A Certain Magical Index/Characters/Roman Catholic Church
The Roman Catholic Church as portrayed in this series, as well as the characters associated with them. It is the largest faction in the Magic Side, consisting of 2 billion followers worldwide.
Please note that the author has taken several liberties in portraying the religion (to the point where the anime calls it "Roman Orthodox" instead of Roman Catholic), and is in no way meant to resemble the actual faith accurately.
The Pope
Pope Matthai Reese
Voiced by: Masafumi Kimura |
The current Pope of The Roman Catholic Chuch and head of the Vatican. While he appears to be in complete control, he's something of a puppet to Fiamma of the Right. That said, he's not fully content to play second fiddle...
- And I Must Scream / Fate Worse Than Death: What he tried to do to Fiamma of the Right after Fiamma told him his plan. Key word being tried.
- Badass Beard
- Cool Old Guy: Despite being the Pope, he still believes in the greater good -- trying to save lives, even at the risk of the Roman Catholic Church completely losing its ground to the Anglican Church.
- Corrupt Church: A reasonable leader who unfortunately has to control minions whose actions at times are...questionable, to say the least.
- Heroic Sacrifice: While he doesn't die from the blow, he does save Vatican City and a large majority of Rome from Fiamma's attack.
- Expy: Artist notes indicate that his appearance is based on Gandalf
- The Pope: ...Pretty obvious, this one.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Ironically, he is the only good and the most sane and reasonable leader of all the magic factions. And most of what he does, like investigating Touma, are for the safety of the church. Thank God he's in charge compared to his subordinates.
- Somewhat subverted. He is ultimately Fiamma's puppet; it's he who has the most power within the Church, that is until he attacks the Vatican.
- Unwitting Pawn: To Fiamma.
- You're Insane!: To Fiamma of the Right at the end of Volume 16, after he tells the Pope his plan. Fiamma's response? Destroying St. Peter's Basilica.

Orsola Aquinas
Voiced by: Aya Endo |
A Roman Catholic Nun who is known for preaching in three different non-catholic countries which lead to a Church named after her being built in Japan. She is also skilled in decoding magical texts and at the start of the Orsola Aquinas Rescue Arc, she is kidnapped by the the Amakusa Church. - Hair of Gold
- Informed Ability: Her skill at converting people.
- The Messiah: Rivals Touma in sheer unselfish kind-heartedness.

- Nice Girl
- Odd Friendship: She gets along quite well with Sherry Cromwell.
- Shaggy Dog Story: Turns out she was never able to decode the book all along and was being hunted for nothing.
- She Knows Too Much: Her attempts to decode and destroy the book of law is what got her nearly killed.
- Shower of Awkward: Touma walks in on her in the shower during their stay in Italy
- Too Good for This Sinful Earth: She had no hate against the nuns sent to kill her and felt sorry for them despite how harshly they treated her. Luckily she lives.

