These are recommendations made by Tropers for Batman fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

  • Arguably the precursor to the infamously excellent Joker Blogs, predating them by nearly two years, which features an interview with the Joker that reviews much of his and Batman's personal history, the terrifying influence he has on others, and the best use of Jim Carrey's cover of "I Am the Walrus" and Nat King Cole's "Smile" in any medium. Take note that this Joker is a tad different from Heath Ledger's anarchist version. Rather he is obsessed with theatrics and the chemistry between he and Batman, much more akin to Mark Hamill's version. He's still frightening to watch and the depictions of his attacks on Jason Todd and Barbara Gordon are highly violent and unforgiving.

The CATverse by Twinings and Bite Me Techie

  • A large series centering on the villains of Gotham City—the Scarecrow and his three unwelcome hangers on, specifically. Has nothing to do with Cat Tales.
  • I thought it was going to be a series of Sues. I'm glad that I was proven wrong. And the writing itself is great, seriously.

Cat Tales by Chris Dee

  • This 'verse comprises (as of November 2008) of 56 individual stories of several chapters each. This Catwoman-centric series manages to be Original Flavour while tossing so much of the recent reimaginings of Catwoman into the trash. Wonderfully funny and deeply dramatic by turns, skillfully and entertainingly written, it is worth the time to read. (Which you must do from the very beginning, or you'll have no idea what's going on or why in the later stories.)
    • Actually, this troper started towards the end and had little trouble understanding the plot. It made more sense after going back, but was hardly indecipherable or any less awesome.
      • It's mixed. This troper also started at what-was-then the end. Some of the stories are very referential to earlier parts of the series, while others stand fine alone. There are several distinct story arcs.


Elseworlds: Bruce Has A Problem initial oneshot written by Adrian Tullberg, and then with permission from above a loosely-moderated Round Robin collaboratively written onward by Andrew J Talon, Scriviner, and a handful of other authors from the Spacebattles.com forum

  • Synopsis: Harley Quinn discovers the identity of the man behind the cowl...then decides to shack up with him. Hilarity Ensues
  • Having been creatively inspired by this oneshot, a group of fanfic authors from the Spacebattles.com forum began writing a series of connected snippets that continued Bruce and Harley's budding relationship, and the repercussions/effects of such a relationship. The majority of the snippets share a similar Slice of Life / Rom Com tone to that of Cat Tales, as well as borrowing some minor naming/story conventions, but other then that the rest is solid, hilarious Original Flavor

The Batman Complex, by themanbatman

  • A series of very well-done fanmade trailers for a psychological thriller where Bruce Wayne's life as Batman turns out to have been delusions resulting from paranoid schizophrenia. Using elements from the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, American Psycho, and others, themanbatman creates a very convincing set of trailers. The third trailer also features one of the best uses of Peter Gabriel's My Body is a Cage this troper has ever seen.

  • Where to begin? there's The Changling which is an alternate of Jason's resurrection that involves him fighting his way home and dragging Damian a Ghul with him, there's what I can only call the Jason Redemption Series: The Choice of Family, Antidote for the Poison, Separation Anxiety, In Father's Honor, Mother's Day, and Old Friends, New Beginnings. For everyone who wanted Jason to wise up and get a happy life, these are it. They show all of the Robins as (occasionally reluctant) brothers who do care about each other.

Batman Revealed by vballmania23 [Set in an AU Dark Knight Trilogy continuity]

  • Synopsis: Bruce Wayne turns himself in at Harvey Dent's meeting and strange events begin to follow...
  • Comments: A truly excellent fanfiction. The characterization is spot-on and the author manages to capture the events that happen in every single way possible, telling it from the point of view of major characters such as Harvey Dent, James Gordon to even the most minor ones, such as the volunteering lunchlady at the prison.

Impromptu Affair by Greyliliy [Set in the Dark Knight Trilogy continuity]

  • Synopsis: One night in a Gotham alley, Scarecrow find himself an unwitting partner of the Joker. Hilarity Ensues, especially when Two-Face shows up as well.
  • Comments: This is quite a good fic, mostly consisting of The Odd Couple-esque dialogue peppered with black humor and the occasional action sequence. Oh, and It seems that Harley's going to be joining the party soon. While you're at it, check out her other piece of Bat-fanfiction, Burlap (a Scarecrow origin story), as well.

The Pajama Game by A Clever Name [Set in the Dark Knight Trilogy continuity]

  • Synopsis: A dark one-shot exploring the background and mentality of Jonathan Crane, where even something as innocuous as pajamas can become horrifyingly traumatic.
  • Comments: This is not a humor story. REALLY. It is, however, beautifully written and disconcertingly tragic. Contains brief language. Does not contain clichés. Cold Shower and Homecoming (the latter under A Clever Name 2) are two similarly excellent one-shots by the same author.

