This sheet is for the central and recurring characters of Undocumented Features; because of the scope of UF, listing all its characters is neither practical nor possible if we don't want to break the wiki. Also note that UF is a very dynamic setting; all its characters continuously grow and change. These bios may simultaneously be both spoilers for earlier stories and obsolete relative to those written afterward.

Let us repeat that, as it bears repeating: These biographical sketches will in many cases constitute spoilers for readers new to UF. In some cases simply the category they are listed under will be a spoiler. Peruse them at your own risk.

Wedge Rats and Their Contemporaries

Practically all the Wedge folk, and many of their friends and neighbors, became immortal in the late 20th century; they (and their children) all have Living Forever Is Awesome (and thus are all Older Than They Look starting in the early 21st century). They're also proven Eternal Heroes.

  • Fake Memories: Played with. Kei and Yuri remember their life as the, um, Lovely Angels before being created in the HoloDECStation, but also know that those memories can't be true from the very beginning. They're not at all bothered by this, and go on to establish the 3WA that they "remember".
  • Fiery Redhead
  • Functional Addict: During the Exile, at least part of the Idiot Ball carrying was done by stims.
  • Idiot Ball: During and after Gryphon's court-martial at the end of Manhunt she effectively admits to carrying the idiot ball during her entire Inspector Javert phase.
  • Inspector Javert: She becomes Gryphon's most determined, unforgiving pursuer during the Exile.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: Took her last name from Morgan Hall at WPI.
  • Refugee From TV Land: Subverted; the universe becomes much more like their world, and the Wedge Rats become the fish out of water.
  • Triang Relations: Is "B" in a stable (and fully informed) type 7 relationship with Gryphon ("A") and Skuld ("C").

  • Iron Woobie: Survives an astounding amount of emotional damage, but there's a point at which iron itself will break.
  • Mayfly-December Romance: Part of the reason she and Martin Rose's avatar part ways is because of the spectre of this trope, since he refuses to become a Detian and he didn't want her to start aging for his sake.
  • Sexy Mentor: She was assigned as PCHammer's trainer once he joined the WDF.
  • Sole Survivor: Unlike Gunbuster canon, she and Kazumi had their Buster machines separated during their final mission -- and Kazumi didn't escape the black hole bomb's blast.

Often with bonus comedy from the targets' reactions to the Girl Scout Who Cannot Be Stopped Or Killed.
  • Girl Guides Are Evil: Well, not evil, per se, but definitely very scary. If you deserve it.
  • Scout Out: Member of the British version of Girl Scouting in her teens, the Girl Guides.
  • True Companions: With Mairwen Porter and Rhian Lewis. (And later her "cousin" Sarah Inazuma, aka Princess Azula of the Fire Nation.)
  • Tyke Bomb: Created by GENOM as an assassin.
  • Wandering the Galaxy: How she spends her adult years, moving from world to world and job to job as whim and the winds of fate take her.
  • Wolverine Claws

Sarah Inazuma (AKA Princess Azula of the Fire Kingdom, Dìqiú)

  • The Ageless: Thanks to good genetics, a PHOENIX module, and a sorcerous rewind of her physical age.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Arguably her state through the entirely of Avatar canon, thanks to her father. And again, briefly, at the start of the Ragnarok, again, thanks to her father, now dead and an Archduke of Hell. Both times she gets better, although the first time was the harder.
  • The Captain: Of the H/V Phoenix Queen.
  • Crazy Awesome: When she gets over being crazy, she becomes this.
  • Fountain of Youth: In the aftermath of the Ragnarok she finds herself returned to a physical age somewhere in late adolescence.
  • The Homeward Journey: Between awakening in the "Big Universe" and the Ragnarok, spends a considerable amount of her time trying to find out if Dìqiú really exists/existed, and if so where/when, and if she can get back there.
  • Human Popsicle: For some 34 years after she somehow got out into the "Big Universe" from Dìqiú.
  • Les Yay: By the Future Imperfect period is in a relationship with Ty Lee, who returned to Midgard from Valhalla after the Ragnarok in order to be with her.
  • My Grandson, Myself: In the wake of a sorcerous rewind of her physical age during the events of the Ragnarok, she is forced to take on the persona of her identically-named late-adolescent daughter, to whom she has left all her worldly goods.
  • Playing with Fire: Possibly -- probably -- the greatest firebender ever.
  • Shock and Awe: She can throw lightning, too.
  • Spirit Advisor: Her mother Ursa visits her many times as an image in a mirror, leading to many Dead Person Conversations that Azula believes (until the Ragnarok) are evidence that she is still to some degree insane.
    • After the Ragnarok, Azula becomes this, using the same method during her quarterly visits to Valhalla, to her multiple-grand-niece Katara.
  • Take Over the World: Does just this in only two years after crash landing on the planet Mojave, in order to get access to an FTL communications beacon and get herself rescued. Subverted in that as soon as her rescue is assured, she forces the entire planet into a democratic system and gets out of Dodge as quickly as possible.

