Blondes Are Witches

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Blondes have been made out to be dumb; blondes have been made out to be evil. In recent years, it has also become increasingly common for witches (or magical women in general) to be blonde in works, regardless if they are good or evil. Even in works where magic users are shown to come with diverse hair colors, the prominent ones tend to be blondes.

As you will see, it is mostly a trope for live-action television. While neither being blond or having supernatural powers is gender-specific by itself, this trope usually concerns female characters.

Examples of Blondes Are Witches include:

Anime and Manga

  • In an unusual Eastern example, Sailor Moon. While the show concerns a whole plethora of magical girls, it is noteworthy that blondes tend to have positions of power within the show. Aside from Sailor Moon herself, Sailor Venus and Sailor Uranus are the leaders of the Inner Senshi and Outer Senshi, respectively.
  • On Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch, the pink mermaids, including the heroine, Lucia, are given blonde hair, despite the other mermaids having their signature color serve as their hair color, Naturally, the yellow mermaids are also blonde. Aqua Regina, the guardian of the sea itself, is also a blonde.
    • Lucia's blond hair could be a pun on her name meaning light (she is also named after St. Lucia, who is often portrayed as a mermaid in art)
  • Witch Hunter Robin features a blonde witch as its heroine
  • Sally the Witch does, too, having been based on Bewitched. The remake surprisingly averts this by making Sally brunette.
  • Beatrice from Umineko no Naku Koro ni is a magical blonde.
  • Dragon Ball gives us a rare male example, as the Saiyans' hair becomes golden after they power up.

Film

Live Action TV

  • Bewitched; well, Samantha (the main character), Tabitha and Aunt Clara, at least.
    • The spin-off, Tabitha, also gave us Aunt Minerva, as well as the titular heroine.
  • I Dream of Jeannie: Most of the genies on the show had dark hair, but blond Jeannie was still the star of the show.
  • On Passions, resident Wicked Witch Tabitha, and later her daughter, Endora. Both of Tabitha's magical dolls, Timmy and Cracked Connie, were blonde too.
    • Charity, a human girl who could control the powers of good, was also blond.
    • Tabitha's nemesis, Esmeralda, a good witch, was also blond.
  • On Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Sabrina and her two aunts were blondes. Sabrina's paternal grandmother, Great-Aunt Irma and stepmother (also a witch), as well as a few cousins, were also blondes. Ironically, Sabrina seems to have gotten her hair from her mortal mother.
  • On Dark Shadows, Angelique, the only witch on the show to be a major character, was a blonde.
    • Ironically, Angelique's actress, Lara Parker, previously played a brunet witch on Kolchak the Night Stalker.
    • Laura Collins, a Phoenix (who in the show were portrayed as immortal humans with fire powers, rather than firebirds), was also a blonde.
  • The short-lived Fantastic Comedy Free Spirit also had a blond witch, Winnie Goodwin, for its main character
  • Buffy Summers, Tara, Anya and Amy. Of the group, Buffy is not exactly a witch, but still a supernatural being, and is the main character.
  • Amanda Tucker from Tucker's Witch.

Theatre

  • Wicked infamously portrays Glinda as a blonde, even though the original Oz books and the 1939 film both portray her as a redhead.

Video Games

  • Marisa Kirisame and Alice Margatroid are the primary blond witches of the Touhou series.
