Luminary Uprise

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

In this Kingdom Hearts fan fiction, two very important things happen. One is that the former members of the Organization, minus Xemnas, decide to join forces with the good guys for once. Another is that Xehanort is back with a vengeance, and this time he's out to destroy all the worlds, including ones that have never been seen before in the Kingdom Hearts franchise and never will be.

It's full of crack, crossovers, mythology gags, adventure, comedy, drama, and shipping...but most of all, good old friendship and the age old battle against evil.

Read it here on deviantART.

A version can be found on fanfiction.net as well, but that updates more slowly and is far, far behind.[when?]

Tropes used in Luminary Uprise include:
  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Sora's Keyblade can conveniently cut through Daleks.
  • Action Girl: Kairi is one now.
  • All There in the Manual: Some gags come from other fics by the same writer.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: Meg's crew, the Dawn Brigade, Rothy, and Jenna Deblin.
  • The Atoner: Most of the Organization.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Juan Ponce de Lèon.
  • Ax Crazy: Saïx.
  • Back from the Dead: Most of the villains. Justified in that only the villains can deal with Hades, who is also a villain.
  • Badass Normal: Ilia. She has no magic powers and her only weapon is a dagger, but she can throw that dagger perfectly and is gifted with horses.
  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: Juan Ponce de Lèon was an enemy of Jack Sparrow.
  • BFG: Gaz loves these.
  • But Your Wings Are Beautiful: Belle likes Adam whether he's human or a Beast.
  • Capulet Counterpart: Yzma.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Don't forget ANY small detail that seems important.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: If Euryale wasn't standing between Luxord and Hera's garden, he probably would have charmed her.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Myed, at first. By the time he wises up, this fic gets GIR.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Cid would have one of these if the #$^$^& author didn't censor every @#%^#% word he said.
  • Cruel Twist Ending: Jack Sparrow falling under the Ring's glamour on the rim of Mount Doom. And they were ALMOST there!
  • Cutting the Knot: Saïx's response to what would have been a normal-length battle with Grimmjow. He gets annoyed and just smashes him to bits instead.
  • Dark Horse Victory: A strange version. Sora and Rosalina's teams in the Brawl were destined to face off with each other, but we never find out who the victor is because Ganondorf interrupts the match. Would this make him the winner?
  • Dead Little Sister: Vexen sometimes suffers this for various of his charges.
  • Death of the Hypotenuse: Aerith. AGAIN.
  • Destruction Equals Off Switch: The first step to disabling the Leviathan.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Did Lexaeus just punch out Sephiroth?
  • Different for Girls: Marluxia suffers this while crossdressing to distract pirates.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: ZEXION.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: To an extent, Riku and Ilia.
  • Dysfunction Junction: The Organization, of course.
  • Equal Opportunity Evil: The Neo-Organization is made up of several famous Big Bads from across fiction, so this is only to be expected.
  • Everybody Hates Hades: Well...he kinda has a way of screwing things up for our heroes...
  • Everything's Better with Princesses: The Princesses of Heart have expanded to WAY beyond seven. Newcomers to the group include Zelda, Kida, and Tiger Lily. Tiger Lily's speech justifies it, explaining that only the original seven have the powers of the goddesses.
  • Evil Overlord: If you don't know it's Xehanort, you weren't paying attention.
  • Face Heel Turn: Vincent Valentine. Though his betrayal may not be so black and white as it appears...
  • Fake King: Ganondorf takes over the Chinese Emperor's body for a little bit.
  • Fantasy Kitchen Sink: Justified in that everything is separated to the world it belongs in. The story as a whole, however, runs the gamut.
  • The Fashionista: Early on, it's established that Marluxia is wearing Larxene's boots. Later on, Cruella de Vil shows up, and wants nothing more than to put her animal-skin designs on La Cienega Boulevardez, Xellarednic, and Jafar.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Putting all the different Disney characters, along with several of the bad guys from the Organization, on the same side of the battlefield turns them into Nakama.
  • Foe Yay: Vexen and Yzma. Then they confess their love and it just becomes Yay.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Roxas resents being this.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Edward Cullen has helped the team out. He was absolutely annoying the whole time, but he did help.
  • Funny Animal: Clive the Mudkip.
