Injustice 2

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Injustice 2 is a 2017 superhero fighting game by DC and NetherRealm Studios and a follow up to 2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us. It was released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows with a free downloadable app.

The game's prologue shows that Krypton, unlike many other continuities, wasn't destroyed by a natural disaster, but by the robotic alien collector Brainiac. Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El, is put on a rocket by her mother in course to Earth to save Kara from Krypton's destruction, but the explosion knocks Kara's rocket off-course.

The story then jumps decades ahead, after the first game. Batman is rebuilding the Justice League but is finding problems trying to keep the public calm as many of Superman's allies remain at large, and he can't tell the world about his security system, Brother Eye, to keep the advantage of surprise. With Superman imprisoned, however, Gorilla Grodd formed a new group of super-villains.

Brainiac then suddenly arrives after Earth, not just to kill Superman for escaping his genocide, but to destroy Earth as well. Meanwhile, Supergirl has been awoken from her spaceship, but by Black Adam and Wonder Woman, that tell her lies to make her believe Superman is the good guy.

Directed by Ed Boon, that also directed Mortal Kombat X.

Tropes used in Injustice 2 include:
  • Big Bad: Brainiac. Not only he is indirectly responsible for Superman and Kara being separated, and presumably Superman to turn to evil, he was also mind controlling Grodd, having created the Society through him to desestabilize Earth.
  • Cleavage Window: Supergirl's Power Girl costume feature this traditional feature of the character.
  • Downloadable Content: 10 additional characters (6 DC, 4 guests) can be bought with it. Darkseid was a pre-order bonus before the game made him a separate DLC.
  • Downer Ending: If you choose to fight as Superman in the last chapter, he wins the fight with Batman and brainwashes him, takes over the Earth, imprisons Kara, and threatens to brainwash her if she doesn't join him.
  • Earth-Shattering Kaboom: Brainiac did that to Krypton and wants to do the same to Earth.
  • Enemy Mine: The Regime and the Justice League eventually team up to fight Brainiac.
  • Evil Mentor: Wonder Woman and Black Adam mentored Supergirl in how to control and use her powers but are just planning to use her to reestablish Superman's Regime.
  • Forced Into Evil: Deadshot has a bomb on his head planted by Grodd, leaving him with no choice but to help him.
  • Good Counterpart: Though he is mostly indifferent, Swamp Thing is someone with powers over the Green that is well more reasonable than Ivy about protecting vegetal life.
  • Guest Fighter:
  • Legion of Doom: The Society, lead by Gorilla Grodd.
  • Lone Wolf Boss: Atrocitus has nothing to do with Superman, Grodd or Brainiac, and just appears to try to convert Hal into a Red Lantern.
  • Mind Screw: The fear gas causes this on their victims. In gameplay, this turns Scarecrow from an average human being into a monster and is how Joker is into the game at all: he is a hallucination.
  • Multiple Endings: In addition to Multiverse endings, this game uses this trope in Story Mode. You can pick Batman or Superman for the good or bad ending.
  • Palette Swap: The Premiere Skins used for some characters have different dialogue, looks and personalities. They also share the same moveset.
    • Mr. Freeze for Captain Cold.
    • Bizarro for Superman.
    • Black Lightning for Raiden.
    • John Stewart for Hal Jordan.
    • Power Girl for Supergirl.
    • Vixen for Cheetah.
    • Jay Garrick and Reverse Flash for Barry Allen.
  • Pet the Dog: For all of their flaws, the members of the ex-Regime are as concerned about mankind as any of the heroes when Brainiac initiates his destruction of Earth.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Swamp Thing attacks Harley in her chapter because he is too angry to hear about why she damaged his swamp, that wasn't even her direct intention.
  • Reformed but Rejected:
    • Barry Allen was pardoned after helping in taking down the Regime, but most people still treat him like a despot for helping in Superman in establishing and governing over it.
    • The same happens to Hal after he regains his Green Lantern ring, but it lasts very little time as Batman decides he needs to widen his circle of trust.
  • Stealth Pun: Bane, the guy who uses Venom to power himself up, uses the DDT as the finishing move of his super.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Harley to the Justice League. She uses much harsher methods than the other members and has a meaner streak towards super-villains.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The members of the Society are unknowingly helping Brainiac in destroying the Earth, as it turns out Brainiac was giving them false information through Grodd.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Poison Ivy is allied with the Society because she doesn't want Gotham and Metropolis to be fully rebuilt, as she thinks it threatens vegetal life.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Reverse Flash is trapped on the present of the Injustice Universe thanks to the Regime killing one of his ancestors, turning him into a living temporal paradox.
