Doom Day
What if... Doom invaded Real Life? Now that'd be a problem. Unless the ones facing the refugees from Doom land were two Doom fans.
Enter Tennie and Hertog Jan, whose boring afternoon was interrupted by a Space Marine game of Capture the Flag!
This is the premise behind Doom Day - and, needless to say, Hilarity Ensues.
For Doom fans, this fan-made short film is a must-see.
Tropes used in Doom Day include:
- Acceptable Breaks From Reality: we can say that this short predated Scott Pilgrim vs. the World in terms of "video game-style fights in real life". For starters, the duo's speech is shown through Doom-style chat.
- Announcer Chatter: provides roughly ninety percent of the spoken dialogue.
- Ax Crazy: let's just say that, once they get their hands on it, Tennie and Hertog Jan enjoy the original BFG a bit too much.
- Non Sequitur Scene: after the Red Team starts hunting down HJ, there's a Space Marine trying to catch up with his comrades, only to randomly explode.
- Bloodless Carnage: zig-zagged. Tennie and Hertog Jan don't bleed, while the people from the game do.
- Bolivian Army Downer Ending: Played for Laughs.
- Comedic Sociopathy: the first thing Hertog Jan does when he sees Tennie in "Doom-vision"? He starts punching him.
- Failed a Spot Check/Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Hertog Jan. Seriously, how can you not notice noisy Doom enemies roaming down the street, outside of your window?
- Genre Savvy: sure, Doom characters, invade the same town where two fans of the game live. It takes a while, but the protagonists' skills at Doom turn into a pretty high level of Genre Savviness soon enough.
- Wrong Genre Savvy: ... until they run out of ammo, that is.
- How Do I Shot Web?: it takes a while before the duo gets a hang on the whole "Real Life Doom" thing.
- Idiot Ball: um... Tennie? HJ? There are other weapons aside from the BFG in your inventory, you know. You were browsing through them less than a minute ago.
- Mythology Gag: before the final stand, Hertog Jan's "puzzled expression" is lifted straight from the Doomguy. However, the whole thing is Reference Overdosed.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Tennie got the crap beaten out of him... twice.
- Painting the Fourth Wall: let's just say the Doom interface is just the tip of the iceberg.
- Pragmatic Adaptation: the Announcer Chatter voice is borrowed from Unreal Tournament.
- Precision F-Strike: "Fuck no ammo :c"
- Pun-Based Title: heh heh... Doom Day... doomsday... get it?
- Punch-Punch-Punch Uh-Oh: after taking out some Space Marines, Tennie realises the last one of them has God Mode on.
- Reference Overdosed: towards the Doom franchise.
- The Scapegoat: Hertog Jan. To clarify, when he escapes with the Red Flag, Tennie just sits on a bench, shrugs it off, and points at his friend when an entire army of Red Space Marines starts chasing him down.
- Space Marine: comes with the territory, but as a twist, due to the protagonists being Tennie and HJ, the marines take a villainous role this time.
- Sprite Polygon Mix: more like Sprite Real Life Mix.
- Too Much Information: Tennie is introduced by coming out of the bathroom. It wouldn't bad enough by itself if it wasn't for the pretty explicit sound effects heard from said bathroom.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: as their fictional selves within the short film at least, HJ and Tennie are heavily implied to be this.
- What Happened To The Doom Monsters Anyway: the answer? They're still out there.
- You Suck: the Announcer Chatter's remark about HJ and Tennie getting "killed" by the Red Team.
