Joan of Arc/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Jehanne's Voices have been seen as either the result of a genuine religious experience, schizophrenia, or drugs. In his 2006 scholarly sourcebook Joan of Arc: La pucelle, Craig Taylor noted that it's necessarily a matter of personal belief or opinion whether Joan belongs in the Good or the Insanity versions of the Hearing Voices trope. The soldiers following her were by and large convinced this was an example of the Good variety. Their faith in her and her mission drove them to many victories as a result. In her time it was believed benevolent supernatural beings could talk to people. It was also believed that evil supernatural beings could impersonate good supernatural beings and talk to people.
    • One should also be careful about drawing any conclusions based solely on the records of her trial.
  • Common Knowledge: Joan is often venerated as a Christian martyr, but she was not canonized as such, as she does not meet the criteria under doctorine (her sentence had been handed down by a canonically constituted court, which did not execute for her faith in Christ, rather for her private revelation.) Rather, she was canonized as a Virgin - yes, that is an official saintly title.
