• Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: Whenever Katara, Sokka, and Zuko play as children.
• Fan-Preferred Couple: Averted. Katara and Zuko see each other as brother and sister.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: Zuko favors using preexisting fire sources. In the story, this is just an aspect of his heavily waterbending-influenced bending style. But consider the way firebending works in the movie.
• I Knew It!!: Before the Southern Raiders was broadcast, the author correctly guessed that Kya's death was a result of the Fire Nation learning about the search for a waterbending teacher for Katara.
• Jerkass Woobie: Fire Lord Azulon, of all people. He's a bastard to Ozai, though the man deserves it, and is dismissive about Azula, who he thinks is his last surviving grandchild. But the centenarian Fire Lord is going senile, not even able to make it through one war meeting without losing track of his thoughts.
• Nightmare Fuel: Half-remembered memories of Azula are this for Zuko. It remains to be seen if Azula actually deserves his fear and loathing for whatever happened in the past. But then again, this is Azula we're talking about.
