• Ensemble Darkhorse: Vanessa Bender, Joe's second girlfriend in the Casefiles who despite not having appeared in the books since that series' cancellation over ten years ago still makes regular appearences in fanfic.
• Values Dissonance: The original editions, published before 1959 which featured plenty of stereotypes, particularly of different nationalities, and racist attitudes towards African-Americans. The post-1959 revised editions took them out.
  • 1966 story The Mystery of the Spiral Bridge, though, had a scene in which one of the brothers, undercover, casually used the ethnic slur "squarehead" to refer to a supposedly Scandinavian-descended character (actually one of their friends from Bayport, also undercover).