Not Playing With a Full Deck by 4ofCups [Set in the Dark Knight Trilogy continuity]

  • Synopsis: Feeling that he's been insulted by a news broadcast, the Joker kidnaps Lois Lane to exact revenge. Meanwhile, his men cause chaos across the city as Batman tries to track him down.
  • Comments: Not for the faint of heart, as it contains torture, language, and violence. However, the plotlines are genius and the writing fantastic. Her other work, The Joker's Prayer, is also wonderful.

Can't Get You Out Of My Head By J-Horror Girl [Minor AU, Set in the Dark Knight Trilogy continuity]

  • Synopsis: The Joker has an involuntary associate in the form of a ghostly woman. He can't touch her, she can't walk away from him. They're just going to have to make the best of it, aren't they.
  • Comments: Good characterization from the Joker and our mystery woman, and they play off each other wonderfully. We also get such a nice look into how the Joker thinks. Meanwhile we also have an intriguing B-plot with Batman and Alfred. If fantastic elements bother you than this probably isn't your story, though up through chapter nineteen I haven't seen anything besides our ghost. This story has 81 chapters and 1321 reviews.

Duality [dead link] By Seriousfic [[[Dark Knight Trilogy]]/Superman Returns crossover]

  • Synopsis: A series of events proves more than either the Dark Knight or Man of Steel can handle alone.
  • Comments: Not only does this series pay full respect to both canons, it's filled to the brim with Continuity Nods that border on Fan Service. Not that I'm complaining at all.
    • A quick note: the fic was started (just) prior to The Dark Knight‍'‍s release, and so ignores series continuity after Begins. Since this means the Joker comes across as even parts Nicholson and Hamill I'm happy, but a heads up ahead of time helps avoid confusion.

Fear And Malice By E. S. Young [Set in the Dark Knight Trilogy continuity]

  • Synopsis: Harleen Quinzel, starting work at Arkham before Batman Begins, is eager to study insanity for its own sake. Jonathan Crane, meanwhile, conducts experiments while sneering down at his new co-worker. A brilliant story about their pasts, their presents, and the friendship forming between them.
  • Comments: Stylistically impressive and well thought out, with detailed interpretations of all characters (including asylum staff and future rogues). This fits perfectly into Nolanverse while regularly paying homage to both comics and the animated series.

  • Synopsis: The Joker takes on an advice column. Hilarity and horror in equal amounts ensue.
  • Comments: I'm not so sure whether I should be cowering in fear or laughing my head off. It's extremely well written, and it's the Joker, so expect... um... well, it's the Joker. So Yeah.

Makeup and Purple Suits written by yesimahuman. [Set in the Dark Knight Trilogy]

  • Synopsis: (From FF.net) "The Joker evolved by putting on different costumes. He added brighter, flashier items to his existing ones, until he was forced to smile for all eternity."
  • Comments: I used the ff.net synopsis because I just couldn't think of one my own. It's kinda Mind Screwy, but it's a well written Joker story.

The Doctors and the Nurses They Adore Me So By Lauralot [Set in the Dark Knight Trilogy continuity]

  • Synopsis: Joker is brought to Arkham Asylum following his capture in The Dark Knight. Superficially the institution is boring but fairly standard for a mental hospital. Corruption has yet to remove its stain from certain staff members, however—leaving patients like Jonathan Crane considerably worse for the wear.
  • Comments: Gut-wrenching, hilarious, and gruesome in turn; this fic manages to be simultaneously realistic, in-character, and original. Adjectives aside, you seriously don't want to miss this one. It's incredible.

Strange Behavior, by Rick Peterson

  • Synopsis: A different version of the "Murderer/Fugitive" arc, written during 2002 while the comics were still being published, containing the author's best guess at the perpetrator. Now technically AU due to the canon story having ended another way, but...
  • Comments: ... I actually find this version slightly more plausible (not that the canon version wasn't good, admitted). The explanation given for why the proposed scenario involving Hugo Strange would fit every known detail of Vesper Fairchild's murder as of the time of publication is airtight, and the psychological drama is well-written. Also, for Birds of Prey fans, Oracle is the viewpoint character, and it guest-stars Black Canary.