  • A God Am I: Xehanort...and a few of his followers, too. Sauron and Aizen are pretty bad offenders.
  • Heel Face Turn: Yzma.
  • A Hell of a Time: Well, if you happen to be a Replicant, a Sanderson, a Shinigami, or Tails Doll, anyway.
  • The Hero: Sora, of course!
  • Heterosexual Life Partners: Zexion and Vexen, to the point where they automatically refer to the other as "my brother" though there is no blood relation. Well, maybe Zexion isn't heterosexual per sé, but Vexen isn't the object of his affections.
    • Also, Myed and Axel.
  • High Heel Face Turn: Xellarednic
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: Juan Ponce de Lèon
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Xehanort (twice), Peacock Hera
  • Humongous Mecha: Gundam Bowser
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: The full implications of Zexion's laguz blood come out while he is battling Rayquaza.
  • Idiot Ball: Vexen...also, Jack Sparrow.
  • If You Kill Him You Will Be Just Like Him: Or, her. Sora lets Redd go because he doesn't want to be branded a murderer.
  • Ill Girl: Zexion. Not quite a girl, though...
  • Fundamentally Female Cast: The Cast Full of Pretty Boys was the original Organization of Nobodies. The new crop of evil Nobodies is those of the Princesses of Heart...and if Gaston's word is anything to go by, they're all rather sexy.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Surprisingly, XALDIN.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: You hurt Zexion. Prepare for Vexen to bring the pain.
  • Lady of War: Kairi.
  • Literal Genie: Ursula plays one when she makes a contract entitling her to kidnap "the one whose true name is Melody." "Myed" turns out to be a male variant of Melody, which causes a stir in said contract.
  • Living Forever Is Awesome: Xehanort is immortal. He loves it.
  • Lonely at the Top: Marluxia has a vision of this sort while playing with the throne at Disney Castle.
  • Loser Son of Loser Dad: Sephiroth considers Zexion to be a prime killing target because he carries the DNA of Micaiah (his mother) and Jenova (his sister).
  • Loud of War: Myed and Axel fight over the radio. Axel likes rap and Myed likes rock. Each of their favorite genres drives the other insane.
  • Love At First Sight: Teen Tidus and Pixie Yuna.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Vexen is Hojo's child.
  • Made of Iron: In Commexo City, a freakin' building falls on Vexen. He's fine.
  • Magikarp Power: Myed, Ariel, and a lot of the team, actually.
  • May–December Romance: Myed is 21. Rosalina is...immortal? Also, due to an experiment with the time/space continuum, Vexen's body is a lot older than his brain, making his romance with Yzma this.
  • Moral Event Horizon: When Xehanort crosses this is up to you. His backstory with Mirage? His plan to eradicate Toontown? When he killed Light Yagami, his own associate? You decide.
  • Morality Chain: In the beginning, Xaldin and Saix seem to only be going with the plan because the rest of their associates did.
  • More Dakka: Xigbar's general philosophy, which he tries to teach James Turner.
  • Morphic Resonance: Everyone's Pridelands and Ant Island forms. Also, the forms the Star Command team takes in Andy's Room.
  • Multiversal Conqueror: Xehanort (No, really?)
  • Mundane Utility: The Organization uses this a lot. However, though it is never mentioned expressly in the fanfic, Word of God states that Axel, who is unable to touch water, cleanses himself by setting himself on fire. Basically, his magic powers are his custom shower.
  • My Beloved Smother: Myed's mom gets a little overprotective when she sees him for the first time in a few years...
  • Names to Run Away From Really Fast: Xehanort's last name is Skardsen. Taken from a Neopets anagram game, it's an anagram for "darkness."
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Sora, Bulblin was on YOUR side...
  • The Nicknamer: Xigbar...and this was written BEFORE the existence of 358/2 Days.
  • Ninja Maid: Well...she's not a ninja, and she's not a maid, but waitress Jenna Deblin is pretty tough when she wants to be.
  • No Fourth Wall: In chapter 6.5, Lexaeus engages the author in conversation, threatening to smash the fourth wall if she doesn't give him more stage time. This leads to his "hero moments" in chapter 7. Most of the characters (minus Sora) seem to know they are fictional, as well. This may be because we find out later that Lexaeus actually did break the fourth wall somewhere around the time of 6.5. After that, yelling at the narrator isn't an odd circumstance anymore.
