Young Wizards/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: The Lone Power; now and then, in Its descriptions, it feels less like reading about an evil power that invented death and more like reading about a very old, very lonely, very frustrated being who made a mistake and is paying for it forever . . . and yet feels defensive of Its invention, even if the invention was the reason It was cast out.
  • Canon Sue: Kit's older sister Carmela and/or Nita's younger sister Dairine.
    • Dairine gets less Sueish after she has to deal with no longer having enough power to do anything she wants and not knowing enough to make up for that, especially since that happens when her mother is dying of cancer.
  • Crowning Moment of Awesome: Several in every book. Notable examples include Nita and Kit reading out of the Book of Night with Moon AND making all the statues in NYC come to life and Fred's sacrifice. In DW it's the battle of the krakens and, y'know, everything during the reenactment in the underwater canyon. HW is one big CMOA, thanks to Dairine (who, facing the Lone Power, casts a spell that stops the expansion of the universe). A Wizard's Dilemma contains Nita's mother, who suddenly doubles her awesomeness quotient and tells off the Lone Power.
  • Tear Jerker: "The Wizard's Dilemna."
    • And Fred when the kids read from the Book of Night with Moon.
    • Deep Wizardry. Ed's sacrifice.
    • Wizards At War... several times. Memeki's, and Ponch's ascension to a higher plane of existence . AND Roshaun's death disappearance.. Jeez, Wizards At War is probably one of the most emotional books in the series to date. Right up there with A Wizard's Dilemma.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Nolan
  • Too Cool to Live: Romeo
  • Ugly Cute: Memeki
  • The Woobie: Darryl, Khretef
