"On the Next Episode of..." Catchphrase

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Usually, a TV series will will try to find a way to distinguish itself from the rest of the crowd. One of the ways is to build audience anticipation for the next episode. But how do they keep it? Add a Catch Phrase, of course. Usually after the preview of the show's next episode, we're treated with somewhere along the line "Next! On (insert show name here)! (insert episode title here)!". Afterward, there's that one phrase that this show keeps repeating in the end of every preview just once. And it's this trope. Sometimes, they pick a certain character to say the phrase, though sometimes the speaker changes.

As an Ending Trope, Spoilers ahead may be unmarked. Beware.

Anime and Manga

  • "Look forward to it" or "Otanoshimi (ni)" is a phrase that is commonly used in anime previews:
  • .hack Legend of the Twilight begins each preview with "I have special event information".
  • 11eyes: "Is there an answer at the end of the nightmare?"
  • Angelic Layer: "Let's do our best together, Hikaru!" (Misaki)
  • Aria:
    • Season 1: "Join us for a fabulous time!" (Akari)
    • Season 3: "Now, please take my hand." (Akari)
  • Asobi ni Iku yo! "I've come to play."
  • As Project Blue Earth SOS is meant to be a homage to early science fiction TV shows, each segment of each OVA ends with someone literally saying Find out on the next episode of Project Blue Earth SOS!"
  • Axis Powers Hetalia would sometimes end with a chorus of children piping 'To be continued!' or a more half-hearted 'To be continued maybe...'
  • Bakusou Kyoudai Let's & Go!! doesn't really have a catch phase, but at the end of the next episode preview, the Seiba brother shout the anime's name out loud together.
  • Black Butler: "A Phantomhive butler who cannot [do something vaguely related to the episode] is not worth his salt." This is also Sebastian's Catch Phrase within the show.
  • Bleach: "We're out of time!"
  • Braiger: "Next time, on Galaxy Cyclone Braiger - call them, and they'll arrive in a split-second!"
  • Brave 10: "Bring it on!" (Saizou)
  • Busou Renkin: I'll splatter your... guts! (Tokiko)
    • She drops it from the episode 23 preview onward.
  • Cardcaptor Sakura: Join us next time... RELEASE! (Sakura)
  • A Certain Magical Index: "When magic and science collide, the story begins!" (Touma)
  • Chaos;Head: "Whose eyes are those?" ("Sono me, dare no me?". This is the only thing said, though who says it varies.)
  • Chibi Maruko-chan: "Yep, (it gets crazy sometimes but) that's my life." (Maruko)
  • Chrome Shelled Regios: Thus far, it is either "[title of next episode], restoration!" or "Restoration to [title of the next episode]!" (The Japanese is the same; it's just that the fansubbers out there seem to be changing their minds on how to translate it.)
  • Dai-Guard: "Office workers saving the world!"
    • Or in Japanese, "Even a salaryman can defend the peace!"
  • Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z: "Super (blank) Japan! We'll make you happy and smile!" (What exactly goes in the blank varies from episode to episode.)
  • D.Gray-man: "Cleanse the soul of this pitiful Akuma!" (Allen)
    • "Bring salvation to this tormented Akuma's soul!" in the English dub.
    • One episode centered around Komui stalking Lenalee around Paris has "Bring salvation to Komui's soul!"
  • Digimon:
  • Dragonball Z: Heya! I'm Son Goku! (Son Goku, obviously)
    • An inversion, as he says it at the start of the preview instead of the end. Instead, the previews always end with Gohan saying something cute, usually to Goku. This stopped after Gohan grew up, though.
    • In the English dub, most of these were done by a narrator, but a handful were introduced with something along the lines of "Hey, this is Goku".
  • Fafner: "Are you there?"
  • Fang of the Sun Dougram: NOT EVEN JUSTICE, I WANT TO GET TRUTH Yes, in bold capital letters.
