Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

These things about Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.

  • Americans Hate Tingle: In a poll conducted by Dengeki [1], Lauda gets placed 7th, which ended up taking the western fanbase by surprise, as many disliked him due to his insufferable personality, being hostile to Suletta even after most characters had warmed up to her, and felt his story arc to be unnecessary. By the time the series attempts to redeem Lauda, most feel that it's a bit too late.
  • Broken Base:
    • The second season has been met with mixed reception, with the notable complaint being its rushed pacing. Some felt that the series wrapped up most of its plot too quickly, making it weaker compared to the first. While the other side acknowledges its issues, they still enjoy it for its strong character writing.
    • A few weeks after the Grand Finale episode, Bandai was forced thanks to a misprint of a magazine to admit that Suletta and Miorine weren't really a gay couple, or at least not married. This caused a huge crack in the West thanks to most fans of the series on the region being overly focused on the pairing over all other aspects of the show, and those who suspected all along that the relationship was never meant to be seen as homosexual. Wild conspiracies sprouted immediately that Japanese executives were against it or pressure of chinese censorship, with the less far-fetched ones was that in a conservative country like Japan this would never be allowed, despite shows with homosexual couples being fairly common on the romance genre on the archipelago. The head writer, Ichiro Okouchi, would eventually confirm that they are indeed married.
  • Fan Hater: A lot of the people into Gundam ended up becoming genuinely sick of the Suletta x Miorine shippers, mostly because of their sheer aggression in pushing the ship everywhere; it only got worse as some of the shippers started calling anti-shippers "homophobes" despite shipping having next to nothing with real life homosexuality or the LGBT rights movement. On 4chan's /m/ board, the continuous Sulemio spamming actively broke the long-held friendship between mecha and yuri fans, as the mecha fans constantly pointed out that the series' quality was being ruined by overt Pandering to The Base (through the school slice-of-life scenes which added next to nothing to both the plot and character development) instead of enhancing it while the yuri fandom doubled down on the ship. By the ending and the aforementioned "open to interpretation" incident, the fanbase became such a dumpster fire that it became common advice to avoid discussing the series altogether, a status that has only previously applied to Evangelion.
  • Gateway Series: Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury serves as an entry for those who want to dive into the Humongous Mecha genre with a fine balance between lighthearted and melodramatic moments.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Rather than the usual Mobile Suit battles as with most Gundam series, most ended up getting drawn to the relationship between Suletta and Miorine.