Necessary Force by paxwolf

  • Synopsis: When a powerful terrorist threatens the safety of the planet, the Justice League must go to extremes to stop him, and Superman and Batman may have to make the biggest sacrifice of all.
  • Comments: The story and depth of the all the characters involved was just amazing. I really loved Superman and Batman's defining relationship here and the descriptions and imagery was so powerful. Featuring Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Oracle, J'onn, Green Lanturn and others from the Justice League.

Broken Glass by Panamint

  • Synopsis: Dick Grayson has always been a perfectionist. But what happens when perfectionism goes too far?
  • Comments: Very gripping scenario that could happen in the comic book universe. It covers the eating disorders and how hard it can be to overcome them. Everyone is in character but it focuses on their relationships on Dick. Featuring Robin (Dick Grayson), Batman, Teen Titans and others from the Batman Universe.

Impossible Worlds by messageredacted

  • Synopsis: There are many ways in to Arkham Asylum; getting out is harder.
  • Pairings: Batman/Joker
  • Comments: There are many "Batman in Arkham" fics in the freeweb. This one just pretends it's one. The set up is typical but comes to a very surprising and well working end. Also, I'm putting this into general, because a) the pairing consists of two kisses which are plot relevant and near the end b) the typical shipping fic focus on the relationship building doesn't exist, it concentrates on the plot development. Seriously, it's worth the time even if you don't like slash. This is just a Gen fic that has slash which makes sense in context.

The Land of Nod by vertigeaux [Set in the Dark Knight Trilogy continuity]

  • Synopsis: A series of vignettes examining Batman, the rogues' gallery, and how they all fit together.
  • Pairings: Joker/Harley, unrequited Riddler/Harley, Batman/Catwoman
  • Comments: Twisted, tragic, funny, and poetic. The imagery is stunning throughout and the characterization spot-on. Although like myrdschaem I've listed pairings, this piece is very decidedly focused on character exploration rather than shipping.

Knock, Knock by Night Monkey

  • Synopsis (from FF.net): Jehovah's Witnesses are spreading the word of God all over Gotham. What happens when they knock on all the wrong doors?
  • Comments: Very funny. While the author clearly doesn't know all that much about the beliefs of Jehova's witnesses in much detail, he also doesn't have them do or say anything offensive and has them keep to the straight and narrow rather well. A comedy through and through about two very, very, very, very unfortunate Gotham residents, with the big names not appearing for very long.

Gotham Intelligence by Solauren

  • Synopsis: Batman's actions in The Dark Knight are having greater consequences than he thought. The organization Quantum has started making overtures towards both Wayne Enterprises and the Gotham Underworld, and recent events have convinced a number of intelligence agencies, namely the CIA and MI-6, that Batman may be working with them to those ends. And none other than Special Agent James Bond is coming to Gotham to find the truth.

Crisis of Infinite Batgirls by bookwormwithanattitude.

Last Straw by WTF Wonder

  • Synopsis: People no longer take the Scarecrow seriously, so Dr. Crane decides the time has come to address a few misconceptions.
  • Comments: This fic manages to examine a lot of fandom derailment tendencies (Draco in Leather Pants, Uke, Freudian Excuse, Mary Sue pairings, and so forth) in a believable story with Gotham City...and corrects them via one very, very displeased super villain. Manages to be genuinely chilling and is 100% in-character. Even better that it uses Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow, who is often taken lightly by fans based upon his looks and employment under Ra's Al Ghul. Excellently written, already seems to be becoming a reference point for good Scarecrow representation.

Cassandra Cain, the Batgirl by Dan Ingram

  • Synopsis: When confronting her mother, Batgirl is told that she is, has always been, and will always be a weapon, not a person. Upon returning to Gotham, Batman and Oracle help her start on the path to proving Shiva wrong.

A Gotham Christmas Carol by Bradp521

  • Synopsis: A "What If" spin on the Dickens classic as Bruce Wayne is visited in the wake of War Games
  • Comments: This is an interesting take on the Christmas Carol and it showed how Batman could reunite his family and understand that he can't fight alone. The character interaction is great and heartwarming. I deeply recommend this.

Brazilian Batman by Goldfield

  • Synopsis: It is Batman IN BRAZIL
  • Comments: Much better than it sounds, the author blends perfectly Batman with the Brazilian culture, transporting the motifs and themes of the Black Knight to Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately it is only in Portuguese. The author has also written Brazilian Superman, but it is much more cynical.

