Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Here. An adult/sex game taking place in Bete Noire from the comic Fallen Angel where characters are brought by the city itself and affected by the city's sin, causing them to sin themselves after a period of time. A difference from other sex games is that they are not forced to have sex and can really do any sin that would be most appropriate for their character.

Tropes used in Bete Noire include:
  • A Father to His Men: Gibbs to Delta.
  • Alien Invasion: The blue catfish aliens from Stargate Universe.
  • Anyone Can Die: Even NPCs aren't immune.
  • Badass Army / Badass Crew: The entire cast of the game.
  • Badass Normal: Almost the entire cast without magical powers.
  • Blessed with Suck: Sefton lives this trope. His power is to attract people with touch and he can't control it, meaning if somebody touches him, they start to like him. He uses this to good use (kind of) against Noah and has accidentally used it on numerous people.
    • The werewolf pack's "puppy radar" falls under this as well. It's only useful for knowing where others in the pack are or if they're doing okay or not. Feeling a packmember's death is stated to be like having something missing and multiple additions to the pack in a short period of time is known to cause large amounts of crazy. Note that not all packmembers can sense others (Dominic) or multiple packmembers (Flemming).
    • There's also John Boyd's cannibalism. While eating human flesh does make him stronger and heal wounds quicker than the average human, he isn't a cannibal by choice and forces himself to not eat. Problem is that his intelligence goes down the drain when hungry and since he's a cannibal, he cannot eat other types of meat or edible food due to it making him physically ill.
  • Broken Base: A few people have a problem with the NPC of Dolf, the elderly bartender of Furor's. He's actually Adolf Hitler. Others have no problem with him being in game as he's from Fallen Angel, the comic series the game is based off of.
  • Came Back Wrong: Everybody who got stabbed by the zombie making blades. Said outright when Rush's puppy radar went haywire about Dominic.
  • The Chessmaster: Bruce Wayne, Ba'al, Eddie.
    • OOCly, Mara.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Everett Young. If somebody he's adopted into his crew or random people he meets on the street is in need of saving or he thinks is in need of saving, he will go and do so, usually to the point where he causes harm to himself.
    • Tony Stark's the same way and if he can't save the person, he beats himself up about it. He's also more harmful to himself as his suit's poisoning him, but he doesn't care as long as he saved people first.
    • Can't forget about Bruce Wayne. He lives and breathes this trope to the point where the rest of the Gothamites that work with him have to find ways to make sure he can't run off to do his hero thing.
  • Crack Pairing: Ba'al/Young. It makes sense in context.

  • Crossover Ship: Multiple ones.
    • Benjamin/Tony Stark to the point where players have started joking that they should get married.
      • Tony's the bride, Delta's the groom, and Gibbs is the dad with the shotgun.
    • Tony Hill/Rachel Conway, which resulted in the first wedding in game.