    • The characters also find themselves in Disney World, which is based on the real Earth with NOTHING fictionalized except the travelers. That chapter guest features the author's aunt, who remains unnamed.
  • No Name Given: Beast's name (Adam) is given, but he tells everyone including the author that he considers that name a Discontinuity.
  • No Yay: Marluxia x Audrey II
  • Non Sequitur Scene: La Vie Boheme!
    • Lampshaded: "VIVA! LA VIE! ...oh, wait, we're not doing that anymore."
  • Not the Fall That Kills You: Myed is swept off a safety beam, and the only thing below appears to be the whirling blades and grinding gears of the Pie Machine. Sora doesn't give up hope, and leads a few others to find him. As it turns out, Myed landed in one of the few safe spots from the blades! It's the exploding safety valve. Celebrations are halted. Don't worry, he's fine.
  • One-Winged Angel: Most of the villains have one of these forms. Juan Ponce de Leon grows to incredible heights, for example, and most notably, Hera grows a peacock tail when she becomes angry and homicidal.
  • Only Six Faces: Parodied. The stock character for Traverse Town in the original Kingdom Hearts shows up to explain WHY there are so many of him: they're all clones!
  • Ornamental Weapon: Xehanort has a pretty scary Keyblade, but after a while, he uses it as a receptacle for princesses' hearts and prefers to fight with his silver sword, Agony.
  • Overly Long Gag: You can make a lot of puns out of "Even."
  • Pair the Spares: The original reason for the Riku/Ilia pairing was so Sora and Kairi, as well as Link and Midna, could be together without outside interruptions or loose ends left behind.
  • Pals with Jesus: The main party meets Amaterasu, who was recently revealed to be the ultimate wielder of light. They get along pretty well.
  • Papa Wolf: Vash and Vexen.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Try a paper-thin anagram. "Teckor Meat" in Neovia is not a meat shop. It's an anagram for "Team Rocket." And the Meowth at the counter is definitely not a Neopet.
  • Parental Abandonment: Zexion and Vexen are orphans, and Marluxia's mother died while his father cut ties. These are all important to their development. Also, Kairi frequently struggles with the fact that her father is the unsentimental and dead Ansem.
  • Player Nudge: An in-story example. Waka's prophecy turns out to be the key to saving an entire world.
  • Plot Coupon: Keys to Hera's garden, Grand Stars, materials for Link's sword.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Sephiroth's wing now seems to be visible 24/7.
  • The Power of Rock: The entire point of the first Atlantica arc, where Maleficent is defeated because Sora and Riku were singing "Knife Fight" while battling her.
  • Princess Classic: Peach might be the only one that isn't secretly a badass.
  • Punch-Punch-Punch Uh-Oh: FIVE characters find this out at once during the initial ambush on Xehanort.
  • Ragnarok Proofing: Atlantis, City in the Sky.
  • Retool: Over its numerous chapters, Luminary Uprise has evolved a lot to accommodate new fans, the author's changing pleasures, and the occasional fan suggestion. Most notably when Axel and Myed changed from insufferable rivals to best friends.
  • Redeeming Replacement: The Queen of Hearts hands her crown to Kairi.
  • Relationship Writing Fumble: Due to the large amount of yaoi in Kingdom Hearts fics, many chapters come with a "NOT A PAIRING" disclaimer.
    • Lampshaded when (gay) Zexion thinks his lover (gay) Marluxia is jealous of the attention he fawns upon (straight) Vexen.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Xaldin is indirectly responsible for the appearance of button-eyed Thidlea.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: The Jabberwocky, Jafar.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Kairi is now an Action Girl rather than a damsel in distress.
  • Must Make Amends: Axel makes Vexen an apology cupcake for the Castle Oblivion incident, since the resurrection was already done for him.
  • Romantic False Lead: Aerith for Cloud at first.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: All the Princesses of Heart, most notably Kairi and Tiger Lily.
  • Satellite Character: Princess Bee. She's just Queen Bee's daughter.
  • Serious Business: All the games on Neopets.
  • Shipper on Deck: Three words: "Zexy's Midnight Runners." (Otherwise known as the band Zexion and Myed jokingly form to sing about how Axel and Larxene should be together.)