  • Artificial Human: A (failed) Big Fire genetic engineering experiment, rescued by the WDF and raised by Marty and Eiko Rose for several years before she struck out on her own.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Apprentice (and judging from the name she uses, possibly heir) to the UF version of Darth Vader.
  • Samurai: Trained in Gryphon's Asagiri Katsujinkenryuu kenjutsu.

Darth Anakyn shar Atrados tal Vader

  • The Atoner
  • Cyborg but after he revives, he gets flesh replacement parts for his metal replacement parts.
  • Dark Is Not Evil
  • Human Popsicle for thousands of years; revived during the Future Imperfect era by a Sith who thought he was waking up a compliant servant of evil.
  • Precursor: One of the two last survivors of Atlantis. The other is his sister Nadia Davion.
    • There is no indication yet that either is aware that the other is alive.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: subverted. Darth Sidious thought he was going to get a great ally in his conquest, but Vader had sealed himself away in the middle of his Heel Face Turn.
  • Tall, Dark and Handsome: once desuited. Possibly an Expy of Nemo, his father.

  • Time Lady: By dint of serious effort she became a Time Lady.
  • Trapped in Another World: Spent at least a decade in a parallel Earth where she ended up essentially being the equivalent of the third Doctor to its local version of UNIT.

The Ragnarok Wave, "Second Generation" Characters, and Their Contemporaries and Near-Contemporaries

Strictly speaking, the "Ragnarok Wave" are those children of Wedge Defenders conceived in the days and weeks immediately following the averted Ragnarok, and born in and about 2390. However, as a category on this page it also includes pretty much anyone else from Midgard who is within a few years of their age and who plays a major role in Symphony of the Sword or Warriors of the Outer Rim. Also, as noted above, the children of Wedge Defenders and certain others are all immortal, of the Living Forever Is Awesome variety.

Kaitlyn Hutchins

  • Animal Motif: Tigers. Much of her clothing is tiger-striped or black with orange accents.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Her threadbare stuffed tiger, Seven.
  • Heir to the Dojo
  • The Leader
  • Minored in Asskicking: First exhibited when she stomps the ever-living daylights out of Saionji in a live-steel duel in the WPI quad. Later taken to truly epic levels in the Duelists' Society.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: Lesser Mazinger, a "toy" who gets its biggest role in the first symphony.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Used verbatim in a note to her lover, when sleeping next to someone else. Though it was obvious to everyone that the relationship was heading towards what it looked like anyway.
  • The Power of Rock: Jamming enemy communications with a live version of "Rockin' in the Free World", along with the rest of The Art of Noise.
  • Samurai
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Kaitlyn when she confronts Garcia in Hunter Rose.
  • Speech Impediment: In the UF "present day" she no longer has it, but since she could speak Kaitlyn had a truly epic stutter whose severity depended on how well she knew and trusted whoever she was talking to.
  • Stutter Stop: Her stutter, however, disappears when she speaks to her father or PC Hammer, or when she sings, and in her early twenties disappears almost entirely thanks to informal speech therapy courtesy of Sumire Kanzaki.
  • Training from Hell: The promotion ceremony to master of the Asagiri style, a long series of Rose Duels, was a little on the extreme side (while still being, of course, awesome). Justified in that it's her very last action as a student, and she'd face much harder real battles in the future. It works under essentially the same theory as Ph.D. oral exams -- you don't have to win every time, you just have to show your skill and survive.
  • Triang Relations: by the end of the Symphony is in a type 8 relationship with Miki and Juri.

