Alcoholic Parent: Allie's parents gradually fell into the devouring hole of drugs and alcoholism, and she's eventually taken away. Allie then lives with her aunt, and the parents write letters to tell that they still love her.
Driven to Suicide: As Allie learns from a Google search of her former clown friend's name, a mother blames Laughing Jack for murdering her son, while the articles read of her mutilating her child after a strange series of events and being sent to a mental institution. Much to Allie's dismay, however, the mother has committed suicide.
Fighting From the Inside: Laughing Jack is aware of how terrible he has become, and is frequently at odds with his lingering compassion for Allie and his bloodlust.
Flexibility Equals Sex Ability: Laughing Jack attempts a casual conversation with Allie, which she's reluctant to do after the sexual torture he's put her through over the past weeks. When he asks about her acting roles, Allie tells of her experience in theatre art school, to which he replies, "Well, I suppose that explains why you're so flexible," making Allie go red and regret opening up to him.
Joisey: Allie takes a cab to New Jersey, following the address in a received email to a store for natural remedies and psychic readings. There she meets Edna, who tells her more about Laughing Jack, but Allie regrets learning the heinous things Jack has done. As she waits for a bus on her way home, a vehicle with men carrying illegal substances almost crashes into her. They don't intend her harm, but Laughing Jack appears and murders all of the men brutally.
Laser-Guided Amnesia: Laughing Jack's occupation as a friend sent to whichever child in the world needs him most at the moment has the drawback of him not being able to recall his past friends, which he assumes to be part of the rules. However, Allie's friendship bracelet reminds him of the times they spent together, inspiring him to find Allie again.
Monster Clown: After his corruption, Laughing Jack becomes a more demonic clown-like entity, having developed sharp claws, teeth and a ruthless yet playful personality.
Occult Detective: Edna is part of an "unofficial underground research team" that investigates the paranormal, using a Wiccan store of remedies as a front. Her backroom contains walls of newspaper clippings, including one about Laughing Jack.
Parental Abandonment: Allie is separated from her parents because they can no longer raise her due to their financially crippling addictions, so she's sent to live with her aunt. However, the aunt is also less than capable and highly engrossed with her work, explaining her frequent absence from the house.
Shout Out: Edna explains that there are other monsters like Laughing Jack which hail from a nightmarish underside of the world, including a "faceless man lurking in the forest, a spirit that uses technology to drive its victims to insanity (and) a boy who survived grave injuries and went on to be a mass killer." These describe the creepypasta characters Slender Man, Ben Drowned and Jeff the Killer respectively.
Super Smoke: Laughing Jack can disappear and reappear into smoke at will. When he was good, his smoke was colorful, but after his corruption, he turns into black smoke.
Time Travel: Laughing Jack has been to many places and times, as his job is to help the child that needs him most at the time. When Allie finally sees him again after 6 years away from home, her old friend has become a monster after befriending the murderous Isaac Grossman, and his ability to time travel was revoked since then. According to Edna, the paranormal investigator, Laughing Jack has been murdering children since the 1900s.
Vengeful Abandoned Toy: Laughing Jack's grown tired of being treated like a toy, only played with when convenient, and so resorts to toying with his victims, violating them while still remaining playful.
