Character Filibuster/Playing With
Basic Trope: Alice goes off on a long but in-character rant.
- Straight: Alice begins ranting about how something is bad, and even though what she says is off the top of her head it's as thought out as if she prepared it in advance.
- Exaggerated: The entire book/episode/movie/etc is comprised of nothing but Alice's continuous speech.
- Justified:
- Alice is holding for time, or is trying to distract someone.
- Alice is giving a speech and forgot her papers.
- Inverted: Alice makes a quick disorganized statement about something.
- Subverted:
- Alice starts her rant, but only says a couple of short sentences before concluding her speech.
- Another character gets impatient and ends the speech early with a punch.
- Double Subverted: Alice turns to leave but then immediately turns around and launches into a giant speech about the subject.
- Parodied: Alice gives an exaggerated nonsensical speech seemingly about nothing at all.
- The Big Bad fast-forwards through the speech.
- Deconstructed: Alice frequently launches into giant speeches in everyday situations until finally people stop talking to her.
- Reconstructed: Alice gives a compelling speech, convincing everyone to stop fighting, saving the day.
- Zig Zagged: Alice flip flops between giving speeches and remaining silent, and when she gives speeches she'll stop and star numerous time, often in a disjointed manner.
- Averted: Even though Alice strongly disagrees with something, and has plenty of good reasons against it, she nevertheless remains silent.
- Enforced: "OK, the execs say we need to bulk this movie out. How about a dirty great speech?"
- Lampshaded:
- "Now I'd just like to take a moment to ask everyone to use the bathroom if they have to because once I really get started this speech will reach Atlas Shrugged levels of length."
- "Great, he is starting to talk. Does anyone have a deck of card?"
- Invoked: "I should really give a speech right now to show everyone how bad this is."
- Defied: Alice realizes mid-speech that her speech is going on too long so she quickly wraps it up.
- Discussed: "People always seem to be busting into long filibusters these days."
- Conversed: "In these shows people are always giving unrealistic speeches that go on forever."
- Played For Laughs: Alice is a Large Ham and everyone knows it, so no one listens to her long-winded speeches. These are treated as Funny Background Events if they're shown at all.
Back to Character Filibuster, which is often confused for an Author Filibuster, but is nonetheless distinct in that while an Author Filibuster involves an author stopping the action and perhaps making their characters act out of character to make a point, the Character Filibuster is still in character for the characters in question...(Twelves hours later)...and that's the reason you should never snort pie filling.
