Bile Fascination: Why else would anyone read this?
Narm: Uncle Pete's face looks absolutely hilarious when he's touching Alfie. Blame the Off-Model drawings for that.
Squick: It's about a boy being molested; this is to be expected.
They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: There is a positive, uplifting message in this book, but it was mishandled and broke into a million pieces.
Unfortunate Implications: One of the things that get resolved in the end is the kid learning that he's not gay. Whew!
- "Remember kids. You're not gay! You were just lacking a father figure and so you look for comfort in men!"
- Also, arguing with your wife in front of your kids will make them feel unloved and consequently make your brother (or brother in-law) molest them.
- So being gay is the result of being molested as a child? (What if he'd been molested by a woman?)
- Child molestation isn't a crime that you need to go to jail for; just apologize!
- Dysfunctional families can easily solve all of their problems in just a few short therapy sessions.