  • Ship Sinking: There will be no Zelink, there will be no Marth/Caeda, and no matter how much you want it, there will be no 411.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Kairi wants Sora because of his amazing heart.
  • Sixth Ranger: Ilia, followed by all of Myed's pets.
  • Slap Slap Kiss: Axel and Larxene on the way up the Tung Shao Pass.
  • Small Girl, Big Gun: Gaz. Just Gaz.
  • The So-Called Coward: After a while, Myed evolves into this.
  • Squishy Wizard: Vexen's ice powers are amazing. He's also one of the most delicate members of the team.
  • Standard Female Grab Area: Parodied. Everyone knows Kairi's one weakness is that she doesn't know how to break a grip on her arm.
  • Starfish Aliens: Well, there are Tribbles in this fic...
  • The Starscream: Sort of. Sauron wants to overthrow Xehanort and have MORGOTH take his place.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: The Lost Boys.
  • Invisible to Gaydar: Zexion. Mostly the case for Marluxia too (he likes women's boots but draws the line at dresses).
  • Sticky Fingers: Jack Sparrow. Aladdin is a case of retired Sticky Fingers that come out to play when Jack starts stealing his stuff.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Well, now you know why Axel and Reno look so much alike. Same goes for Vexen and Hojo.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Sephiroth go BOOM!
  • Super Drowning Skills: How a few of the characters end up on Davy Jones' ship. Subverted with Myed; he can breathe underwater, but was trapped in an airtight barrel. Defied with Jack Skellington; he's just dead.
  • Super-Powered Evil Side: The Princesses' Nobodies.
  • Taken for Granite: Zelda, as a tribute to her Taken for Granite state in Minish Cap and Phantom Hourglass.
  • Take That: As the story approached 200 chapters, the author celebrated by having her favorite Final Fantasy villain (Sephiroth) kill her least favorite Final Fantasy villain (Kefka) offstage!
    • However, when she grew to like Kefka, she had Sephiroth murder Seymour Guado. This one was less subtle.
  • Take Your Time: There always seems to be time to take a nap at Radiant Garden.
  • There Are No Therapists: There just AREN'T.
  • Thunderbolt Iron: The silver sword Agony isn't technically made of silver, and we'll leave it at that.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Jack Sparrow to varying degrees.
  • Too Many Belts: This fanfic contains Leon.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Ariel, Kairi, Ilia.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: When Vexen finds out he's Hojo's clone-child...let's just say it's a good thing Hojo is already dead. Sephiroth also holds a grudge against Hojo AND Vexen.
  • Tyke Bomb: Even's original purpose was to be one of these for Hojo. He escaped because Hojo wanted to dismantle him and start over.
  • Ultimate Job Security: Why hasn't Olaf been sacked yet?
  • Unholy Matrimony: Maleficent/Captain Hook, Jafar/Cruella de Vil
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: Axel and Larxene, Vinny and Audrey. Eventually they both Resolve.
  • The Un-Reveal: How Xigbar lost his eye.
    • This was of course written before Birth By Sleep's major information was released; the story will most likely be changed so that Terra did it.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Jack Skellington is advised to go into hiding on a few worlds to keep from freaking people out...but not many.
  • Urban Segregation: Upper and Lower Halloween Town.
  • Verbal Tic: Most of the usual Kingdom Hearts catchphrases are here in small doses; more notably, Cid now swears ten times per sentence, but it's all censored with punctuation marks.
  • Villain Song: Maleficent has one at last! It's..."Thriller." As made famous by Michael Jackson.
  • Villain Sue: Xehanort. This shouldn't be a surprise by now.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: There's a reason why those who oppose Xehanort are known as "The Resistance." Most townspeople seem to think he's God.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Axel is hurt by water. Conversely, Vexen is hurt by hot climates.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Sora gets chewed out after he threatens Bulblin for no reason.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Kairi and Namine.
  • Woman in Black: Maleficent trades in her black robe for a black leather coat, a black mermaid tail, and a black bikini.
  • Xenafication: Kairi.
  • X Marks the Hero: Now that Saix has switched sides, this applies!
  • You Have Failed Me...: Hojo's original plan for Even. Even gets away.
  • You Killed My Father: Sephiroth killed Zexion's father AND mother! Zexion wants blood.
  • You Require More Vespene Gas: The plot of the Hyrule arc.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: Zim causes one.