The Survivor by Gladrial

  • Synopsis: The story of Harley Quinn's earliest days in the criminal underworld, from the POV of one of Gotham's longest-lived career henchmen. You don't last long in the business without knowing the ropes and etiquette...unfortunately, no one bothers to inform Harley. So White takes it upon himself. (Also contains Joker/Harley, but it isn't the focus.)
  • Comments: Peppered with well-written original characters, funny lines, and various comic tidbits. A year in the making, but long enough without dragging on. Written by someone who obviously knows the DC universe very well and feels confident enough to use what they please from the nineties animated adaption. A very balanced Joker characterization and a Harley that is immersed in her insanity, but not so much that she's made into an idiot. White feels very real and his unusual friendship with his employer's girlfriend progresses naturally, not feeling forced. I can't recommend it enough.

The Changeling by Silver Spider

  • Synopsis: Jason is awake and aware but half-a-world away from Gotham in enemy hands. He thinks of nothing but escape, but what happens when he meets a certain little boy? Partial AU. Starts of at Red Hood: Lost Days #1 then spins in its own direction.
  • Comments: A Jason and Damian centered fic, follows Jason's attempts to return to Gotham with his "little brother" in tow. Wonderfully written, keeps you right on the edge of your seat. Very much a family-oriented story. The author also has several other great Batfamily stories which you should check out.

Clockwork, by HoistTheColours

  • Synopsis: Set several months after the events of The Dark Knight: the Joker has escaped from Arkham Asylum and is searching for a new place to plot his next attack on Gotham. Upon stumbling into an abandoned apartment however, he encounters a little girl.
  • Comments:A truly excellent fan-fiction that goes beyond any kind of exception from any reader. With it's original story-plot, evocative descriptions, and well-written mannerism of the characters (both canon and original), Clockwork is nothing short but a intriguing piece of literature that evolves a simple discovery of a little girl into a dangerous game of cat and mouse between the Clown Prince of Crime and a new villain rising up from the underground of Gotham City. Complete.

  • Synopsis: A streetwalker learns where fear and strength meet - in the shadow of the Bat. A Gotham Noir story.
  • Comments: Batman and prostitutes. Not the way you think.

Fall to Grace , by E Kelly

  • Synopsis: A young Batman faces a powerful corrupt Senator, a deadly assassin and a mysterious woman with a past as painful as his own. Slight AU from B Begins but very similar style. A Gotham Noir story.
  • Comments: Batman goes after the politicians. The politicians go after Batman. The OC is well written and engaging. The scene with Barbara made me cry.


Batman: Nemesis Fight, by Peter Chimaera

  • Recommended by: whoever created the TVTropes page for the fanfic before the TVT/ATT fork
  • Synopsis: A Troll Fic. The central conflict of the story comes from The Joker discovering Batman's secret idenity. He and his goons attack Wayne Manor, with terrible results. The second half of the story focuses on the treacherous love/hate relationship between Batman and Catwoman, and the moral dilemmas Batman and Robin face in their vigilante work.


The Darker Knight, by "Cafe Hoax Zest" (revealed at the end to be an anagram of Zacoftheaxes, his common online username)

  • Recommended by: whoever created the TVTropes page for the fanfic before the TVT/ATT fork
  • Synopsis: The Darker Knight is a self-admitted Troll Fic. It starts out with Batman finding out that he's been accused of murder, and teams up with his suddenly appearing cousin "Betty Waine," aka Batcousin, to find the real culprit, Two-Face (or Too-Face, as he's regularly called in the story). From there the plot steadily becomes more and more insane - and hilarious. Features the appearance of more random celebrities than you can shake a stick at.

The Game We Play by Dark Jester (Slash)

  • Synopsis: It is set in the comic series world in the style of The Killing Joke and Arkam Asylum: A Serious House On A Serious Earth and covers a series of events starting with Batman spending a night locked up with the Joker and chronicles how what happens and what is said that night changes what they are and how they see each other.
  • Comments: Well written, well punctuated, good story.
    • I wasn't expecting much from this, but it turned out to be a beautiful, well-written story. Blew my expectations away. Highly recommended.

The Knight Waltz by B Linky Productions

  • Synopsis: For years, Batman and Catwoman have had a very non-conventional, love/hate relationship. Neither willing to completely submit to the other's ways. What was once an endless fight, has now become a sensually painful dance of seduction and courtship. It is their unending struggle. It is their Knight Waltz.
  • Comments: Sexy, beautiful, romantic. And the production is excelent! A great short Fan Film about Gotham's sexiest and tempestous couple

