Transpacific Fanfiction

  • Recommended by Radical Taoist
  • Transpacific Fanfiction has been defunct for a while, but used to host The Varaiyah Cycle and The Nameless Sequel which contained light-hearted comedy... and Ill Met By Starlight an extremely dark alternative universe fic, that makes different use of Ranma Saotome and company.

The Works of D.B.Sommers

  • Recommended by antvasima
  • One of the most well-known long-time Ranma fanfiction writers, and continued past the 90s, helping to keep the FFML alive throughout the 2000s. In addition increasingly dedicated towards keeping the characterisation, mood, and comedy mostly consistent with Takahashi's original vision. Perhaps best known for writing Shampoo 1/2, but has arguably improved considerably since then. Avenging and The Things We Wish For are some of the more noteworthy. There is also a side-story to the former called Defending by David Dee, starring Gosunkugi of all people, as the protagonist.

The Works of Richard Lawson

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Author of Ranma story cycles from the late 1990s. His three main Ranma works are
    • Thy Inward Love: A Continuation fic which attempts, with reasonable success, to tie up all the loose threads left by the end of the manga, creating a small but well-done Fan Verse in the process. In addition to the main story line there are a number of side stories covering events in the years after its conclusion, including a crossover with Lawson's other Ranma series, Thy Outward Part, and another with Zen's infamous The Bitter End. It also had a sequel series called Magic, which no longer seems to be available anywhere on the Web.
    • Thy Outward Part: The story of Ranma's years at college after he has been locked permanently in his female form, told mostly from the perspective of a male pre-med student who falls in love with the brooding, moody martial arts mistress.
    • Roses of Shadow: When Ranma loses the Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics contest with Kodachi, he honors the terms of the bet and reluctantly moves into the Kuno home to be with her. There he learns that Kodachi and Kuno's lives are considerably darker than he expected, and discovers that the only hope he has of being freed to return to Akane is to get Kodachi the professional help that she strongly denies that she needs.

Ranma 1/2 Fanfictions By Joseph Palmer

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Reviews of the Seasons and Colors stories by Taleswapper: (1) (2) (3) (4) (5)
  • Short, award winning stories that focus on the budding romance between Ranma and Akane. Palmer was among the first authors to take Ranma Fanfiction from screenplay format to prose.
    • The Seasons Series (Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn) looks in on the young couple as the year passes. The Colors series (Red, Orange, Black, After Black, Yellow (incomplete) and Manilla) expands the focus to include more of the Nerima cast. Revenge (Revenge?, A Conversation with Nabiki) has the cast crossing into this world to interact with the author. Short Stories (Hot, Yuuki) were written on request, Hot is a self-parody of the author's style, and Yuuki was a one-hour challenge that took substantially longer. Ninja no Himitsu is a Script Fic in professional screenplay format (incomplete). The site also has Audio mp3 renderings of Red, Winter, Spring and Summer; Author's photos of real world Nerima; and artworks.

The Works of WFRose

  • Recommended by Lanky
  • Author of quite a large variety of stories, wandering through a variety of concepts while still retaining a rather differently twisted sense of humor. Some of his completed stories include:
    • Older: Ranma arrives at the Tendo dojo with his father and discovers that the agreement, while still valid, was made with the Tendo women a little bit older than normal. Nabiki is the one to take the engagement and she's thirty-seven. Kasumi has a kid near Ranma's age and Akane is happily married. Written mainly as a drama with some comedy elements.
    • Age of the Warhorse: An X-Men crossover where a young, canon Ranma is summoned into a Crapsack World where Apocalypse made him one of the Four Horsemen. Written mainly as a dark adventure.
    • Ranma 1/2: Easy Target: Ranma is an assassin, by way of The Big Hit. With all of the trimmings you'd expect from a story which fuses both into one serving. Comedy, with some action.

MZephyr

  • Recommended by Zeful
  • This author only writes Ranma/Akane pairings, but does it well enough, and with enough variety to keep it interesting. His stories usually keep the respective characters mostly IC, with some variation for the situation at hand.

Tales of Shampoo by Rob Barba.

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Only two stories, but each is a huge epic, set in a post-manga timeline, with changes and evolutions undergone by nearly every character. In Tales of Shampoo 1, we find Shampoo is living in San Francisco several years after Ranma and Akane got married, content and happy as the proprietor of the city's best Asian-fusion restaurant. Then an unexpected visitor from Japan arrives and throws everything into chaos. Tales of Shampoo 2 is a massive flashback that tells how things got from canon to the state they are at the start of Tales of Shampoo 1.

Chibi-Reaper

  • Recommended by Vindictus
  • Author of several stories, notable because of his dark humor and the interesting plots and sub-plots of his fics. Chibi-Reaper is listed here because most of his fics are Ranma crossovers of one kind or another.

General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Ill Met By Starlight by Susan Doenime and Mike L.

Those who Hunt Ninjas by D.B.Sommers

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: The story starts with Ranma refusing to get out of bed, having a feeling that it's going to be one of "those days." The reader then learns that, elsewhere, three Genius Ditz ninjas, in a last ditch effort to fail them from Ninja school, have been ordered to steal the "Sacred Urn of Cao Patty." Sure enough, Ranma is volunteered to be the security. And the entire cast joins in. You can guess what happens next.

Shampoo 1/2 by D.B.Sommers

  • Recomended by Pata Hikari
  • Pairing: Ranma and Shampoo and a whole lot of others
  • Summary: An Alternate Universe fic where Ranma stumbles upon a now-transgendered Shampoo earlier than in canon. From there things branch of into a rather epic AU.

Akane the Suicidal by WFRose

  • Recommended by Khym Chanur
  • Synopsis: When Ranma first arrives at the Tendo home, Akane is not a Tsundere but a sweet girl... who is constantly trying to kill herself. Not because she's depressed or hates life; in fact, she's a very cheerful and upbeat person. No, she keeps trying to kill herself just because. Ranma is roped into being her "one-man 24/7 suicide watch". Done mainly as a dark comedy with some drama.

