bad people who do bad things. You're not supposed to admire them or see them as role models, Hell is full of evil people. Doesn't mean they can't be entertaining, though. Alastor even lampshades this in the season 1 pilot:

Alastor: Hello wayward sinners. Do you love blood, violence, and depravity of a sexual nature? Of course you do! That's why you're in Hell!

  • Another common complaint is the character design, that everyone in the show looks too similar and that there's "too much red" - never considering that this started as an indy web animation with a limited budget. Not to mention that fan art has been made by the thousands with most pretty loyal to the show's style.
  • I Knew It!:
    • Vaggie being a former Exorcist had been a popular fan theory long before the official reveal. In fact, Carmilla's comment to Vaggie that "it's not rocket science" may have been a subtle dig at doubters.
    • Sir Pentious and Cherri Bomb had been a Fan-Preferred Couple long before "Welcome to Heaven" where he actually started showing interest in her; his Dying Declaration of Love in "The Show Must Go On" was a confirmation.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Angel Dust may be rude, but as the Addict music video shows, Angel is not as happy as he seems due to Valentino being sexually abusive towards him.
  • Moral Event Horizon: While Charlie believes that no one is beyond redemption, there are some beings that challenge that view for her:
    • While Adam was already a piece of work by saying that he and the Exorcists kill sinners for fun, he crosses it in the season finale by attacking the hotel to start his wave of genocide, purely because Charlie had the nerve to pitch the project in Heaven to Sera and exposed the Exterminations to all the angels. Note that the hotel is filled with sinners that are visibly trying to improve and are under the princess's protection. Then he attacks Charlie for avenging Sir Pentious and protecting her friends, visibly gloating about how much fun her death will be. Only thanks to that decision, Lucifer has license to attack Adam with prejudice because attacking a hellborn means Adam lost his divine immunity.
    • Lute is only slightly better than Adam, and certainly, assaulting and mutilating one of her own subordinates (as she did to Vaggie) for showing mercy to a child pushes her into the categotry of irredeemably evil.
  • Offending the Creator's Own: Vaggie being a Latina with anger issues has led to Hazbin's haters calling her a racist stereotype and accusing Vivziepop of being a bigot... despite being Latina herself.
  • One-Scene Wonder:
    • "Lambchop" (as she's often called), the female lamb-demon Alastor rescues in the prequel comic. No lines, only appears for little more than a page, and he only talks to her in one panel, but fanfics often show her as his girlfriend or paramour.
    • Susan, the rude woman who heckles and mocks Charlie as she tries to make her pitch to Cannibal Town. The scene was hillarious.
  • Squick: While most of the show is NSFW, it has some moments that are truly creepy:
    • Charlie, for all intents and purposes, is Adam's stepdaughter since she's the daughter of his "ex-wife" Lilith. Yet he acts like a creep towards her every time they interact, and takes visible pleasure in trolling her and hitting on her in his first appearance. It's no wonder Lucifer beats the tar out of Adam in the finale when he gets the first opportunity.
    • In-universe, Charlie and Vaggie are not comfortable when Angel suggests using a BDSM dungeon for trust exercises. And everyone quits when Niffty shows up in a dominatrix outfit, because she may be an adult but has a childlike body. They also find Angel's movies disgusting.
  • Tear Jerker: The Addict music video gives us a view of Angel's Dark and Troubled Past, with flashbacks showing Valentino sexually abusing him, as well as Angel breaking down with Cherri trying to comfort him.
  • What Do You Mean It's Not for Kids?: The animation and characters look cute but there is plenty of mature content, strong language, and dark themes that don't even belong to a kids' cartoon. In fact, a number of children unironically like the show.
  • What Do You Mean It's Not Political? Inverted; it most certainly is. VivziePop has outright stated that the LGBT references are meant to be a statement in favor of LGBT rights, going so far as to Tweet a picture of Charlie and Vaggie with a gay pride flag.
