The opening sequence of any show is one of its most memorable parts. You get a minute to hype up long time fans, to remind them their favourite show is about to come on. Anime studios get to show off their animation talent.
Unfortunately, openings also take a lot of time.
When a storyteller has a particularly hard hitting episode, they need all the time they can get. Thus, some opening sequences must be shortened in these episodes. What was previously ninety seconds was reduced to a single five second logo, if you're lucky. Most of the time, the opening credits gets skipped completely. If this happens, you know you're in for a hard-hitting episode.
The trope only applies to TV shows and other highly serialised content. Please do not try to add an example from a film, or something that doesn't have any title sequences.

- Violet Evergarden pulls this off every other episode.
- The second to last episode of S2 in Kaguya-sama: Love Is War skipped its opening sequence to deliver character backstory.
- The season finale of Little Witch Academia reduced its 90 second sequence to a 3 second title card to make way for the climax of the entire series.
- Episode 12 of Puella Magi Madoka Magica didn't have an opening sequence at all, only dropping the title of the series in place of where the opening should be.