Ranma the Amorous Oversexed Nympho by WFRose

  • Recommended by Cryptic Mirror
  • Pairing: Everyone/Everyone else.
  • Synopsis: A retelling of the series with one crucial difference. Instead of falling in the spring of the drowned girl, Ranma fell into the spring of the drowned amorous oversexed nymphomaniac. Can the world survive the first ever master of the Anything Goes Sensual Martial Arts? Better Than It Sounds. Lots of sex jokes, but also full of characterization. Written mainly as a comedy.

To Tell a Hawk From a Handsaw by N. Reynolds

  • Recommended by ijp92
  • Synopsis: Ranma realizes how messed up his life is, and comes up with a plan. Ranma pretends to be mad in order to outmaneuver his "friends" and "family." Insanity inspired by Hamlet, with influences from unpopular culture.

Right Moments by Judah (warning: a couple of the subplots are somewhat lemon)

  • Recommended by Kjyl
  • Synopsis: Ranma, following the wedding fiasco from the manga series, delivers a poignant line to Akane, which goes unheard... except by Happosai, who takes it as an invitation to lock Ranma in a Groundhog Day Loop of that one day, until Ranma is able to live that day just right!.

Girl Days by Rob "Kenko" Haynie (Fanfiction.net link)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons, robkelk
  • Synopsis: Ranma's mother decides that he must embrace his curse and learn how to cope with being a woman as well as being a "man among men".
    • Has a distant sequel in the form of Redheads which involved Ranma and Akane being sucked into The Slayers' universe. Unfortunately, a deadfic, though ended much sooner.

Relentless by Grayson Towler

  • Recommended by Of Science
  • Synopsis: It all starts with Happosai up to his usual thieving pastime. Unfortunately, this time, the temple he steals from has a powerful demon under its control, one that can adapt to any move used against it, and doubles its power if anyone assists against it. Fortunately for Happosai, he's still skilled enough to make sure some other sap takes the blame. Unfortunately for Ranma, he happens to be that sap, and Ryoga and Ukyo are also dragged along for the ride, running against the clock...

Guardian by Black Dragon6

Ranma Goes To War, a two-parter (second chapter is called Once more into the Breach - it also has a short spin-off) along with the sequel Chasing The Wind, available at the same link both by J. Austin Wilde

  • Recommended by Sackett
  • Synopsis: Darker and Edgier, Ranma and company gets to grow up through war (which is very well depicted, and incredibly, the characters manage to remain rather coherent. Plenty funny at time, if only when Ranma and crew are saved by Akane's cooking. Although the sequel returns to the series more fantastical elements. Also, in the sequel, Kuno finally gets his moment to shine with his own side adventure (/w Nabiki and Ukyo as his beautiful companions... or so Kuno thinks).

The Ends by User:Twoflower

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Post-wedding; Ranma, due to a convergence of forces, realizes just what a mess his life is with all the fiancees and rivalries he has... so he tries to find a way out. Described by the author himself as "My farewell to Ranma ½, and my condemnation of it." An interesting meta fanfic. It references dozens of other Ranma ½ fanfics as Ranma searches for his happy ending.

The Bitter End by Zen (eyrie.org link)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: A dark take on Ranma and Akane's relationship, focusing on increasing Akane's violent tendencies, Ranma being unwilling to defend himself against her, and going into psychological motivations behind their behavior. Considered the definitive Ranma Dark Fic.

Hearts of Ice by Krista Perry Fisk

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Exiled to the realm of myths and legends by Cologne's magic, Akane must fight to survive as the sole mortal in a land of deadly supernatural creatures. To make matters worse, time runs faster there than on Earth, and her very existence is being "written out" of the human world. Her quest to return to the mortal world before she's grown far too old for Ranma, paralleled by Ranma himself holding desperately onto his memories of her even as the world around him erases her existence, while Cologne schemes to thwart both of them, all drive this fic to a heartbreaking climax, and a heartwarming ending.

Crossed Wires and its sequel Mixed Signals by K. Hyam

  • Recommended by Sackett
  • Synopsis: Ryouga and Ranma decide to put more emphasis on the "friendly" part of their friendly rivalry and end their feud. Needless to say things never run smooth for Ranma. What with Ryouga having to pose as "Ranko's" boyfriend, Ukyo ending up as Shampoo's other husband (don't ask) without either of them breaking their engagements to Ranma, and the ultimate body swap roulette it's a comedy of epic errors even by Nerima's standards.

Lure the Tiger from the Mountain, by Allyn Yonge

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: They say that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Ranma, like his father, is a con artist. Meanwhile, the Tendo clan has suffered rather more than in canon, and its daughters are all the more dangerous for it.

In the Lunchroom, by Trimatter

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Between fics, the characters of Ranma ½ gather in the cafeteria to complain about Fanon conventions.

Timeslip

  • Recommended by Sackett
  • Synopsis: A nice short story that explores an AU while maintaining continuity with the Canon. It's only eight pages long in MS Word.

Smoke & Mirrors by M. Loader

  • Recommended by Sackett
  • Synopsis: Do you love Kasumi Tendo? Wish she got to be The Hero for once? But how, what with the whole Yamato Nadeshiko thing? Here is a fanfic for you in which Kasumi remains in character as a Yamato Nadeshiko while demonstrating exactly why you should never ever cross one.

A Wasted Wish by Tail Kinker

  • Recommended by Looney Toons, robkelk
  • Synopsis: Ranma gets a wish from Skuld, and asks to learn more about his mother and the grandmother he never knew. The next thing he knows, he's got three days to spend twenty years in the past—with an unconventional, rebellious little redheaded fireball named Nodoka. Time Travel, but not a Peggy Sue or a Fix Fic—in fact, Ranma is warned that if he changes too much, his wish will be undone and everything will be reset. WAFFy, but not Glurge.

Ghost Story by Mike Loader

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Extreme Dark Fic. Twenty years after the events of Ranma ½, two teenaged boys dare themselves to investigate a local urban legend, only to discover a decades-old mystery—and several deadly secrets.

