• In book 7, the monk Sanjaya preaches doubt. His main tenets are, "Do not believe people. Do not believe society... Do not believe the weather reports. Do not believe the Yankees will ever win the playoffs."
  • Sanjaya also breaks with the storyline to speak to the mangaka, Osamu Tezuka, declaring, "I don't believe a single word of this stupid manga!...Who knows, the author might be a rotten pumpkin!" Tezuka(with a pumpkin for a head): "He's right...Sorry folks, I didn't mean to fool you. I am a rotten pumpkin!"