- Verbal Tic: Uses "De Gozaimasu" in virtually every sentence.
Agnese Sanctis
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya |
A Roman Catholic Nun in charge of a large battalion of warrior nuns. She came to Japan to rescue Orsola Aquinas and ensure that the Book of Law is not read. In truth, she had no plans to save Orsola and intended to execute her in Japan because of the secrets she learns from the Book of Law. She makes a Heel Face Turn during the La Regina del Mare Adriatico arc, and is now under the care of Necessarius, along with her forces. During New Testament, she and her forces go back to the Roman Catholic Church.
- Anime Hair: Multiple braids that bear a striking resemblance to dreadlocks from a distance.
- Cute and Psycho: Innocent Fanservice Girl --> psycho religious nut. It's the second time Rie Kugimiya played a character with this trait.
- Dangerously-Short Skirt
- Fiery Redhead
- Freudian Excuse: Her parents died when she was young, and she spent her childhood living on the streets. She became dedicated to the Roman Catholic Church for saving them from this fate.
- Frickin' Laser Beams: She is the focus for the Fish of the Supper, the spell used by the Roman Catholic Church to defeat a Magic God. Fueled by the combined power of the Church's two billion believers, it manifests as a laser that passes through any cover and is so powerful that it breaks Touma's arm if he tries to negate it.
- Gratuitous Italian: The chant for her Lotus Wand.
"Tutto paragone. Il quinto dei elementi. Ordina la canna che mostra pace ed ordina. Prima. Segua la legge di Dio ed una croce. Due Cose diverse sono connesse." |
- Heel Face Turn: Makes a big improvement following Volume 11.
- Hidden Heart of Gold: She actually cares for her forces, specifically Lucia and Angelene.
- Holier Than Thou: At first, she barely considers non-Catholics human.
- Knight Templar
- Lady of War: In the making.
- MacGuffin Girl: She is needed by Biagio Busoni to activate the Rosario of the Time Limit spell. Later on, she acts as the Church's "breaker" for the Fish of the Supper (meaning she's needed to stop the spell from being turned against them by an opponent).
- Magic Wand: Her lotus staff lets her strike at any target through the ether.
- The Napoleon: It's kinda of obvious, just look at the size of her platform shoes.
- Naughty Nuns: First of all, during the Orsola Aquinas rescue arc, Touma wakes up to find her only in her underwear sleeping on top of him. See also Power Perversion Potential below.
- Nun-Too-Holy
- Power Perversion Potential: In Volume 18, she abuses her wand's ability to attack through the ether by... hitting a Knight of England in, uh, sensitive places.
- Spell My Name with an "S": Anieze or Agnese?
- Street Urchin: Before the church saved her.
- Torture Technician: She and the rest of her forces beat Orsola brutally for her perceived crimes.
- Voodoo Doll: Her Lotus Wand functions similarly to one. For example, if she hits the staff, it strikes the opponent with an invisible blunt force.
- Warrior Nun
Agnese Forces
Two hundred fifty magic and combat-trained nuns under the command of Agnese Sanctis. After the La Regina del Mare Adriatico arc, they are assimilated under the care of Necessarius.
Lucia
Voiced by: Mariya Ise |
One of the nuns of the Agnese forces. Her weapon is a giant carriage wheel derived from the execution of Saint Catherine of Alexandria which creates a storm of wooden stakes. She is often seen with Angelene.
- Buxom Is Better: Among the Agnese forces, she's said to be the only one whose breasts can rival Kaori's and Sherry Cromwell's in cosplay.
- Celibate Hero: One of the few nuns in this series who actually follows her vow of celibacy.
- Cute and Psycho: She's not that a bad a person, but before her Heel Face Turn, she attacked Touma because a non-Catholic (Touma) touched her.
- Freudian Excuse
- Flechette Storm: Her wheel explodes on enemies and rains shrapnel on them, then it recovers the lost shrapnel.
- Improbable Weapon User: I repeat, a carriage wheel.
- Weapon of Choice
- Hair of Gold
- Heel Face Turn: With the rest of the Agnese forces after realizing that the Roman Catholic Church plans to use them as a scapegoat for the attack of the Adriatic Fleet on Venice.

- The Straight Man: To Angelene's antics.
- Tsurime Eyes
- Warrior Nun
- Zettai Ryouiki
Angelene
Voiced by: Azusa Kataoka |

- A-Cup Angst
- Big Eater: Although not as bad as Index.
- Braids of Action
- Dojikko: Which may be why Lucia is overprotective of her.
- Money to Throw Away: Her Weapon of Choice.
- No Sense of Personal Space
- Not a Morning Person
- Nun-Too-Holy: She's flips Lucia's skirt like how Saten flips Uiharu's, and is overly concerned about her breast size.

- Sweet Tooth
- Token Loli
- Warrior Nun
Ridovia Lorenzetti
Voiced by: Rei Sakuma |
A Roman Catholic radical, she hired Oriana Thomson and stole the "Croce di Pietro" in a bid to use its power to convert the whole of Academy City into Roman Catholics. Following Oriana's defeat, she was promptly schooled by Laura Stuart aboard a private jet while trying to make her getaway. She is currently in the custody of the Anglican Church and Necessarius.
- Axe Crazy: Holy shit she is...
- Big Bad: Of the Daihaseisai arc.
- Didn't See That Coming: Her master plan would have worked... if it weren't for Academy City's fireworks celebration.
- Freudian Excuse
- Hair of Gold
- Holier Than Thou
- Kansas City Shuffle: Hiring Oriana Thompson to invade Adademy City was just a distraction so she could use the real spell far away from the city with no one to stop her.
- Knight Templar
- Manipulative Bitch
- The Messiah: Sees herself as this.
- Nun-Too-Holy
- Soulsaving Crusader
- Villainous Breakdown: Oddly enough...she actually seems to love her own psychotic episodes. Apparently, whenever she has one of these, it means the challenge before her is near impossible. Meaning, the greater the victory when/if she overcomes it.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: She's a bit crazy, but she's also out to save all the innocent lives she can.
Biagio Busoni
Voiced by: Norio Wakamoto |
A ruthless Bishop who sees the glory of the Roman Catholic Church as everything, willing to sacrifice the lives of anyone in order to preserve its name.

- Creepy Cool Crosses: He can make them enlarge to the size of cars and fall on his enemies.
- Gravity Master: Limited to making his opponents heavier so they cannot move.
- Hey, It's That Voice!: Father Anderson is now a Bishop!
- Holier Than Thou
- Knight Templar
- Large Ham: Wakamoto at his finest!