Pastpresent by Susan Doenime

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Genma dies, and leaves behind to Ranma his journal. How exactly did Genma and Soun become such good friends? And how did he ever convince Nodoka to marry him? Set before Soun and Genma studied under Happosai.

Ryouga Crossover and sequels by Mark Latus

  • Recommended by Jinx
  • Synopsis: Ryouga Hibiki arrives at the Tendo Dojo, much to the surprise of Nabiki (who he claims he's engaged to) and P-chan. Then Ryouga Hibiki arrives—and wonders how he got there from China, where he's married to Shampoo. In all, seven Ryouga Hibikis arrive, all from different timelines and all engaged to different girls. However, one of them is an impostor with a deadly plan. Can they work out which, before it's too late? Its sequels continue the meetings between different Ryougas.

Akane by Kirinin (Also avaliable here.)

  • Recommended by Sackett
  • Synopsis: Akane wakes up with total amnesia regarding six months of her life, and who is this Ranma girl she keeps imagining and how did she die?

The Truth and the Tempest by Neon-Ronin

  • Recommended by No Such Method Error
  • Synopsis: Right after the end of the manga, as Ranma and Akane finally work out their relationship, a young man with extraordinary powers appears in Nerima. He's after the source of some chaos stream, and of course the Nerima Wrecking Crew is heavily involved. Ranma and Akane are in for a big surprise and have to undergo heavy ordeals, when finally All Hell Breaks Loose...

Something's Fishy Here by Jack Staik

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: As Staik himself puts it, "A Horatio Alger type tale of what a boy can accomplish with an unlimited supply of corpses."
  • Comments: How can a story with so many dead bodies littering the scene, including Ranma's, be so funny? How can Ranma still get the girl and live happily ever after? Read and find out. Delightfully, wickedly funny.

Careful Destiny by Todd Hill.

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Ranma uses a wish to get rid of his curse, but doing so changes the entire world around him—and his own history—to something he doesn't recognize. How will he cope with being a sedentary geek with an annoying sister—and no relationship whatsoever with Akane, who is engaged to Kuno?
  • Comments: A classic from the 1990s, incomplete and probably a Dead Fic now—the last time the author released a chapter was in 2007. Also the source of an equally classic Lemon sidestory, A Careless Destiny.

Second Chances by Lord Archive (Crossover with Ah! My Goddess)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: When Ranma dies battling a demon summoned by Happosai, Akane almost dies of grief. It takes a wish from Urd to give her hope and life—and Ranma—back; Akane returns to the day she first met Ranma, with all her knowledge and training from her time with him intact, determined to save him and not make the same mistakes again.
  • Comment: Unusual for a Ranma Peggy Sue, in that it's not only Akane, but an Akane well-trained by Ranma. Another incomplete, epic work from the 1990s, and despite the author being one of the less technically-adept writers worth a look, if only for its somewhat different approaches to some of the characters.

Give Peace A Chance by Stephan "Twoflower" Gagne

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Ryoga's older brother Kosumo was the heir to the family's martial arts style and dojo until he went to America and discovered The Grateful Dead. Now he's back and calling himself "Cosmo", and he's a pacifist. And Ryoga is consumed by a mixture of fury, envy and confusion.
  • Comment: An early classic by one of the early greats of Ranma fiction, who has since gone on to groundbreaking original work like Sailor Nothing.

Pagliacci by Ed Becerra

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Gosunkugi's got a plan—he'll go to Jusenkyo and jump in the pool of drowned hero, come back, defeat Ranma, and win Akane's heart. Unfortunately, Jusenkyo doesn't work quite that way. Gosunkugi comes out a hero, all right, just not the kind he expected...
  • Comment: Incomplete, of course, but wickedly funny nonetheless. The pool that Gosunkugi actually jumps in will have you chuckling, as will its effects on the poor schlump. Don't miss the wonderful but unfinished side story [dead link] by Rob "Kenko" Haynie (of Girl Days fame).

Le canard a la Peikin by Sinom Bre

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: When the Tendo sisters visit the Nekohanten in search of Peking Duck, they only contribute to the stress afflicting Shampoo that day—much to Mousse's distress.
  • Comments: A very funny short that derives almost all of its humor from the collision of characters—and will probably leave you rolling on the floor. Original Flavour.

Genma's Journal by Thrythlind

  • Recommended by Nanya
  • Synopsis: Nabiki decides to rummage through Genma's stuff and finds his journal. A few photographs and copies later and everyone finds out that they've been played for fools.
  • Comments: One of the earliest fics that portrays Genma as a Magnificent Bastard and set the bar that many other fanfics followed afterwords. Plus has a great line about the "clouds and the rain".

Featherbrite's Tale by Gregg "Metroanime" Sharp (chapter list and links are at the bottom of that page)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Titania, Queen of the Fairies, has won The Bet. The tiny change she makes in the life of a very young Ranma leads first to his acquiring a small faerie creature as a friend, and then inexorably to Ranma and the rest of the usual cast becoming ersatz Sailor Senshi who find themselves locked in a war with the Unseelie Court and their Yakuza pawns.
  • Comments: This is a Fuku Fic in a world where Sailor Moon remains fiction. Sadly, it is a Dead Fic, but clever readers can work out the most probable intended ending from the information available to them. Despite Sharp's rather uneven technical skill, and evidence here and there of him changing concepts in mid-stream, and completely starting the story over from the beginning once, Featherbrite's Tale is still a fun read. Just be prepared for the frustration of the premature ending.

Am I Smart? by Penguin-sa

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: A retelling of the anime episode "Am I Pretty?", except this time, Ranma imprints on Nabiki.
  • Comments: Well written, with a good eye for characterization. However, be warned that this is one of those stories that end with Ranma deciding he is actually a "she" and treating the Loss of Identity as a good thing, with "Ma-chan" merely deceiving the others into thinking that "he" has come back during the ending.

Kasumi The Biker Slut by Trisha L. Sebastian (Arguably NSFW)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: After one fanfic-standard afternoon in Nerima too many leaves her kitchen in a smoking ruin, Kasumi Tendo decides her life needs a slight change.
  • Comments: Not a literary masterpiece, but a fun skewering of what was already standard Ranma fanon in 1998.

