Hello all. This has been cooking for over two months now, and has substantive description, more than 10 examples, and multiple additional categories as required by the guidelines. As such, I would like to know if it can be launched or, if it's not ready yet, what needs to be remedied first. Please kindly advise.

HeneryVII (talkcontribs)

Seems okay to me, vote to launch.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Agreed, launchable.

Haggishunter (talkcontribs)

Yes, looks good to me, and more complete than some existing pages.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Also voting to launch.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Looks good.

My one minor complaint is that the page image is a bit small and difficult to see, but that was easily fixed by going "thumb|350px" instead of just "thumb".

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I bumped it up to 400px, since that's the size I usually use on my own trope candidates.

Launched but not entry-pimped.

GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

Thank you, everyone!

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

<sigh> I just realized that I missed the opportunity to boldly declare "Launch Orbital Bombardment!"

Oh well...

So, what's the difference between this and Death From Above?

Come to think of it, wouldn't Colony Drop be similar too?

GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

It's a subtrope thereof specifically concerning space-to-surface attacks, as opposed to most of the other methods listed in DFA which are intraatmospheric. Colony Drop can be considered a sub or sister trope where the focus is on the large object being crashed into a surface and can but isn't necessarily launched from a ship. Kill Sat is a sister trope where the deliverer of attacks is a satellite rather than a self-propelled spacecraft.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

If the trope is supposed to include "space-to-surface" and "dropped from a ship", then The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress isn't an example; it fails both tests. If the trope doesn't include "space-to-surface" or "dropped from a ship", then we're back to it being the same as Death from Above.

GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

But it was an attack from the Moon to targets on Earth. How could I edit the trope description to make that clearer and more encompassing? By including natural satellites and removing the "has to be from a self-propelled spacecraft" bits?

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I don't know whether you can. The Moon is only a satellite of Earth in the same way that the Earth is a satellite of the Sun.

Anything fired (or catapulted, or railgunned, or whatever) from the Moon has to travel up until it gets to the Earth-Moon L1 point, so "throwing rice" is more like an ICBM launch than a drop.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

An Orbital Bombardment is typically a directed and purposeful military tactic utilizing Death from Above in a systematic way from the upper atmosphere to ground zero. Ergo, to my understanding, a specific type of Death from Above unique enough it could be considered a subtrope.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Ah, I understand the difference now. Thanks.

What we've discussed here should go into the description.