An Unusual Mission by Adrian Tullberg

  • Synopsis: Having alienated every available young woman within Gotham City limits, Batman is now stuck with the dilemma of finding a date for a charity gala to fend of rumors that his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, is gay. Feeling lonely and having absolutely nothing else on her social calendar, Wonder Woman volunteers to help him out. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Comments: Though only three (very lengthy)chapters long and a dead fic, this is absolutely one of the funniest DCU fanfics this troper has ever read and well worth the read. Crowning Moments of Funny are abound, and include the various superheroes' reaction to Wonder Woman going out with that useless flop Bruce Wayne, Alfred's shameless use of Hammerspace, Bruce kicking the immortal stuffing out of two Amazon guards after Queen Hippolyta pays a visit to Wayne Manor to defend her daughter's honor, Artemis's Immodest Orgasm over Alfred's cookies, Martian Manhunter breaking up a psychic fight between Batman and Aquaman:

Suddenly the two's heads stretched backwards, then slammed themselves into the conference table, hard, with a sound like mating coconuts.
Martian Manhunter: I don't know about you but SOMEONE IS TRYING TO EAT HERE. Either start shouting like humans or beat each other up like superheroes!

"Joker Comic" by rawenna [Set in The Dark Knight Trilogy Continuity]

  • Pairings: Joker/Harley Quinn, with a subtle dash of Batman/Harley.
  • Synopsis: Two years after the events of The Dark Knight, Dr. Harley Quinn is allowed to do a therapy session with the Joker. The red-haired Oxford graduate quickly catches the Joker's eye, and is therefore dragged into a living nightmare when he escapes. Complicating matters is a certain Mr. Wayne, who seems to have developed a soft spot for Harley as well...
  • Comments: What really drew this troper to the comic was the art. The artist has a way of developing characters simply through the art, subtly revealing the Hidden Depths of the characters in spaces where the dialogue simply can't tell enough about them. The eyes, in particular, are beautifully executed. The story itself is much better than it might at first appear. There is some slight trouble with Rouge Angles of Satin toward the beginning; Harley is introduced as Harley Quinn, not Harleen Quinzel, which might annoy a few long-time fans; and there are some slight signs of an Author Insert in Harley's backstory. However, the characters are well-written, with Harley having just as much moxie as her canon counterparts, if just a tad bit more common sense; Joker is as much of a Complete Monster as the film made him out to be, even if he gives Harley a bit more respect than most; and Batman is...Batman, in all his over-protective and emotionally repressed glory. Well worth a look-see.

In Darkest Light by Meljean Brook

  • Pairings: Batman/Wonder Woman
  • Synopsis: After an odd sexual episode in the Watchtower, Batman and Wonder Woman go on a quest to find out what's been done to them that will take them from Gotham to Hades itself all while dealing with a certain Clown Prince of Crime.
  • Comments: I have two sources to blame for my love of Wonder Woman/Batman; the DCAU and this story. It was one of my first encounters with (good) fanfiction and it more than holds up today. The characterization for both Bruce, Diana, and all the peripheral characters is spot on and while the focus is most definitely on the romance that develops between the two heroes, the story delivers more than enough action to keep the average comic reader entertained. It's rated M so there's some smut, violence and naughty language, but you're on the internet so you shouldn't mind.

  • Synopsis: Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes both survive The Dark Knight's conclusion...but that doesn't mean they survive unscathed.
  • Comments: Mirrordjyn takes a concept which initially requires some suspension of disbelief and spins it in a way that proves not only believable, but also intelligent. Stunning prose, in-character while simultaneously showing great development, and maintains the overall tone established by Nolan.

  • Synopsis: The story starts with Batman investigating the abduction of a young mutant girl. The plot thickens when Batman is accused of the murder of Charles Xavier. Lots of plot twists follow until the true villains and their agenda are revealed.

  • Synopsis: Batman travels to Sin City on the trail of the Yellow Bastard and a handful of his worst enemies. Along the way, he run afoul of the Sin City underworld, Old Town, and just about everyone else.

  • Pairings: None
  • Synopsis: During Bruce Wayne's multi-year sojourn away from Gotham City, he learns detective skills by none other than the legendary Sherlock Holmes.
  • Comment: Very well written, and the characterizations for a younger Bruce Wayne and an older Sherlock are pretty interesting. They're not exactly how you're used to seeing them, but it fits within their personal histories. The plots(there are many different mini-mysteries in here) are well thought out.

  • Synopsis: Excerpts of a 123-year love letter from Gotham to London, (ongoing).
  • Comment: Every time I try to type something in here, it comes out wrong. It's impossible for me to capture what makes this fic brilliant. It's not the excellent use of semi-personification; it's not the excellent characterization; it's not the chilling tone kept all the way through the story. I don't know what it is, but I heavily recommend it. This is one of those rare fics that makes up for every bad thing that has ever raised its ugly head form the depths of the internet. In conclusion, just read it.