Ranma is Dead by Gary Kleppe

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: This is a very short story that still manages to compress a great spoof of both the series and fan stories.
  • Comments: Looney Toons: A wonderful parody of Ranma fanfiction.

Last Curtain by Nikholas F. Toledo Zu

  • Recommended by Zulaq
  • Synopsis: When the universe achieves its purpose, what happens then? (Taken from FF.net)
  • Comments: This one-shot is sort of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead meets Ranma ½. That's all that really needs to be said about it.

What Do You Want? by polenicus

  • Recommended Looney Toons
  • Status: Last updated July 2020
  • Synopsis: When Nabiki drags a morose Ranma to a beach weekend after he and Akane break up in the wake of the end-of-manga wedding, she thought she was just doing him a favor and getting a little something for herself out of it. She didn't anticipate liking the person Ranma became away from the Madness that was his life in Nerima -- and she didn't anticipate she'd find herself wanting to fix the Madness so she'd see that person more often. Now Nabiki's in the midst of defusing the world's biggest bomb. If only the granddaughter of a Yakuza boss hadn't made things even more complicated by trying to take her network and business away from her... And just when she's got a handle on the fiancee situation, Ranma's mother seems bound and determined to make it all worse.
  • Comments: A very good new Ranma fanfic -- something rare in recent years. And unlike so many later Ranma fics, it manages to ignore virtually all the Fanon that has accumulated in the fandom over the pevious thirty years. Read this for the plot that just keeps twisting in ways you don't expect or for the unique characterizations that are still canon-compliant, or the revelations that will by turns enthrall you or break your heart -- but whatever you do, read it.

Clothes Make The..., by Nightelf, Katrina Halbred, and Ichinohei Hitomi. (FFn link)

  • Recommended by robkelk
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Ranma decides to cross one last barrier he'd set in his mind, and when almost everybody else was out of the house, transforms to his female form and tries on women's underwear. However, the "almost" happens to be Kasumi, and she, after getting him to Please Put Some Clothes On, has a long discussion with Ranma about self-identification. The next morning, when Ranma is thrown into the koi pond, he doesn't come up and complain; instead, Akane has to rescue him. No, her. Ranma attends school as a girl, and thus begins Ranma's exploration of gender identity and self-identity. Some take it well, some take it poorly, and only Kasumi knows the truth: that is it Ranma's deliberate choice to do this. And Ranma isn't the only one to explore her self-image: other people in the household end up learning things about themselves as well.
  • Comments: For a story written in the 1990s, its attitude toward sexual identity is remarkably similar to that held by many in the 2010s and 2020s.

Crossover Fics

Stories which crossover with other characters or works.

Crossovers with Sailor Moon where Ranma becomes a Sailor Senshi were so common in the mid-to-late 1990s that they have their own page: Fuku Fic. Please list recommended stories of this type in three places: here, Sailor Moon/Fanfic Recs, and Fuku Fic.

The Shadow Chronicles by Mark MacKinnon

  • Recommended by Of Science
  • Synopsis: Starts with confusing sightings of Ranma in two places at one time. From there, it spins into a wide-reaching story line involving demons, parallel dimensions, and a lot of tragedy.

On A Clear Day You Can See Forever also by Mark MacKinnon

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Ranma from The Shadow Chronicles travels the dimensions, seeking to forget the horrible tragedy he's been through. His travels end when he finds himself mysteriously trapped on a fantasy-themed world. Meanwhile, a certain priestess has had a vision of a red-haired girl causing some sort of catastrophe. The city it takes place in is like fantasy meets New York meets New Orleans at Mardi Gras.

The Titans and the Lost Boy by Lathis

  • Recommended by Comartemis
  • Synopsis: When Ryouga crosses paths with the Teen Titans and agents of H.I.V.E. in the Chinese wilderness, a chain of events is set in motion that will thrust Ryouga into the spotlight of his own adventures. When martial arts mayhem meets super hero hijinks, chaos ensues.

Dark Titans, by Lathis

  • Recommended by Comartemis
  • Synopsis: The sequel series to The Titans and the Lost Boy, Dark Titans focuses on the aftermath of the battle with H.I.V.E. as the Nerima Wrecking Crew adjust to the circumstances that they find themselves in.

Ryouga Versus The Roadrunner by Rowan Seven

Magical Girl Ranko vs Z Fighter Ryouga, again by Rowan Seven

  • Recommended by slain
  • Synopsis: A multi-crossover continuing from where "Road Runner" left off, Ryoga somehow found his way onto Namek, and learns enough that in his next match with Ranma, his rival is out with the first punch. In a search to find a style to counteract the insane speed and strength Ryoga has, Happosai tells him about Pretty Magical Girl Martial Arts. You can figure it out from there.

The Dark Lords of Nerima, by Claymade (link)

  • Recommended by Kjyl
  • Crossover with Sailor Moon, is not a Fuku Fic.
  • Synopsis: One Youma manages to escape being killed by the Senshi during one of their battles and is subsequently rescued by Ryouga, next thing you know both the Dark Kingdom and The Senshi are convinced dark forces are brewing Nerima, but don't worry Ranma has a plan... Ok, worry.

Grand Tour and its sequels Journey, Odyssey and the currently written Walkabout, by Drunken Grognard

  • Recommended by Neep
  • Crossover with Lyrical Nanoha, various Star Trek series, Slayers, Berserk, Sailor Moon, and some cameos
  • Synopsis: Ryoga's unparalleled ability to get lost gets boosted by a suspicious artifact and sends him skipping through dimensions. Concerned with what his jaunts are doing to the fabric of the dimensions, the TSAB sets out to stop him, and brings Ranma along to help track him down. Hilarity, unexpected confrontations, and ass-kicking most righteous ensue.
    • The sequel divides its time between the Inner Senshi going to Mid-Childa to train under Nanoha while Ranma, a provisional agent of the TSAB, aids the others in defending Japan from a strange new enemy. More crossovers occur (including Hellboy and Black Lagoon).
    • The third story focuses on the consequences of all these dimensions becoming aware of each other and gaining access to dimensional transfer technology, as Grand Admiral Thrawn makes his classic mistake—focusing on his crew and his enemies and paying almost no attention at all to what his allies are doing—and things from beyond begin to intrude.
    • The fourth and current story returns to Japan as Ranma tries to gain some stability in his life. Unfortunately for him, his father engaged him to a resident of the Magic World. And just as Nanoha and Fate was getting maternity leave...
    • Has its own All The Tropes page here.

