The booms in space in Star Wars are completely cynical. Alan Dean Foster worked with Lucas on the original Star Wars (episode "4") and pointed out that explosions do not go boom in space. Lucas said he knew it, but "there's a lot of money tied up in this film and people expect to hear a boom when something blows up, so I'll give them the boom."." Foster told this story when he was on a panel at a convention, saying he would never work with Lucas again.
