Summer Slam/Awesome

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Memorable moments from over the years include:

  • The Mega Powers vs The Mega Bucks; at the innagural SummerSlam in 1988, the feud between newly crowned WWF Champion Randy Savage and "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase continued, with Savage teaming with Hulk Hogan to form "The Mega Powers" in order to fight Dibiase and his partner, Andre the Giant. One of the most famous parts of this match was Elizabeth's way of distracting the heel team.
  • The Ultimate Warrior winning the Intercontinental Championship from the main with the longest reign for that title in history -- The Honky Tonk Man -- in less than a minute in 1988. Regardless of your opinion on Warrior himself, this was -- and still is -- an amazing achievement.
  • Bret Hart winning his first Intercontinental Title from Mr. Perfect in an awesome match in 1991.
  • The Legion of Doom defeating The Nasty Boys in a Street Fight for the WWF Tag Team Titles in 1991.
  • The main event of Summer Slam 1992: Bret Hart vs. The British Bulldog (Davey Boy Smith) for the Intercontinental Championship, the only time an Intercontinental Championship Match has ever been the main event for a major PPV. The event -- moved from Washington to London to capitalize on both the WWF's popularity in England as well as British Bulldog's immense popularity in his home country -- was held within Wembley Stadium, with over eighty thousand people in attendance. Davey Boy, despite being high on drugs at the time and having suffered a severe knee injury days before the event, put on a match with Bret that is still considered to be one of the best in the history of SummerSlam (and easily the best match of Davey Boy's career).
  • Bret Hart retaining his title against his brother Owen in a Cage Match for the WWF Championship in 1994.
  • Shawn Michaels defeating Razor Ramon in a rematch of their Wrestlemania X Ladder Match to retain the Intercontinental Championship in 1995.
  • Mankind vs The Undertaker in a Boiler Room Brawl match in 1996; this match is famous because it was this match that marked Paul Bearer's betrayal of The Undertaker so he could join forces with Mankind.
  • The infamous match between Owen Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin for the Intercontinental Championship in 1997; Owen botched a Tombstone Piledriver, breaking Austin's neck -- and while he won the match, the Game-Breaking Injury that Austin suffered ultimately led him to retire in 2003.
  • Bret Hart defeating The Undertaker for the WWF Championship, with his Arch Enemy Shawn Michaels as the special guest referee (who inadvertently hit Undertaker with a steel chair that was meant for Bret), in 1997. (That chair shot helped to set up the first-ever Hell In A Cell Match, by the way.)
  • Triple H defeating The Rock for the Intercontinental Championship in an epic ladder match in 1998.
  • Stone Cold Steve Austin retaining his WWF Title against The Undertaker in 1998.
  • Mankind winning his third WWF Championship by winning a Triple Threat Match against Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H in 1999.
  • The first ever TLC Match -- where Edge & Christian retained the WWF Tag Team Championship against The Dudley Boys and The Hardys, in 2000.
  • The Rock retaining the WWF Championship against Triple H and Kurt Angle in a Triple Threat Match in 2000.
  • Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Kurt Angle for the WWF Championship in 2001.
  • The Rock defeating Booker T for the WCW Championship in 2001.
  • Shawn Michaels making his in-ring return four years after his Game-Breaking Injury by beating Triple H in a No-Holds barred match in 2002.
  • Brock Lesnar defeating The Rock cleanly to become the youngest WWE Champion in history in 2002.
  • Randy Orton defeating Chris Benoit cleanly to become the youngest World Heavyweight Champion -- and, thus, the youngest world champion in WWE history -- in 2004.
  • Shawn Michaels vs. Hulk Hogan in 2005. It's more memorable for the hilarious overselling of Hogan's offense that Michaels did than anything else.
  • The Undertaker beating Edge in a Hell In A Cell Match in 2008.
  • Team WWE, led by John Cena, defeating The Nexus in 2010's event, which was also notably marked by the return of Daniel Bryan after a 90-day "suspension".
  • CM Punk defeating John Cena in a WWE Champion vs. WWE Champion match, and then getting jackknife powerbombed by Kevin Nash before being beaten for the WWE Championship by a Money-In-The-Bank-wielding Alberto Del Rio.