Relatively Absent by Mark "Togashi Gaijin" Shurtleff (Crossover with Sailor Moon)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: When Sailor Pluto kills herself with a timestop at Mugen Gakuen, the Gate of Time decides it wants a different guardian, one who will not impose her own agenda on the Gate's ancient mission and on the course of the future. The only candidate it can find, though, is a critically-injured Ranma, locked in female form and buried deep under a landslide in the aftermath of a failed confrontation with Prince Herb over the Chisuiton.
  • Comments: An incredibly well-written fic that was already building up to epic length when its author renounced fan fiction entirely and tried (with surprising success) to purge it from the Web. This a lost classic—if you can find it (usually as an archive maintained off-line by a fan), consider yourself incredibly lucky.

Paradise Lost by Andy Kent (Also available here.)

The Wild Horse Thesis (Fanfiction.net link) by Lisa Grey (Crossover with Neon Genesis Evangelion)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Pairing: Ranma/Asuka/Rei
  • Synopsis: Gosunkugi uses a magic spell to send Ranma into Neon Genesis Evangelion, where he expects Ranma to die a quick, messy death. Luckily for Ranma, Evangelion was one of his favourite shows. But what Ranma doesn't know is that Gosunkugi sent the Tendos the tapes of Ranma's life in Evangelion so they could watch his "demise". And Gosunkugi doesn't know that Ranma has an unexpected patron who's got a vested interest in seeing him survive...

Black Roses, Bandannas, and Koopa Shells [dead link] by Shritistrang (Also available here.)

  • Recommended by SAMAS
  • Synopsis: Kamek the Magikoopa is furious when his granddaughter Kimmy quits Bowser's service and runs away to marry a "renegade" Koopa from the Mushroom Kingdom. In his anger, he curses her unborn children, one to become delusional, and the other to have No Sense of Direction. In order to protect them from Kamek, Kimmy has to reluctantly leave them on Earth, with only two enchanted keepsakes to keep them safe: A black rose, and a spotted bandanna. Sixteen years later, Kimmy comes back to Earth to find her children, who, if you haven't guessed by now, go by the names of Kodachi Kuno and Ryoga Hibiki.

Ranma and The Doctor by Turbanator

  • Recommended by Cryptic Mirror
  • Synopsis: Exactly What It Says on the Tin: a crossover with Doctor Who (Tenth Doctor). After failing to get his curse unlocked at the end of The Musk Dynasty arc Ranma faces spending the rest of her life as a girl with no hope of a cure. Until The Doctor turns up and takes her on a series of adventures through time and space (with Kuno and Ryouga along for the ride). Completed fic, takes place during Doctor Who season three with Ranma taking the place of Martha.

The Ranma Horror Kuno Show by Arthur Levesque

  • Recommended by Storvik
  • Synopsis: Ranma and Akane, lost in the woods, come upon a building where all of their main antagonists (Kuno, Kodachi, Ryoga, Shampoo, Mousse, Ukyo) have met in secret to fight among themselves to decide which of them is most worthy of Ranma/Akane/"The Pig-Tailed Girl", with the plot line loosely following The Rocky Horror Picture Show (including parodies of all of the songs sung by the cast). Hilarity Ensues, culminating in a free-for-all battle between all of the characters using a new martial arts style (geisha fu) which involves the use of boas, sequins, corsets, and high-heeled shoes. Takes place sometime around the seventh season of the TV series, given the presence of Ukyo, and Ryoga using the shishi hokodan. Light on romance, heavy on slapstick and humor.

The Virus by Chris Jones

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Through a combination of Washuu and Mihoshi from Tenchi Muyo!, Ranma's Jusenkyo curse has become a highly contagious virus that spreads across the world. This results in massive social, political, and comedic change as both global society and the cast of other anime have to deal with everyone becoming Gender Benders. This was followed by other authors writing about what the world might be like if everyone was able to switch gender. The full archive can be found here; http://vffa.ficfan.org/author_cjones.html

Heir to the Empire by Ozzallos (Fanfiction.net link) (Crossover with Sailor Moon)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Sailor Moon is missing the Ginzuishou, the golfball-sized magical gem which acts as talisman and focus for her powers. But why does Ranma have it? And what are these memories it seems to be awakening in him?
  • Comments: See our page on this fic for more detailed information.

Hell Is A Martial Artist by Ozzallos (Crossover with Oh My Goddess)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Hild, the supreme ruler of Hell, has found a new plaything in a gender-cursed martial artist from Nerima. Ranma Saotome has found an apparent ally and refuge in a strange "magical girl lawyer". But when Urd accidentally prompts a deepening of their friendship to levels unexpected by either, the nature of the game changes for both.
  • Comments: Certainly a unique fic in its choice of protagonists and in the execution of their relationship, but in no way a shipping fic. As with anything by Ozzallos, the text is rife with word choice and spelling errors, but the strength of his narrative can carry a reader past the spelling problems. Be aware that as of the middle-late 2010s, Ozzallos appears to have abandoned Fanfiction.net and other venues for a personal area on a fanfiction discussion board, so while this story is incomplete it is not, despite all appearances, a Dead Fic.

Bishonen Senshi Sailor Moon by Ryo-Wolf

  • Recommended by Cryptic Mirror
  • Synopsis: 1000 years ago, Queen Serenity used the Ginzuishou to send the souls of the Senshi into the future to be reborn as normal girls. However, something went terribly wrong. For some reason, they were reborn as male martial artists instead. Yes, this time round Ranma is Sailor Moon (and he isn't happy about it at all).
  • Comments: An affectionate parody of your standard Fuku Fic, sadly a Dead Fic but what there is is very good and worth a read.

