While there were political cartoons in newspapers before the 1890s, this was the decade when the first of what modern readers would consider to be Newspaper Comics first appeared.

The Yellow Kid (February 17, 1895 - January 23, 1898) is the Ur Example of Newspaper Comics, with The Little Bears (June 2, 1895 - June 7, 1897) coming a close second. The Katzenjammer Kids is the Ur Example of a Newspaper Comics Long Runner, having been published from 1897 to 2006 before going into reruns.