    • Jim Kirk/Aimery
    • Tyki Mikk/Tony Stark

  • Crowning Moment of Awesome: Numerous ones, considering the number of epic events (and not so epic events) that tend to happen.
    • The chase log between Dominic and Jace.
    • Gibbs' sniper battle with Jace.
      • Hell, everything having to do with Jace's killing spree.
    • Delta learning to use multiple imprints to defeat a shark and octopus that attacked the hostel during the flood.
    • The rescue attempt on the catfish aliens' ship.
    • The last battle between Bete Noire and Yellow Springs.
  • Crowning Moment of Funny: Surprisingly, there are quite a few of these too.
    • Rachel Conway telling the Magistrate about the zombies. And threatening to haunt him if she dies.
      • Really, any time Rachel snarks at the Magistrate counts as this.
    • Kailani believing the hostel's electricity comes from a mage Delta keeps locked up in the basement.
      • And her thinking that kittens are trying to eat her.
    • Nate's wish for a princess to kidnap and a prince to rescue her. Things got mixed up in the wishing and now Sefton's the princess (complete with magical tiara and pink princess shirt) while River Tam's his prince. Add an oddly sane John Boyd into the mix and you get epic hilarity.
  • Death Is a Slap on The Wrist: If the city likes you. If it doesn't, you stay dead.
  • Death Takes a Holiday: Uh guys, we kinda broke death.
    • Not only is death broken for Bete Noire, but it's stated by Mara that death in the entire multiverse is broken, meaning that nobody can die in any canon universe. So far, only one person has run with this, but if personifications of Death get apped, it might get played with more.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Nicki Rush to Nicholas Rush.
  • Dysfunction Junction: Pretty much everybody. Most notably with Bruce Wayne.
    • You can't forget the unexpected canon baby plot with TJ and Young.
    • Or all the times Rush has descended into insanity.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Nate Silverman's real first name is Admiral.
    • Pasha's real first name is Polina.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: Time for the Biblical apocalypse, boys and girls!
  • Everything's Even Worse with Sharks
  • Fate Worse Than Death: A number of the more antagonistic characters in Bete Noire find death to be more of a last resort with people they don't like.
    • Jace is having fun with this one during the wish event. Since he can't kill them, he's decided to mess with his victims emotionally. So far, he's grabbed Tony Stark and made him choose between a knife to the throat or drowning so he can "become a new man," found Nicholas Rush and drowned him after fighting him and plucking a feather from his bitty wings, then having William Flemming fall into a trap by using a still drowning Rush as bait.
  • Father, I Want to Marry My Brother: River to Simon. Made more amusing than creepy when Aimery mistakes Simon for River's husband, and nobody corrects him.
  • Fish Out of Temporal Water: Lot of cases of this, most extreme being Gabriel Belmont, Aimery, Tyki, Kanda, and Boyd.
    • Also, to a lesser degree, the cast of Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes.
    • Don't forget Kailani, who hails from a D&D-based world.
  • Five-Man Band: There are a few of them in the city, what with there being different groups, but Delta wins for being a walking Five-Man Band.
  • The Fool: Claire Novak. Do not under any circumstances give this girl a gun or for that matter let her outdoors.
  • Freak-Out: Lance. His heroin addiction, on top of killing his zombiefied!daddy and suppressed pre-game trauma, caused him to snap and beat Dani Reese into a coma. He then spent a week in near-seclusion, quitting cold turkey, before turning himself in to the police.
  • Gentleman Snarker: Aimery le Gode.
    • Simon Tam commonly communicates exclusively in snark.
  • The Great Flood: Thanks for praying to God for help, Magistrate.
  • Hey, It's That Voice!: Poor Gabriel Belmont, having the same voice as Nicholas Rush and Delta
  • Humongous Mecha: Big Boss had Nicholas Rush and William Flemming build Metal Gear, more specifically KODOQUE, the one Flemming builds in his canon. Rush is starting to build Metal Gear RAY on his own. Luckily for the entire city, RAY can't be armed with nukes.
  • Identical Stranger: Benjamin/Delta and Nicholas Rush. Both have the PB of Robert Carlyle and it has become a running gag in game for people who know Benjamin to think Rush is him, usually with hilarious results. It's gotten to the point where Rush doesn't even correct them and just lets people believe he's Delta's twenty-first personality.
    • Laurence Dominic and Nate Silverman have the same problem, but it's Reed Diamond instead of Robert Carlyle.
    • Original Character Zachary Finch happens to share the same PB as Arthur. Shame Zachary's blind.
    • And now we've got Lieutenant Malcolm Reed and Thomas Hawkins, both with the PB of Dominic Keating. Thomas happened to take this in stride and promptly started flirting with his lookalike. Reed, on the other hand, wants nothing to do with Thomas besides punch his face in.
    • Claire Novak shares the same PB as Elle Bishop
  • If We Get Through This: Who didn't say this during the zombie attack?
    • Or the catfish alien invasion and the rescue attempt.
    • Don't forget about the time with the werewolves invading.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Flemming.
  • Instant Awesome, Just Add Dragons: Lance and his dragons, Kailani and her zombie wyverns. Nate's real form is a dragon, but he's more adorable than awesome.
  • It Got Worse: Plot arc 1 was basically "how could things get any worse from here and yet be incredibly awesome?"
    • Now It's time for the apocalypse.
  • I Will Protect Her: Adam and Ba'al, despite both being villains, seem to display this towards Inara.
    • Simon and River.
    • Tony and his PAs.
    • Anna Milton and Alba. Also Anna and Castiel. Cas is the girl of course.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Everybody originally thought Young and Nicki Rush were married. Nicholas Rush eventually states this about the two in a network post.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Ba'al and Tyki, hands down.
  • Mauve Shirt: Aimery. Sorry about that flaming sword to the chest. At least you survived it kind of?
  • Memetic Mutation: BLACK HOLE OF DRAMA
    • Rush's five boyfriends.