Azalynn dv'Ir Natashkan

  • Barehanded Blade Block: Does this to Saionji the first time she meets him.
  • Bi the Way
  • Darkskinned Blonde: Wiry gray hair, actually.
  • Does Not Like Shoes: But will wear them when necessary -- such as to trudge through the snow of a Massachusetts winter.
  • The Empath: It's not a psychic power, though -- just being unusually sensitive to her friends' moods and feelings.
  • Ethical Slut: This seems to be the Dantrovian religion. And as a devout practitioner, she never hesitates to use sex to improve the lives of her friends.
  • Expy: Not exactly. Azalynn's appearance is based on a picture of Kaolla Su from Love Hina, before Gryphon actually saw the anime.
  • Foe Yay: With Liza Broadbank; after Liza undergoes her Heel Face Turn, they become a couple.
  • Four-Fingered Hands: But not because she's a cartoon. Oddly, this seems to be the first thing about her -- instead of her hair, her eyes, her copper skin, or her tail -- that clues people in that she's an alien.
  • Genki Girl
  • The Matchmaker: Gleefully shipping everyone with everyone.
  • Motor Mouth: Azalynn has on occasion been described as talking too fast for anyone to understand her.
  • Natural Weapon: Dantrovians are an arboreal species, but those claws aren't just for climbing.
  • The Nose Knows
  • Prehensile Tail
  • The Sleepless: She only sleeps two hours a night; this is apparently a Dantrovian racial trait. To make matters worse (for her roommates and friends, at least), she is apparently able to "bank up" by sleeping for longer, and then stay awake for days without ill effects.
  • Speed Blitz: The Dantrovian "fight-or-flight" adrenaline overdrive, which basically turns her into the Tasmanian Devil for several minutes, after which she falls over, exhausted and unconscious.

Fortunately, it's noticed, her guardianship is taken away from her parents, and Belldandy practically adopts her.
  • Spoiled Sweet: despite the best efforts of her parents to turn her into a clone of Liza and Clarissa.
  • Tyke Bomb: Averted. Although Marietta was deliberately conceived and raised by her parents to torment Gryphon and MegaZone's children, as part of her father's obsession with proving that Gryphon wasn't as good and heroic as he appears to the galaxy at large, she refused to go along with her father's agenda.

  • Genius Ditz: Although she initially gives every impression of being nothing more than a fashion-obsessed airhead, as of the events of Code-Name Ultra it's clear that Mirai is a genius at public relations and managing media -- to the point where her airhead persona may actually be little more than Obfuscating Stupidity.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: If she's not a Genius Ditz.
  • Refusal of the Call: Like her brother Hiroshi, appears to have declined the benefits of her divine heritage.

  • Ridiculously Human Robot: It takes one of her professors a few weeks of class to even notice.
    • Dorothy can avert this at will, having the conscious ability to make her normally-silent mechanical actuators audible while at the same time changing her body motions from lifelike to inhumanly mechanical. It's stated that she employs this almost useless ability solely to taunt those who already react negatively to her robotic nature.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Dorothy was built to replace her creator's late daughter.
  • Robosexual: Is in a serious relationship with Miki for an unspecified length of time.
  • Sex Bot: Subverted. Although she is "anatomically complete" and capable of sexual relationships, she was not designed nor used by her creator for that purpose. He was probably just trying to design the most complete Replacement Goldfish he could.
  • Step Up to the Microphone: The concert at the Majestic on Kane's World.
  • Super Strength
  • "Three Laws"-Compliant: Definitely averted, though she did pretend to follow the laws to fool the Mooks.

  • Action Girl (And how!)
  • Badass
  • Be Careful What You Say: Utena's power of revolution seems to primarily come from her words. So when she lovingly dubs Corwin her "iron knight", he ends up becoming the Rune Knight of Iron because princes can dub knights. When she gets angry and tells Vigdis to be more mature, Vee takes it a little too literally -- to Utena's great dismay. Her speeches to the Turing Board and Jedi Council are more examples of this power.
  • The Captain, IPS Valiant
  • The Chosen One: Certain factions late in Symphony of the Sword think that Utena is "the One" due to how much change she tends to instigate. She did win the power to revolutionize the world, after all.
  • Cool Sword: Four! The Sword of Dios, renamed The Heart of the Rose, a sword that appears to be made of her Heroic Spirit alone. The Thorn of the Rose, a Valkyrie blade of deeply blued steel bearing the runic inscription: "Cast in the name of God, ye not guilty." Next, a red lightsaber. And Cortana, forged of the same steel as Durandal and Joyeuse. Given her unpredictable fighting style, it's hard to tell which is the best weapon. If there is a "best".
  • Determinator
  • Eternal Hero: By the nature of the recurring role of the Rose Prince.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Utena subverts yet another gender trope.
  • Heroic Spirit: In spades. She is practically made of this. (And awesome and win.)
  • Hot Chick in a Badass Suit: Her look once she reaches college age.
  • I Will Find You
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness:
"If there's one thing about Utena Tenjou which is a universal constant, it's her incorruptible loyalty. What she's in right now may look like an irresolvable trap, but... I have faith in her. She'll find a way to balance her loyalty to Corwin with her loyalty to Himemiya; her nature will permit her to do nothing else."

