Doom-Mates (web comic)

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

A web comic created by Zeke Freek. It follows the misadventures of 17-year old Nen Sigma, who one day just popped into existence. The world he lives in is strange, it has magical items with special powers, monsters and just generally wacky stuff. Nen lives on the second floor of an apartment complex in Room #666 with his roommate, Corosua "Corey" Mahalo, A Sentient Plant with a tragic past, Phuhk, a strange creature named Dolom and Fawkes, an Android. Also, Rykk, Corey's co-worker and Lenny, a 12-year old boy that stays with them when his parents are away.

Doom-Mates appears to have vanished completely off the web a year or so after the fork which created All The Tropes. No link was provided in the original article which came from TV Tropes, so it is impossible to determine if it was archived by the Wayback Machine.

Tropes used in Doom-Mates (web comic) include:
  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Rykk has trained his body to be immune to poison by administering non-lethal doses frequently over the course of his life.
  • Asexual: Corey, which is part of the reason he dumped Lanai.
  • Battle Aura: Present.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Page Six. All the way. Corey gets a package, sent from a mysterious entity (implied to be the creator of the comic himself), the package contained a new character, Fawkes, as an apology for putting them on Hiatus.
    • Well, Corey was just reading the note outloud. Nen's response could either be interpreted as Breaking the 4th Wall, or just responding sarcastically. So I guess it's up for debate.
      • Fawkes acknowledged his presence in a webcomic.
  • Brilliant but Lazy: Nen. Corey too, sometimes.
    • Zeke Freek himself. It's been 2 months and we've already had 3 hiatuses.
  • Bi the Way: Nen is Bisexual.
  • Character Title: Yes.
    • Actually, that was a placeholder name. He seems to have settled on "Doom-Mates" as the permanent title. So, Averted.
  • Chew Toy: Lenny, to some degree.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Implied that Lanai was this to Corey back when they were dating.
  • Crazy Prepared: Rykk is always preparing for the End of the World. Including a nice Boondocks reference when he shows Corey his basement, which is full of Green Beans and Cheerios (spelled "Chi-Ri-ohs).
  • Equippable Ally: Phuhk is a nice example of this trope.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: For the last time, Phuhk is pronounced exactly how you think it is. As was lamp-shaded.
  • Expy: Lenny is 12 years old, and looks a lot like Gon Freeces from Hunter X Hunter.
    • Even has the same birthday, May 5th.
  • Keet: Nen, most of the time.
    • Try ALL of the time.
  • Knife Nut: Rykk collects knives.
  • Powers as Programs: There's an app on the yPod that stores special powers the owner has.
  • Off-Model: The artwork can barely be called as such, it's basically notebook sketch quality and as such this does happen sometimes.
  • Shout-Out: To JC Penny's. With the clever pun, "CJ Nickel's".
    • yPod? Hello?
      • Also, Corey works at a Pawn Shop with a Star for a logo. Pawn Stars anybody?
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: Fawkes. He grew from a small Android into his adult form, he eats and sleeps (he refers to it as 'recharging') and feels emotions.
  • Rock-Paper-Scissors: Played a lot for various reasons.
  • Snarky Non-Human Sidekick: Dolom. Who is a... big worm with a beak... no kiddin'.
    • Even more snarky is Phuhk, the sentient plant. Although he was once human.
  • Useless Superpowers: A stopwatch that gives you Jet-lag... ooh, scary...