Ranma's Apartment by Chris Jones (Crossover with Ah! My Goddess)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: One day too much of the usual, and Ranma snaps. He storms out of the Tendo home and vanishes, leaving the lives that had orbited him in ruins. He enters college (carefully out of sight of the Nerimaniacs), and finds himself sharing a dorm bathroom with his next-door neighbor: Megumi Morisato. Meanwhile, Akane has gone goth and seems to have moved on with her life—but secretly she and Ranma are seeing each other. Of course this can't last...
  • Comment: Five chapters exist of this story, which is incomplete (though surprisingly not annoyingly so—the last extant installment ends on a satisfactory-enough note that you don't mind it being a dead fic quite so much).

Magical Girl Nanoha ½ by Lost Star (AU Crossover with Lyrical Nanoha)

  • Recommended by Nanya, Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: A simple meeting between two characters creates changes that snowball from a small chance encounter. The interactions are hilarious, and very much in character. Plus it is one of the few fan fictions that this troper has ever seen that makes both Shiro and Genma awesome without them doing anything directly.
  • Comments: Not the first crossover seen between Ranma and Nanoha, but this one is quite well-done. It is basically a re-telling of the first and second season of Nanoha, but done well enough that even those unfamiliar with it can follow the story line easily enough. The author also does an incredible job at blending the two universes together, and is working on showing how the changes cause the ripples. Quite worth the read.

Making Kittens by Sinom Bre (Crossover with All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, implied off-screen crossover with Ah! My Goddess)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Nuku-Nuku's a real girl now, sort of, and guess what? She's next on the fiancee hit parade. Unfortunately for Ranma, she triggers the Neko-ken... or is that fortunately? Depends on who you ask.
  • Comments: Another funny, funny short from Bre, borderline off-color but without being explicit. Part of what makes it work is that so much of it is told through dialogue, as though the reader were eavesdropping on the action.

Grave's New Life by Nanya (Crossover with Gold Digger)

  • Recommended by Thrythlind
  • Synopsis: Instead of re-merging with Brianna, Grave Digger takes off into the wilds of Jade just as Ranma is banished there by coincidence. They meet causing all sorts of changes to both time lines.
  • Comments: Essentially complete, the ending does leave some question as to what happens from that point.

Ryoko Saotome by Thrythlind (Crossover with Tenchi Universe)

  • Recommended by Nanya
  • Synopsis: Tenchi and Akane both died during the final battles, leaving Ryoko and Ranma heartbroken.
  • Comments: Well-written, complete, and with a planned sequel. Nagi is given slight Character Derailment, but the writing is solid enough. It leaves you wanting more.

Journey by Daniel Ruth (crossover with Palladium Rifts)

  • Recommended by Three Headed Dog
  • Synopsis: Many stories focus on the end of the Journey; this fic focuses on the journey itself. Ranma deals with a lot of things in other realms.
  • Comments: Likely my favorite fic, but it has not been updated in years.

Forcibly United by Gaming Ikari (crossover with Black Lagoon)

  • Recommended by lanky
  • Synopsis: A magical artifact leaves Ranma and Ryouga bound together at the wrists. Cologne knows someone who can help, but the pity is the man lives in Roanapur. With no other leads, the boys head there to try and fix their problem. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Comments: Better Than It Sounds. Ranma and Ryouga have a good Back-to-Back Badasses dynamic, and the author manages to portray the Black Lagoon cast almost scarily in-character. The author manages to hit the sweet spot which blends the tone of Ranma ½ with the tone of Black Lagoon almost perfectly. The story is already over 60,000 words long, with an uncommonly high technical quality to the writing.

Pantyhose Taro, I Choose You! and its sequel, Evolve, Pantyhose, Evolve!, by David Tai

Ukyo Kokiri Ukyo [dead link] by Shritistrang

  • Recommended by SAMAS
  • Synopsis: A retelling of Ocarina of Time with a twist: Nearly every character is related to a member of the Nerima Wrecking Crew. Ukyo is Link's other childhood friend and companion, Ranma is the half-brother/sister of the Zora Ruto, while the Tendo sisters are Impa's daughters.

Ranmatronic by Kadunta

  • Recommended by Cryptic Mirror
  • Synopsis: A Ranma/Tron fusion-fic. From the author: The MCP couldn't compute Ranma's curse, so he had to be removed from the physical world. Nabiki thought she was smart, but not enough to stay out of trouble. Let us follow them as they try to return to the real world.
  • Comments: Previously a Dead Fic, but Kadunta has recently[when?] returned.

A Ralts In Moonlight by Usagi-Hasano

  • Recommended by Flairina
  • Synopsis: Ranma/Pokémon crossover. Ranma falls into the spring of drowned Ralts and is transported to the Pokemon world. He still changes genders- but he can't become human. Uh oh.
  • Comments: One of the few good Ranma/Pokémon crossovers out there. Currently[when?] waiting for updates.

Big Human on Campus by Black Dragon6 (Crossover with Rosario + Vampire) - Has a Trope Page

  • Recommended by Darkholm
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Ranma gets booted out of Furinkan after dealing with Saffron, and ends up on the bus to a new school called Youkai Academy, meeting a rather timid guy named Tsukune on the way. At least this place can't be worse than Furinkan, right?
  • Comments: Ranma doesn't replace Tsukune, but rather they go to school together and build up a companionable friendship. Tsukune retains Moka's affections, and Kurumu's as well, but not the other girls'. The characterizations are believable, the dialogue is entertaining, and the spelling and grammar are good. It is especially funny to watch Ranma try to convince people he's human while simultaneously destroying every enemy he encounters.

Wild Effect by Largo

  • Recommended by Kalaong
  • Synopsis: The Illusive Man resurrects Ranma Saotome and sticks him on the Citadel to show the galaxy just how extraordinary Humanity is. Hilarity Ensues. No, seriously; less than an hour after s/he wakes up, s/he charms Avina, Goomba Stomps Udina, beats the stuffing out of a krogan, then gorges hi/rself on Turian food without going into convulsions. It just gets weirder from there. Nihilus is amused... and impressed.