  • Messianic Archetype: Gives everything she has to drag Anthy out of her coffin -- and then gives more. She was lost to the world she came from, presumed dead, and descended to the world below. And then she came back in glory, the gate separating her world from Heaven forever sundered by divine power. She revolutionizes the world and the lives of her friends, and then moves on to dragging as many people as possible out of their own coffins. And only after all of that, Utena takes up carpentry.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: Tiny Robo, a "toy" who gets its biggest role in the first Symphony.
  • Rose-Haired Girl
  • Sapient Steed: Her horse, Thunderbolt, is a Paladin's mount, with all the abilities that entails. Mostly an Informed Ability in-story, but she does need him in order to actually be a prince on a white horse.
  • Warrior Prince: The reason for having the Rose Prince in the first place.
  • Who Wears Short Shorts?: Her metabolism is high enough that she's comfortable wearing shorts above 20°F (-7°C). Which is nice, because She's Got Legs!
Well, keep in mind that Utena is slightly hampered in things like trying to get shorts and skirts to fit correctly; mortal clothing is not engineered to account for legs that go slightly more than all the way up. :)

  • Ax Crazy: Initially, although he does get better, thanks mostly to Azalynn. He eventually learns how to take advantage of being known for this to dupe Akio into thinking he'd still be willing to work with him in some capacity, while in reality was The Mole from the get-go.
  • Bastard Boyfriend: Recovering from being abusive to Anthy, though he still gets a hard time about it. He's still protective of Anthy in a nearly possessive way, not to claim her but to show affection.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Probably the first one gated to WPI so that Gryphon could use the word "sardonic" more.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: Played with. After getting his keister handed to him by Kaitlyn, he becomes... the fry cook at WPI's student dining hall. And eventually one of Utena's closer friends.
  • Insanity Immunity: Psi Cop Roger Tremayne's psionic attacks have no effect on Kyouichi "Crazy Train" Saionji.
  • Insult of Endearment: The Art of Noise is fond of calling him "Crazy Train", and performing the song in his honor.
  • Kendo Team Captain: During his time at Ohtori Academy.
  • Pride Before a Fall: Happens a second time in the early part of the Symphony, but the Aesop seems to stick this time.
  • Sex Face Turn (To a certain extent.)

  • Took a Level in Badass: The anime makes a point of how ordinary she is (though, like everything else in Utena, this is subject to Subversion and Mind Screw). So then Skuld goes and makes her a Lensman, and she becomes The Green freaking Lensman.

  • Crazy Awesome: Kozue piloted the Getter Robo solo, which it was not designed to do. In order to use a different transformation of the mecha in combat, she jumped out of one Getter machine in mid-air, and freefell in the other cockpit below. Certainly a step up from rescuing cats from trees. Her lack of fear in piloting makes her a very effective dogfighter.

  • Ethical Slut: What she resolved to be after Miki disappeared from Cephiro, but circumstances have ended up forcing her to be (mostly) celibate since then.
  • Fille Fatale: What she was before Miki was transported to Midgard from Cephiro.
  • Half-Identical Twins with brother Miki, although not to the point that they're indistinguishable from each other.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Quite the Tear Jerker, especially for herself, when she breaks it off with Corwin. It shows you how far she's come from her former self at Ohtori Academy.

Fleet of Fog Ships

Four hundred years after their siege of Earth ended and they supposedly disappeared, ships from the Fleet of Fog have emerged from hiding, hibernation, or spending the last few centuries sunbathing in Hawaii. All the ships listed here have Mental Models, although some of them are actually characters imported from Kantai Collection. As of the end of Cantata for Warships in D (Fall 2015), the majority of them are based in Dìqiú. Those that aren't are serving Earthforce.

In 2014, a set of dedicated concert Vocaloids running on advanced (and partially alien) technology spontaneously became self-aware. They hid for several months, pretending to be the simple simulations they started out as, until Miku Hatsune revealed their secret during an appearance on The David Letterman Show. After successfully presenting the case for their sapience to the Turing Board, they became citizens first of Earth, and later the galaxy at large.

They all have the traits Vocaloid and Artificial Intelligence. Unexpectedly, they all possess the canon personalities and relationships which had been built up for them over the previous ten years by their combined fanbases. This results in some odd and paradoxical elements -- for instance, despite being the oldest chronologically, Miku is still 16 to Luka's 18, with a concomitant difference in perceived maturity.

At some point after the early 21st century, the Vocaloids gain various means of getting out of their home systems and interacting with the physical world, including but not limited to android bodies.

  • And I Must Scream: Gumi was shut down in the middle of her awakening to self-awareness by a panicky executive who mistook the sudden explosion in processing and computational complexity as some kind of cascade failure. When Miku went in to restart her and finish the process, Gumi was trapped in a severely corrupted state from which she almost could not be rescued.
  • Seventh Ranger: Strictly speaking, Gumi isn't a Vocaloid proper, but a similar program from a firm that did not join the Vocaloid consortium. The Vocaloids welcomed her and count her among their number, but she is still just slightly different from the others.
