Larva

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Larva is a South Korean slapstick black comedy 3D animated series made by TUBA n. The series follows the eponymous larva, Yellow and Red, two friends trying to survive the world day by day. Other characters include Black, an Atlas beetle, Brown, a dung beetle, Pink, another larva, along with many other characters. The first season has Red and Yellow living in a sewer, the second season has them living in an apartment, and the third season has them living on the streets of New York. The upcoming fourth season will have them living on an island.

Two video games based on Larva have been released. Larva, available for the Sega Dreamcast, Sega Hi-Saturn, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows, and Larva in New York, available for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Linux. Larva also has plenty of The Merch.

Tropes used in Larva include:
  • Ass Shove: Surprisingly often for a kid's show. A couple of examples had Red being shoved up Yellow's rectum, and Yellow about to get his own head shoved up his behind.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Both Black and Violet are very protective of the other bugs.
  • Big Eater: Both Red and Yellow, but especially Yellow. He can put down massive quantities of food.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Red occasionally shows jealousy that Pink loves Yellow instead of him, with one episode having him trap Pink and nearly kill Yellow.
  • Death Is Cheap: Many episodes end with the larva dying or about to die. Don't expect them to stay dead by the next episode, though.
  • Driven to Suicide: During the Mayfly episodes, Red falls in love and takes care of a mayfly only for her to die the next day, three days in a row. After the third mayfly dies, Red attempts to kill himself by throwing himself at Prism to be eaten. However, the angels of the mayflies fly down and save him, before they pass on to the afterlife.
  • Enemy Mine: In one episode, Frog and Prism are fighting, much to the enjoyment of the larva. They agree to set aside their differences and give Yellow and Red a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The credits cartoon on "Life of a Rat" reveal that Gray has a loving wife and children.
  • Farts on Fire: Yellow can light matches with his farts, and if he eats chilies, he'll fart fire.
  • Fat Idiot: Yellow is pretty stupid and food is his passion, and he has become obese on more than one occasion.
  • Five Man Band: The main characters roughly fill the roles of a band.
    • The Hero: Yellow is the most likely to take charge.
    • The Lancer: Red always works closely with Yellow.
    • The Big Guy: Black is the biggest and strongest of the bugs.
    • The Smart Guy: Brown usually solves problems through creative uses of his poop.
    • The Chick: Pink fulfills the stereotypical girly role and tends to the other's injuries.
    • Sixth Ranger: Rainbow occasionally joins the main bugs on adventures.
  • Gasshole: Yellow constantly farts, and occasionally belches, too.
  • Genius Ditz: Yellow has shown much intelligence at times despite appearing stupid, such as in "Genius Yellow" where he devises and successfully executes a complicated plan to steal Red's ham.
  • Gross-Out Show: A lot of gags involve farting, poop, snot, and other gross stuff. The characters also tend to have things shoved up their butt a lot.
  • Heterosexual Life Partners: Yellow and Red are best buds, despite their constant fighting.
  • Hidden Depths: A lot of characters.
    • Yellow, on the surface, is an idiot obsessed with food. However, several episodes have shown that he is quite intelligent, such as "Genius Yellow". He also seems to have some resentment towards Red, letting him fall to his apparent death in "Gum" and torturing him over several nights in "Yellow's Revenge".
    • Red, on the other hand, seems to be quite miserable with a Jerkass Facade. Many episodes show that he is unhappy on the inside. He has also shown acts of kindness towards other bugs (such as making sure the Mayflies live full, happy lives) and cares for Yellow's life, being deeply upset when he apparently dies in several episodes.
    • Black started off as a brutish bully who would beat up Yellow and Red for little or no reason, but later episodes revealed he is pretty protective of the larva, with the official website even saying he's like a big brother to them. He takes a level in kindness starting in Season 2.
  • Kick the Dog: Red constantly beats, mocks, and abuses Yellow, and occasionally other bugs.
  • Napoleon Complex: Red is the smallest bug, and is extremely aggressive.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: In one of Red's nightmares, a horde of zombie Yellows attack him, but are driven away by the sunlight. Red promptly transforms into a zombie himself, and is burned by the light.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red is, fittingly enough, the Red Oni, being aggressive and hot-headed, while Yellow fits more into the Blue Oni role, being more level-headed and calm.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: Prism is a chameleon that is constantly trying to eat the larva.
  • Superhero Episode: "Larvengers", which has the bugs as Expies of Marvel superheroes, as well as "Larva Rangers", which has them as the Larva Rangers.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: The most common food item the bugs eat and fight over are miniature hams.
  • You Dirty Rat: Gray is a gray rat who tries to eat the bugs, and takes joy out of chasing and scaring them. Subverted later on, when he appears to pull a Heel Face Turn courtesy of Black.
