Deadpool (film)/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: After the failure of Fant4stic and its troubled production and its R rating, many people expected it to flop. There was also general scepticism about mixing super-heroes with R-rated violence in general, thanks to failures like the Punisher movies beforehand, to the point some fans were resigned to the fact the movie was going to be rated PG-13.
  • Author's Saving Throw: The movie made Deadpool much more faithful to the comics.
  • Complete Monster: Ajax Francis proves to be a surprisingly serious villain for the darkly comedic film. The leader of an operation that purports to create superheroes, Ajax Francis uses his recruiter to lure in people with nothing to lose before he implants the potential for mutant genetics into them. However, to awaken the mutant gene, Ajax Francis subjects them to hideous, around-the-clock torture to produce the necessary stress to awaken it. Wade Wilson himself is eventually placed in a chamber that alters air levels to always make him feel that he is asphyxiating. After this awakens Wade's mutant gene, Ajax Francis comments he could fix Wade's ruined looks, but mocks that would be no fun and shuts him back in the device anyways. When Wade escapes, Ajax Francis impales him and leaves him to burn alive in the ruins of the lab, along with any other prisoners remaining. The superhero operation is also revealed to be a front: the victims are fitted with collars to turn them into slaves and sold to the highest bidder for the remainder of their lives. When Wade, now Deadpool, is hunting him, Ajax Francis tries to lure him out by kidnapping his former girlfriend Vanessa and then locking her in the asphyxiation device right in front of Wade.
  • Fan Dumb: A portion of supposed Deadpool fans online only knew him from a small handful of pages that were posted on social media sites. These pages were cherry-picked as the most touching, the most heroic, or the most inoffensively hilarious (the better to score upvotes and reblogs with). Needless to say, when the trailers (and the movie) hit with Deadpool in all his irreverent, psychotic, blatantly offensive glory, these "fans" lost it and started screaming "That's not Deadpool! That guy's a jerk!"
  • First Installment Wins: Some prefer this over the second film due to the simpler plot and emphasis on humor.
  • Fountain of Memes: As expected, Deadpool is highly quotable.
  • Funny Aneurysm Moment: This 2016 film has a George Michael song. He died later that year.
  • Genre Turning Point: The film's success resulted in more adult oriented superhero/comic book films being made such as Logan, The Suicide Squad, Zack Snyder's Justice League and Joker.
  • Signature Song: “X Gonna Give It To Ya” by the late DMX.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: For a low budget, Colossus looks so lifelike and Deadpool's expressive eyes are funny to watch.
  • What Do You Mean It's Not for Kids?: While not the first superhero film to have an R rating, it has sexual content, graphic violence (not to mention Wade’s hideous face) and strong language throughout.