    • Nicki and her genius mako sharks.
    • Tyki's weakness is cupcakes
      • And people petting his hair.
    • Tyki's Berserk Button is Noah.
      • He has tea parties with Noah's corpse.
      • Don't forget the camping trips! Smells a little funny though.
    • A canon example, Daniel Jackson's deaths.
      • Rush is actually keeping track in game and asks if he's died recently if they haven't talked in a while.
        • According to Daniel's player, he's getting revenge by setting up a betting pool on when Rush goes crazy next.
  • No Name Given: Sefton Lowell is known by a number of nicknames like "the blue-haired werewolf kid," "Beem," and "Hey You." His full name is eventually given on a list of the city's "favorites" during the zombie invasion and he tells his first name to Chief of Police Sam Tyler.
    • He also gave it to Benjamin during the sincerity week.
    • And to Remus, Sam Tyler, Aimery and Eddie during the Trucktrap.
      • Remus then accidentally outed him in a public post, though not many people seemed to notice.
  • Non-Player Character: The Magistrate, Benny, the Hierarchy representatives (besides Annie and Eli, they became PCs after being apped), Agniezska, Bailey, Eve, Noah (yes, that Noah), and our new Magistrate Margaret.
  • Oblivious to Love: Nicholas Rush towards William Flemming. It was getting to the point where Flemming needed a clue by four to hit Nick upside the head to get him to realize it.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Sefton Lowell (see No Name Given).
    • One would think Nicki Rush falls under this trope, but no, her given name really is Nicki.
    • Slightly stealthy version of this is Nate Silverman. His full first name is Nathaniel, but isn't used on the taken list or in game.
      • According to his player, with titles and ranks his full name is Creator of the World and Elemental of Fire, Doctor Commander-Admiral Nathaniel Jason Adam Silverman II. You can see why he just goes by Dr. Nate Silverman whenever possible.
    • OOCly, Kailani and Nate are known as fishstick and gweeper to the point where their player has to sometimes look up their actual names because she's forgotten them.
  • Original Generation: From original universes, we've got magnet boy Sefton Lowell, the eunuch Aimery le Gode from the early 1200's, the necromancer fishgirl Kailani Konane, and shapeshifting dragon Nate Silverman. In the way of fandom OCs, we've got Delta/Benjamin/etc. from Dollhouse, Ava Lockhart from Heroes (she had visions when she got ill as a child), and Rachel Conway from Heroes (she can control her shadow and snark with the best of them).
  • Our Angels Are Different: Pretty much every angel including the NPC flock.
  • Polyamory: I'm looking at you, Young.
    • Same to you, Ba'al.
    • Nicholas Rush is a rather ninja version of this trope.
  • Rape and Switch: Tony Stark.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The werewolf pack.
  • Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies: End of the last arc, including a large number of PCs and major NPCs.
  • Satan Is Good: God and him are having some creative differences.
  • Serial Killer: Say hello to Jace, one of Delta's imprints and the only one that happened to be a real person. And a serial killer that went after gay men, especially ones who tried to pretend they were straight men. You can guess what he did as soon as he gained control when Benjamin wasn't around.
    • According to Mara, Jace is coming back out at some point.
    • And he's back thanks to the wish event.
      • With all of the imprints.
  • Tag-Team Suicide: Ba'al and Rush decide to do this to each other after Young died in an attempt to kill Noah.
  • Tower of Babel / Curse of Babel: The Tower actually exists in the third city of power, Babylon a.k.a. the City of Light, and Word of God is that that a future event will have all languages exist in Bete Noire, causing epic confusion among the characters.
  • Translator Microbes: Different languages just don't exist in Bete Noire. Except for alien ones. So everybody's able to understand each other. Even sign language is translated.
  • True Companions: Quite a few, actually. Most notably the Firefly cast, most of the Batman crew, Lance and his dragons, and Rush and Young with their two not!sons, Eli Wallace and Sefton Lowell.
  • Waif Fu: River and Needy both fit, though justified in that River is a government experiment gone rogue, and Needy has being bitten by a succubus to blame.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Anna Milton
  • What Could Possibly Go Wrong?: Really, what could go wrong over killing the guy in charge of the City of Death?
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: It really sucked to be Rush when that flood came around thanks to his almost paralyzing hydrophobia.
    • Tyki and Dominic learned to hate snakes when they were zombies.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: The end of the last plot was the inhabitants of Yellow Springs a.k.a. the City of Death invading Bete Noire. The citizens of Yellow Springs? Happen to be all of the dead in the multiverse and are rotting zombies.