  • Familiar of Zero:
    • Season 2: "If you want to meet me again next week, sit tightly and wait!" (Louise)
    • Season 3: "I won't forgive you if you look away!" (Louise)
  • Eureka Seven: "To Be Continued!" (Renton and Eureka)
  • Fist of the North Star: "You're already dead." (Kenshiro - also his general Catch Phrase)
    • During the last episodes of the original series, it's changed to "I'll uphold the Hokuto law!".
  • Future GPX Cyber Formula: "In the next episode, the fun level is in the red zone!"
    • ZERO: "I'll be waiting for you in the Zero Zone."
  • Gaiking: Legend of Daiku-Maryu: "The flame of the heart is burning up!"
  • Gankutsuou: "Bide your time and hold out hope."
  • Galaxy Express 999 has the Conductor concluding each preview with "Jikai no Ginga Tetsudou 999 wa, [name of episode] ni tomarimasu" ("the next Galaxy Express 999 will stop at [name of episode]").
  • GaoGaiGar: "Now releasing the latest intelligence:..." followed by "Stay tuned for the order: Final Fusion Approved!" at the end of the preview. It is followed by an object or person featured in the next episode with, "This is the key to victory!"
    • The dub adds "...so don't miss it!" to the last line.
  • Glass Fleet: "A galaxy in revolution... Renaissance." (Michel)
  • Golgo 13: "Do not stand behind him, if you value your life."
  • Grenadier: "Won't you join me?" (Rushuna)
  • Gunbuster: "Inazuma... KICK!" (Noriko)
  • Gundam series:
    • Mobile Suit Gundam: "Will you survive?"
      • Dub: "Who will survive?"
    • Zeta Gundam: "You will see the tears of time."
    • Victory Gundam: "Please watch it!"
    • G Gundam: "And now! Gundam Fight! Ready, Go!" (This one is an inversion, because this happens in the episode preview in the beginning of every episode.)
      • Also played straight in the actual previews, except it's shortened to "Ready, Go!"
    • Gundam Seed ends each preview blurb with a call of encouragement to the series's Humongous Mecha from Murrue Ramius, such as, "Cut through the tangled darkness, Gundam!" and, "Shoot down the approaching darkness, Gundam!"
    • Turn a Gundam has Loran ending every episode with statements about the wind, such as "The wind is blowing" or "The wind will not bring us milk".
    • Gundam AGE: "Three destinies will form history!"
  • Hayate the Combat Butler averts this by stealing a good 40% of the population of this list (in the first season anyway).
  • Heroman: Each preview starts with ""On the Next..." Heroman:", followed by a dialogue preview, and then the announcer summarizing the episode. The previews end with Joey saying "Heroman...ATTACK!!".
  • Hidamari Sketch: "We'll be waiting at the Hidamari Apartments, please come and watch!" (Sometimes "Hidamari Apartments" is substituted with "Yamabuki High School", depending to the episode's content.)
  • Hidan no Aria: "I'll blow a hole through you, if you don't tune in next week." (Aria)
  • Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: "Can you believe it?" (Rika)
    • Actually, Fredrica, from Umineko no Naku Koro ni.
      • Of course, if we count the events of Saikoroshi-hen, Rika mutters to Hanyuu that she should return to being Rika Furude and that she should stop being the witch Bernkastel.
    • Oh, and the English version is "Can you believe in this?
  • Initial D: "Don't miss it!" in Gratuitous English.
  • Inuyasha: "See you soon!" (Kagome for the first half of the series; other characters start doing the previews after that, and even she stops using the phrase when she previews)
  • Irresponsible Captain Tylor: "Watch for it!"
  • Itazura na Kiss "Ill definitely be happy!"( Kotoko)
  • Jinki Extend:
    • Japanese version: "Please look forward to it."
    • English dub: "You know you want it."
