Baldur's Gate/Trivia

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

The series in general

Baldur's Gate I

  • Ascended Fanon: Almost. Beamdog tried to contact the authors of the Baldur's Gate I NPC Mod (a mod which greatly expanded the characterizations of the companions from the first game) for permission to include it in the Enhanced Edition, but were unable to. Many fans accept it as canon anyway.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • CHARNAME for the Bhaalspawn; kensage for a dual-classed kensai/mage; swashy for a swashbuckler.
    • "Abduh", for the novel protagonist Abdel Adrian. Emphasis on the "duh".
    • The Machine Gun for Kivan, for his exceptional archery skills.
  • Hey, It's That Voice!:
    • Minsc is voiced by Jim Cummings.
    • Averted with Viconia, even within the game. You probably wouldn't know unless you were told that Viconia shares a voice actress with Nalia. And Raelis Shai. And Illasera of the Five. Although you'd probably notice she sounds a lot like Azula. Grey DeLisle is a really good voice actress.
    • Xan is voiced by Jeff Bennett, who also does the voice of Cespenar and Jan.
    • Kivan is voiced by Rob Paulsen, who has also done Pinky. Not that you could tell though.
    • When not being a womanizing jerk, Eldoth is reciting entries from the galactic Codex. With Neil Ross on the cast, it almost makes you wonder why they chose Kevin Michael Richardson as the narrator instead of a man who is largely associated with those kinds of roles.
    • Kevin Michael Richardson voices Sarevok. The familiarity comes when he starts telling a story about something or other. Before that, you might not notice that he's played by the same actor who voices the first game's narrator.
  • Jossed: At one point, several fans claimed that it is impossible to redeem Sarevok if he swears the Oath of Fealty when he joins. These rumors have since been proven false.

Baldur's Gate II

  • Fake Nationality: Yoshimo's voiced by Canadian actor Maurice LaMarche, better known as The Brain. But you really wouldn't know it.
  • Hey, It's That Voice!:
    • Aerie is voiced by the ever-sweet-voiced Kath Souci.
    • Mazzy is voiced by Jennifer Hale, who also voices Dynaheir, Fall-from-Grace, Bastila Shan, (Female) Commander Shepard, Samus Aran, Avatar Kyoshi and (most ironically of all) Giganta.
    • Cernd and Lilarcor are voiced by Jason Marsden, who does a lot of cartoon work these days, which may make it something of a weird experience if you pick up the game now.
    • Averted for Nalia. She is voiced by the same actress as Viconia despite the fact that the two are near polar opposites in personality, but unless you know that, you'd have a hard time telling.
    • The Solar is voiced by Charity James, who temporarily replaced Alexandra Boyd in the Monkey Island franchise.
  • Preorder Bonus: Pre-orders of Baldur's Gate II came with a bonus disc containing an extra merchant who sold exclusive, powerful items. In the UK, some pre-orders of the first game came with a copy of Fallout 1.
  • What Could Have Been: It was revealed that Illasera was originally supposed to be much stronger, but she's fought five minutes into Throne of Bhaal, so the possibility of encountering her as a newbie sorcerer or something forced them to depower her to hilariously weak levels. An optional add-on makes them all much tougher. With Ascension's upgraded version installed, she shows up with a number of powerful underlings and is much stronger herself... to the point that the fight is tougher than the final battle of Baldur's Gate II.
  • Word of Gay: Haer'Dalis' bisexual (or, as David Gaider puts it, "up for anything").
