King Richard (film)/YMMV
These things about King Richard (film) are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.
- Overshadowed by Controversy: The movie was already not a big hit when released, but all buzz it could create after its lead actor won the Oscar for Best Actor was overshadowed by "The Slap"; seventy-five minutes before the Oscar was given, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock in the face over a bald joke about his wife Jada Smith.[1] Will Smith initially refused to apologize during his subsequent Oscar speech and in fact seemed to reaffirm his actions - understandable as this was, it all but ensured the incident would overshadow his performance.
- Not helping matters any further, Will Smith was given a ten-year ban from the Academy, while Chris Rock's next stand up shows sold out. This kicked off a second controversy about the severity of the punishment, as viewers and others immediately thought of high-profile actors and directors that were credibly accused of far worse than slapping someone in the face.