  • Kaleido Star: "My wings are my dream, and on towards the sky!" (Sora)
    • In the preview for episode 26, everybody except Sora says "and on towards Sora!", making the Sora/sky pun that was lampshaded much earlier in the series.
  • Kannazuki no Miko: "Chikane-chan, what am I supposed to do?" (Himeko)
  • Keroro Gunsou: Starts with one of the many main characters talking about something that may be related to the next episode (though it is sometimes completely random), which Keroro then interrupts with"Who cares about that?","It's one whole story/it's two stories together..." (referring to whether the episode consists of one story or two) and finishes with "How's that? Ke~kerooo!". (Keroro)
    • Animax's dub replaces the last line with: "(Sir, yes/no sir!) Keroro!" (Keroro) Whether he says the bit in the brackets depends on how long the other character has been rabitting on for and whether he says "yes" or "no" depends on the next episode's content.
    • Whereas the official North American dub by FUNimation generally doesn't have a specific phrase, but sometimes has Keroro end with 'Frog, out!'.
  • Kinnikuman: "He no tsuppari wa iran desu yo" ("I won't need the push from my farts!")
  • Legend of Galactic Heroes: "The history of the galaxy turns another page."
  • Lupin III (2nd series): "Catch ya later!"
  • Macross:
  • Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (The Original Series only): "Lyrical Magical! I will do my best!" (Nanoha, will sometimes replace "I will do my best" with another phrase.)
  • Magikano: "Stay tuned for more magic!"
  • Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro: "This mystery is already on the tip of my tongue." (Also Neuro's Catch Phrase.)
  • Martian Successor Nadesico: "Let's watch it together!"
  • Mawaru Penguindrum: "Shall we initiate the Survival Strategy?" (Princess of the Crystal)
  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (DVD version of the Melancholy 6-Parter): "[Episode number and name]. Watch it." (Yuki)
  • Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch: "How about an encore?" (Lucia)
  • Mirai Robo Daltanious: "Cross in!"
  • Moon Phase: "Full... Full... Full... Moon!" Usually used to measure the time limit for figuring out the preview's riddle, but used even in the previews that have "Let's sumo wrestle!" instead of a riddle.
  • Natsu no Arashi: "See you bright and early tomorrow!"
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion capped off some previews with Misato promising copious amounts of Fan Service.
  • Nightwalker: The first four episodes lacked any sort of episode previews, being OVAs, but episode five onwards feature them, all narrated by Riho and ending with "I don't want eternity...!"
  • Noein: "I'm dreaming again... a dream of that summer day." (Haruka, at the beginning of each preview.)
  • One Piece: "I'm gonna be the king of pirates!" (Monkey D. Luffy)
    • The "boss Luffy" special episodes (which take place in an alternate universe where Luffy is a detective in feudal Japan) replace this with him saying "I'm gonna be...a detective?"
    • Or, in the notoriously lame English dub by 4Kids, "In the next piece of One Piece; <cue random images from next show>"
  • Onmyou Taisenki: "Slicing the seal, that is our power!"
  • Ojamajo Doremi had a different tagline for each season:
    • Season 1: "Happy, lucky, deliver to everyone!"
    • Season 2 (Sharp): "Thump, thump, tremble, tremble, spin, spin, revolve!" (Or if you're watching the Fan Sub, "Happiness and excitement for everyone!")
    • Season 3 (Mo~tto!): "Cheerfulness to cookies! We'll teach you the recipe of magic!"
    • Season 4 (Dokka~n!): "Pure, pure dream become big!"
    • OVA (Na-i-sho): "You may take notes, but pass them around secretly!" (the word naisho means "secret")
  • Otogi Zoshi: "Don't miss it!"
  • Ouran High School Host Club: "The Ouran High School Host Club will be waiting for you next week, as well." This became "The Ouran Host Club does not need any male guests next week, you got that?!" in one episode, when a non-member found out Haruhi's real gender.