The Anarchists by Materia-Blade

  • Recommended by Flairina
  • Synopsis Ranma wakes up... in a bed... in someone else's body... and he's in the future?! And who's this white queen people keep talking about?
  • Comments Crossover with Sailor Moon. A "corrupt sailors" fanfic, and a very good one. All I have to say is, enjoy.

Tales of the Foxcat by Ozzallos

  • Recommended by Flarina
  • Synopsis Betrayal leaves Ranma in the Narutoverse, in a thirteen year old body. He meets a young blond-haired boy and the destinies of both are changed forever.
  • Comments Just read it. I hate Naruto prior to this, but now... As noted above, be aware that as of the middle-late 2010s, Ozzallos appears to have abandoned Fanfiction.net and other venues for a personal area on a fanfiction discussion board, so while this story is incomplete it is not, despite all appearances, a Dead Fic.

Final Approach Ranma by Trimatter (Crossover with Futaba-Kun Change!, Final Approach)

  • Status: Complete
  • Recommended by: Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Thanks to a government project designed to prevent a disastrous drop in the Japanese population, Ranma is entered into an arranged marriage with someone new—a very nice boy by the name of Futaba Shimeru. Yes, the government is quite aware that Ranma is a boy. The government is also aware that he's a Gender Bender—all they care about is offspring. So Ranma is shipped off to live with the Shimerus long enough, at least, to see if (s)he is compatible with Futaba. When Ranma discovers the Shimeru family's secret (and vice versa), he begins to wonder if there might be a better life possible for him...
  • Pairing(s): Ranma/Futana
  • Comments: The Final Approach content is minimal—just enough to launch the rest of the fic, after which it lurks in the background mostly out of sight. The real thrust here is the Futaba-kun Change!/Ranma ½ crossover—what happens when Ranma meets an entire family with almost the same sex-changing ability as his, who don't regard him as a pervert or a freak. A well-written story with a mix of WAFF, comedy and a little drama—including wonderfully funny moments such as Ranma and Kasumi's mini-conspiracy to blow Nodoka's mind late in the story.

Lonely Souls by Fred Herriott (Crossover with Sister Princess and Urusei Yatsura)

  • Recommended by: Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: What is the strange link between Ranma Saotome and Ataru Moroboshi? Why has Ataru abandoned Tomobiki and retreated to an island off the coast of Japan? Why has Ranma retreated from Nerima and joined him there? Who are the girls who claim to be Ataru's sisters? Why do they insist on addressing Ranma as "big sister"?
  • Pairing(s): Ranma/Ataru
  • Tags: Fem!Ranma, OOC!Ataru
  • Comments: A huge but incomplete work that ties two of Rumiko Takahashi's most famous works together with an unexpected romantic plot whose roots stretch back to well before the beginning of either series. Despite the apparent unlikelihood of the central pairing, the development of the relationship is careful and slow, and presence of the girls from Sister Princess both help and reinforce the plot, which grows increasingly epic in scale as the action moves from two Tokyo neighborhoods out into the galaxy at large in discrete but inexorable steps. May not be to everyone's tastes, and the abrupt ending in the middle of some high-tension adventure is particularly frustrating, but it really is worth giving it a try.

Ranma/Akane

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the Official Couple.

Ranma and Akane: A Love Story by Eric Hallstrom (Fanfiction.net link)

  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Pairings: Ranma and Akane. Duh.
  • Synopsis: A year later than in canon, a world-weary, scarred and female Ranma shows up alone in Nerima, and almost immediately becomes entwined in the life of a tired, despondent Akane Tendo. A master of swordsmanship and a chi control that verges on (and at times actually becomes) magic, Ranma rescues Akane from a slough of despair and becomes her teacher. Like any version of Ranma, though, chaos follows where (s)he goes—and a far more powerful Ranma brings far more powerful enemies with him/her.
  • Comments: A literary masterpiece that must be read to be appreciated. Technically this is a crossover, but the crossover elements are mostly peripheral to the existing story and don't require any familiarity upon the part of the reader. Sadly, it's a Dead Fic, which is all the more heartbreaking because of the scope of the entire project of which it is a part, and the tantalizing hints about that project which are given during the story's first segment.
    • In early August 2009, Hallstrom announced he was going back to work on Ranma and Akane: A Love Story, starting with reposting and revising the existing chapters, though nothing has been heard since.

Comes The Cold Dragon by Donald Granberry

  • Recommended by Looney Toons, User:Robert
  • Pairings: Ranma and Akane, Nabiki and Herb
  • Synopsis: After the failed wedding at the end of the manga, Ranma begins demonstrating symptoms of combat fatigue, and Doctor Tofu worries what might happen if a martial artist of his caliber were to snap and go berserk. And when Ranma manifests a powerful new ki ability with little control while Tofu tries to treat him for PTSD, it only makes matters worse. Then, just to complicate matters, Ranma begins hearing voices in his head...
  • Comments: An extraordinary work, epic in size but sadly incomplete. There are Lemon and Lime bits, but they are small (and/or optional) and support the story line; there are also Ho Yay-ish moments, but that's all they are, moments, nor are they a major part of the story—there is no slash here. Oh, and keep an eye out for the Cameo by Jacques Cousteau. (No, I'm not making that up.)
  • Well written but very out of character.

