James and the Giant Peach/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Complete Monster: Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge.[context?]
  • Crosses the Line Twice: James' parents abruptly gets eaten by a rhinoceros at the beginning of the story. While having your parents die at a young age is never pleasant, the situation is so absurd, part of you can't help but laugh a little.
  • Nausea Fuel: That disgusting fish head pie James receives from his aunts for dinner in the movie. This is, in fact, a real meal called stargazy pie.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The concept of suddenly losing your parents because of an animal attack. While it's not as scary in comparison, being later sent to your aunts that care about nobody but themselves isn't a pleasant thought either.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: This trope is likely the reason why Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge don't die in the movie like they did in the books...because the writers felt like they didn't deserve to die. Having said that, they are worse than they are in the books in a few ways. For example, they Speak Ill of the Dead, whereas in the books they at least respected James' parents to look after him, though it was obvious from day one that they hated the boy.