    • The dub's version is "The Ouran Host Club will be waiting for you. We'll see you then!" Of course, there was a bit of playing with the line...
  • Outlaw Star: "You'd better get ready!"
  • Overman King Gainer: "Overheat!"
  • Patlabor: "Target Lock On!"
  • Pokémon: "Minna, Pokémon getto da ze!", which means roughly "Everybody, catch Pokémon!" For the record, that's the Japanese equivalent of the famous Gotta Catch Em All slogan. The English dub doesn't use this.
    • There's variations of this too: Professor Oak has "getto ja zo" and Haruka (May) has "getto ka mo".
    • In Best Wishes, it is now "tsugi no bouken wa... kore da!", said by Ash at the start of the preview.
  • Popotan: "Well then, everyone, good night!" (Unagi)
  • Pretty Cure series:
  • Prétear: "I'll win in the next episode, too!" (Himeno) However, this was only used earlier in the show—as it started to become darker and Himeno's confidence started to falter, she ends previews with phrases like "I really don't want to lose. I really don't! But..."
  • Princess Tutu: "All children who love stories, come, gather round! Hahaha..." (Drosselmeyer)
    • Also, when the episodes were split into two 15 minute parts in the second season, the preview of the second part would have the narrator asking "How will our story end? A happy ending? A sad ending? Or...?"
  • RahXephon: "The world suffused with sound." (Quon Kisiragi)
  • Every Ranma ½ preview over the show's entire seven-year run concluded with "We'll see you there!" (Akane Tendo) That's more than 160 of them!
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena: "The Absolute Destiny Apocalypse." (Anthy Himemiya)
  • Risky☆Safety: "Yoroshiku, baby!" (Risky) or "Yoroshiku, baby, desu no." (Safety)
  • Rockman.EXE Axess: "On this channel..." (Netto) "You too can..." (Rockman) "Axess!" (Both)
  • Rosario + Vampire:
    • Season 1: "...and a capuchuu for you!" (Moka)
    • Season 2: "There's still much more capuchuu!" (Moka)
  • Rozen Maiden:
    • Season 1: "Swear to me, on this rose ring." (Shinku)
    • Season 2: "That is the melody of dreams." (Shinku)
  • Rune Soldier Louie: "Straight to the Heart: Louie Punch!"
  • Rurouni Kenshin: "Look forward to it, please!" (Kaoru)

  • Saiyuki (1st season): "You'd do well to watch!" (Japanese version only)
  • Slayers: "If you don't watch, I'll go berserk!"
    • Next: "If you don't watch, I'll go berserk again!"
    • Try: "If you don't watch, I'll go berserk again, again!"
    • Dub: "... or I'm really gonna cause some trouble!"
  • Seitokai Yakuindomo: It's not a catch phrase but it states the chapter and page that the next episode week starts
  • Sekirei: "Keep watching next time!" (said by various characters)
  • Sket Dance: "We are SKET Dance." (SKET Dance)
  • Sonic X: "Don't miss it!"
  • Soul Eater: "I'll take your soul!" (Maka)
  • Stop!! Hibari-kun!: "I'm gonna stop your heart!" (Hibari)
  • Street Fighter II V: "They go to meet the mighty!" in Japanese and "Gonna burn some muscle!" in the Dub.
  • Super GALS!: "Don't you miss it! That's an ironclad rule for Gals!" (Ran Kotobuki)
  • Sugar Sugar Rune: "If you don't watch, I'll whup your butt!" (Chocolat says this line or a (fansubber-derived) variant of it in most episodes, except for a few when things get serious.)
  • Tantei Gakuen Q: "There's only one answer!"
  • Tekkaman Blade: "Wiping off the tears behind the mask." (Chief Freeman)

  1. ↑ It's a hard-to-translate pun: "seigo" means coordinate or integrate. As a rallying cry the phrase "Let's say go" is more like "let's get it together," etc. with a bit of Engrish flavoring.
