"Now was that funny or just disgusting? I don't know, I'm asking." —Dog, Oh Yeah! Cartoons

Animated show that relies heavily on ugly animation, displeasing concepts and extreme close-ups of things such as hairy, warty green tongues, stink-line-laden sewage sandwiches, and toilets that haven't been cleaned in a long time.

Pioneered by John Kricfalusi with The Ren and Stimpy Show, this type of show dominated children's animation in the late 1990s. The animation house Klasky-Csupo and the studio Spumco specialized in animation of this style. Many of these clones failed to realize, however, that the success of Ren and Stimpy was also due to excellent writing, not just to the presence of icky, stinky things.

Anime and Manga

• Ippatsu Kikimusume, aka Miss Crisis Moment, is this trope in four-minute chunks. Kunyan survives each life-threatening situation by executing a preposterous escape plan that Crosses the Line Twice, often to the point of Nightmare Fuel. If you watch this, you will be grossed out. You will also learn physics. (Check one out on YouTube if you dare...)
• Kyoufu no Kyochan, a parody of "Obake no Q-taro" written by the comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto, the series is about a kid and his ugly critter (with a strange likeness with Butthead). You better not hurt the kid or Kyochan will grow arms on his head and feet on his mouth to rip off your guts ! Episode 1
• Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt features monsters themed around poop, vomit, boogers, breast milk, and semen.
• Volume 5 of Tactics. There's lots of shit. Literally. There's even a scene where we see child Kantarou taking a shit, and we see the turd coming out of his ass. Was that even necessary?
• Earlier volumes of Pocket Monsters relied on this trope. The series has since lessened though, just becoming a Widget Series.
• There's a... charming series of shorts in Japan known Burutabu-chan AKA "Poop Genie". It's about, well, just read the title. Or watch it.

Film

• Year One. A movie about two cavemen who randomly stumble into the Bible stories, but with numerous disgusting scenes, such as Jack Black eating poop, and Michael Cera peeing all over his face.
• Freddy Got Fingered.
• American Pie does this from time to time, mainly with any scene involving Stifler. In the first movie, he drinks a glass of beer with cum in it. In the second one, he gets peed on. In the third one, he eats dog shit.
• The 2009 film incarnation of Land of the Lost. Rather than being a kid's show as its source was, the film opted to go for a much more "adult" audience with sexual humor throughout. Described by Will Ferrell himself as being more of a parody of the original than an actual remake.
• More or less the whole ouvre of John Waters.
• Shark Tale

• The Trumpet of the Swan
• Pink Flamingos are two groups of people striving to be the filthiest in the world. Enough said.
• The Garbage Pail Kids Movie

• Stand by Me, specifically the part where Gordie tells story about the pie-eating contest where a fat kid gets revenge on bullies by making the whole audience puke.

Literature

• A fictional example: Since the Nightside is inimical to the internet because A.I. Is a Crapshoot and the prevalence of Haunted Technology, Rule 34 applies to television. One particular show -- "The John Waters Celebrity Perversion Hour" -- has had John Taylor hiding behind the sofa like the Daleks were coming.

• The Barf-O-Rama series of children's paperbacks was based on this trope.
• Captain Underpants, a series where just about 95% of the characters, plots, and events have something to do with Toilet Humour.
• The Australian children's novel The Day My Bum Went Psycho (Butt in North America) and its sequels, Zombie Bums from Uranus, and Bumageddon: The Final Pongflict. The titles should be a dead giveaway.

Live Action TV

• Jackass
• Silent Library
• Fear Factor, despite its name, is best known for having contestants eat things like live insects.
• I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! was a Reality Show crossed with this.
• Kenny vs. Spenny rarely avoids this trope, particularly in the humiliation round.
• Laura en América: one episode of this show is infamous for this. Its name was "Lo haría todo por dinero" ("I'd do anything for the money"). People from the public was challenged to do the most disgusting things for money. Among the challenges there were: to stay naked in a bathtub with frogs (US$30), eat a whole habanero-like fruit (US$20), to kiss an unknown person (US$30), dress up like a baby and crawl (US$20). The most memorable part? Lick the armpits and feet of a bodybuilder who had not taken a shower in 48 hours.
• Dick and Dom in da Bungalow nearly got banned for being so gross.
• Wonder Showzen.
• Dirty Jobs, at times.
• Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! is what you get when you make a reduction of Gross-Out Show and cannabis. The 11-minute pan sauce that remains is...unique.
• Kids' show Round the Twist almost got banned for this, including inappropriate' material such as death, nudity (including references to genitalia), underwear, incest (Kissing Under the Influence), mild sex references, and relying on your typical gross-out humor staples.
• Double Dare, a game show built around getting Covered in Gunge.
• You Can't Do That on Television pretty much started the trend on Nickelodeon.

Periodicals

• Many of the comic strips featured in Mad Magazine. Actually, pretty much of anything in Mad; they were doing gross-out humor before it was considered funny.

  • Probably the most infamous of these was 'The Zit'. Drawn by Tom Bunk (go figure), it resulted in a lot of letters to the editor's desk.
  • Its carried over to the cartoon version too.