Tales of Ranma and Ranko by Jack Staik and Lady Tesser

  • Ranma's Secret
  • Ranma's Fiancees
  • A Matter of Romantic Chemistry
  • Our Wedding Day (Incomplete, deadfic)
  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Pairings: Ranma and Akane, Ranko and Dr. Tofu, Ryoga and Shampoo, Kasumi and Pantyhose Taro, Nodoka Saotome and Ichiro Hibiki, a few others
  • Synopsis: Akane, expecting to find Ranma cheating on her in a secret lair, instead discovers both the depth of his feelings for her and an untouchable, potentially unbeatable rival previously unsuspected by anyone in Nerima. With everything to lose, she opens herself to him, prompting a cascade of events that not only shatters the Love Dodecahedron in which the Nerima Wrecking Crew have been trapped, but also reveals long-held secrets and plots.
  • Comments: The defining work of a married pair of fanfic talents who burnt very brightly for a very brief time in the late 1990s-early 2000s, before apparently withdrawing from fanfiction entirely. This is an epic work of comedy leavened with drama, and its only true fault is that its last extant installment, Our Wedding Day, remains unfinished. Especially noteworthy for all but ignoring Fanon conventions of the time, instead striking off into entirely new territory in both concept and execution, and succeeding beyond all expectations in the process. Warning: there is some minor lemon content in a couple places (including an optional lemon scene you have to go out of your way to read), and some unusual romantic pairings throughout.

Destiny's Child by Duncan "Fire" Zillman (AU Crossover)

  • Recommended by Hasegawa Rayven
  • Pairing(s): Ranma/Akane, Ranma/Rei
  • Synopsis: What if Ranma had been born during the 1600s, and on his visit to Jusenkyo, he fell into the spring of Drowned Young Girl? Now, when he is splashed with cold water, he turns into a 12-year-old girl that never ages, and the only way for him to turn back is through painfully scalding hot water.

Sincerely, Akane by Angela Jewell

  • Recommended by Sackett
  • Pairing: Akane/Ranma
  • Synopsis: Akane has been issued a challenge by her girlfriends. Write a love letter to Ranma. Does "I don't hate you... much" count? Apparently this is going to require multiple drafts before it resembles a love letter—and even then it's the oddest love letter you'll ever read.

Tendo-Saotome Anything Goes by Kirinin (Also available here.)

  • Recomended by Pata Hikari
  • Pairings: Ranma and Akane
  • Synopsis: Has been described as Ranma as a Shojo series. Before the story starts, Akane accidentally breaks Kuno's leg, which causes her to become reluctant to fight at all. Ranma confesses his curse to Akane, they let the rest of the Tendos think that Ranma is actually a girl and that Genma has gone crazy. What follows is a quiet, relationship focused story as Ranma and Akane grow close and learn how to deal with people... without fighting.

The Key To A Successful Interview Is A Good First Impression! by The Sage of Toads

  • Recommended By: Looney Toons
  • Pairing: Ranma/Akane
  • Synopsis: As the title suggests, Ranma makes a good impression on Akane in their first meeting, prompting a healthier start to their relationship, and the two find themselves facing the lunacy of their everyday lives side by side, rather than at each others' throats.

Genma's Daughter by Deborah "ClassicalGal" Goldsmith

  • Recommended by Looney Toons, robkelk
  • Pairing: Ranko (Ranma)/Ryouga
  • Synopsis: An Alternate Universe that doesn't look like one until well into the manga story line: what happens if Ranma's reunion with his mother reveals a secret his father has been hiding from him since he was a toddler—the secret of Ranma's very identity?
  • Comments: The theme isn't to everyone's taste, but the story is very well written. If you like it, be sure to follow up with its sequels, Equal Halves (complete), in which Ranko of Genma's Daughter met the Ranma of the canon world via a wish by Kuno and spent much of the rest of the fic trying to get back to her own universe. There is also Notes From Julliard (still in progress).

When Soun Tendo found this out he made a wish to a Chaos Goddess, who alters everyone's memories, or possibly events to set up the the canon scenario, with Ranma being the cursed Boy/Girl we all know and love, curses, fiances and chaos, Oh My. From there the story jumps forward to about halfway through the manga series when a botched magic spell returns Ranma to girl form. At first she is confused and violent, but as her memories start to return she adjusts to her new/old life and develops feelings for a certain not lost any longer boy. Unfortunately, she still has to deal with all the old troubles.

The More Things Change

  • Recommended by Sackett, Looney Toons
  • Pairings: Ryoga and Ukyou
  • Synopsis: The first big story using the plot of Ranma shoving all the unwanted suitors off on Ryoga. Lighthearted, slapstick like the original, and well written. It also introduces one of the better Big Bad original characters.
    • It's not so much that Ranma shoves everyone off on Ryoga, but that Ranma and Akane solve their problems and get together, so Fate/Destiny/Something transfers the chaos to Ryoga to keep it going; he ends up with Ukyo as a fiancee, other contenders appearing from the woodwork, and a rival appearing from his past.

I Want A Refund by Red Dragonfly

Then he discovers that his love is actually a man... and that everyone knew. Particularly Nabiki Tendo. Vowing vengeance, Kuno challenges Nabiki to a battle of wits, demanding a full refund as his prize if he wins. Nabiki finds this a wondrous opportunity to make money and have some fun at the same time. However, she soon discovers that Kuno's stupidity is surprisingly dangerous when fully focused on her instead of Ranma and Akane.

Chasing the Rainbow by rewind gone nuts

  • Recommended by Kishou
  • Pairing(s): Ranma/??? (Either Shampoo, Ukyo or Kodachi; while it was more open to begin with, the author has revealed a much clearer plan for the future in the more recent chapters)
  • Synopsis: After receiving and digesting a long lesson in might-have-beens and could-bes, Ranma decides to start making his own plans for his life and his future. Sequel to Another Rainy Day in Nerima, in which Ranma watches the serial effects of what could have happened in potential one shots via a magic mirror. As a result, in this story, Ranma decides to resolve his fiancee troubles by legitimately dating them one at a time.

Chúi on this! by Franzibald

  • Recommended by Cryptic Mirror
  • Pairing: Ranma/Shampoo. Hints of Akane/Ryouga and Ukyou/Mousse too.
  • Synopsis: Happosai sets out to torment Ranma, so far so usual just another day in Nerima. Needless to say it goes horribly wrong, not just splitting Ranma into male and female, but then transforming Ranma's male and female halves into a pair of Chui. It's a race against time for the NWC to find the cure, and just because Ranma is an animate inanimate object doesn't mean the parade of crazy martial arts challengers will stop either.
