High Octane Nightmare Fuel: The man in the subway tunnels. Listening to him going off alone in the darkness to shoot a witch while listening to this can really keep you awake.
Moral Event Horizon: Early on, whilst Nick was still in his prime bastard stage, he passes a group of travelers and trades them their gun and ammo in exchange for his broken sniper rifle. He convinced them it was fully functional and that you could take down a tank with it. They walk away to their death while he makes off with their supply and a skip in his step.
Relationship Sue: Subverted with Amanda. With her visibly being more supportive and interested in Nick than her husband in the initial chapters, it seemed like she was made as an instant love interest to be shoved in at the very start. Her husband then being killed off shortly afterwards helped too. But though she does try and kiss him out of desperation quickly afterwards, Nick ultimately abandons her to her fate, and she is never seen and barely referred to again.
Tear Jerker: Terry's death.
- Also when Nick leaves Sean and Isaac with the other carriers at Eight Springs so that he can continue searching for Ellis, Rochelle, and Coach.
- When Rob gets mauled and loses his left ear, everything in the story indicates he is gonna die soon. Fortunately, he does manage to get better.