Tabletop Games

• About the only example of a Tabletop RPG in this genre: Low Life, where among the playable races there are worms, roaches and walking piles of poo.
• FATAL most certainly falls under this category, intentionally or not. In no other Tabletop RPG will you have a need to calculate oriface sizes. Or has detailed rules for rape.
• HOL includes its fair share as part of its parody of high-level hack-and-slash powergaming.

Video Games

• Boogerman: a superhero whose powers all involved farting, belching, and snot-flicking. Oddly enough, his foes were the type Captain Planet tended to fight, the type that polluted the world on purpose.
• Postal 2 features plenty of pissing and vomiting. Three objectives actually require the player character to urinate.
• Limbo of the Lost. It's very surprising to find such a macabre game that, in only its first half-hour of gameplay, throws worms pulled out of ears and snot at you as integral parts of puzzle solving.
• Stupid Invaders, the gross moments are even nastier than Space Goofs
• The Binding of Isaac is very generous with this when not making Biblical references—giant mounds of poop are a common obstacle, there's a boss called Peep who spreads toxic urine everywhere, and pretty much anything involving Isaac's abusive mother is given a Gross Up Close-Up.
• Earthworm Jim contain a level called "Snot A Problem!"

Web Original

• The Angry Video Game Nerd. Mostly, it's just the titular character talking about shit in great detail, but there are plenty of scenes with fake poop and vomit.
• Encyclopedia Dramatica is/was a satire wiki that isn't afraid to delve into Squicky and horrors territory For the Lulz.
• The DeviantArt group OvaryPuncher is specifically for this sort of thing.
• The Homestar Runner animation "In Search of the Yello Dello."
• What The Fuck Is Wrong With You? It's named that way for a reason. (Although similar to AVGN, it's mostly just descriptions.)
• The Cinema Snob usually reviews these.
• Brows Held High is mostly about letting us know about how sick Arthouse films can be.

Western Animation

• The Ren and Stimpy Show, the Trope Maker and Trope Codifier.
• Many entries of Cartoon Network's What a Cartoon series went with that kind of humor. Most of those that were continued as their own series (Powerpuff Girls, Cow and Chicken, I Am Weasel, Courage the Cowardly Dog, etc.) used it at least occasionally.
  • Of these, Cow and Chicken is the best-fitting example.
• Dexter's Laboratory had a handful of examples, from Dexter's chicken pox to Dee Dee's germs getting all over his science lab room.
• Rocko's Modern Life parodies this with Show Within a Show The Fatheads.
• Beavis and Butthead^[context?]
• The Ripping Friends, a Spumco production that was one of the last series animated in the Kricfalusi style.
• Drawn Together^[context?]
• The Brothers Grunt, another unbearably, um... organic cartoon from MTV.
• Invader Zim. Well, it is a Jhonen Vasquez creation...
• The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, especially in the later seasons - contenders include an episode where a zit on Billy's back comes to life, and another where Grim comes down with a sickness that causes him to sneeze snot everywhere.
• SpongeBob SquarePants fits the bill more so from season 5 onwards, where Kafka Komedy and Black Comedy is also a common occurrence.
• The Fairly Oddparents used to occasionally have a nice lesson, but delved more into Gross Up Close-Ups and the like as the seasons progressed.
• This kind of show was parodied on Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog with the one-off Show Within a Show "Bart the Barfy Bumblebee".

• Metalocalypse does this, but with gore.
• Two Stupid Dogs ventured into this fairly often.

• Any Yuckie Duck short on What a Cartoon Show.
• The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack may very well be The Ren and Stimpy Show‍'‍s spiritual successor in this regard.
• Chowder contains elements of this, but thankfully doesn't focus too much on it.
• Schnookums and Meat is a Disney series that tried to follow in The Ren and Stimpy Show‍'‍s footsteps, but is best remembered in certain circles for its tie-in product, a canned pasta that was labeled with the disclaimer "does not contain meat".
• Mega Babies. There's nothing wrong with this cartoon if you don't mind the gratuitous amounts of shitting, vomiting, and prolonged nose picking. The sad part is that it's by the creators behind Swat Kats.
• Rugrats sometimes ventures into this.
• Total Drama Island had enough examples for Cartoon Network to run a marathon of it called "Total Drama All-Out Gross-Out".

• South Park is definitely this, though how much it relies on it is often overestimated by its detractors.

• Ugly Americans is definitely not for viewers with weak stomachs.
• Some of KaBlam!‍'‍s Life with Loopy falls under this.
  • Henry and June venture here on some occasions.
• The Angry Beavers: In Season 1, Episode 9 Part 1: "Stinky Toe", Norbert gets a toe infection with no known cure. At the end of the episode, Norbert's brother Daggett comes down with a strange illness called "Gunky Ear".
• Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy would venture into this occasionally, most noticeably with Ed:

Edd: Oh my...Ed, there's a new invention called soap. Have you heard of it?!

• Yvon of the Yukon: A Canadian show about a fat, unhygenic French man who runs around in his unchanged underwear... in the middle of the Yukon. The jokes tend to revolve around farting and urinating.

• Fish Hooks, especially concerning large (to the completely normal-sized fish) monsters. Another Disney example, like Schnookums and Meat.
